Rhodes ran a nearly flawless race at Bowman Gray. He led 151 of 152 laps in the NASCAR Hall of Fame 150. The race ended with a green-white-checkered flag finish. Ben Rhodes increased his lead in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East standings to 49 points over Gray Gaulding.

“That was a little tricky there,” Rhodes said. “I was afraid something might happen. I was afraid I might get moved up. If it wasn’t (Gaulding) it was going to be somebody else. That’s what this track creates. Just lucky we got to hold him off there at the end for the win and Daniel Suarez as well.”

The only time Rhodes lost his lead was in the final restart. Daniel Suarez passed him on lap 150, but Rhodes regained the lead for the final two laps of the race.

Rhodes won the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race at Greenville Pickens Speedway in North Carolina on March 22 and was the overall winner in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series race at Iowa Speedway on May 17.

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet,” Rhodes said. “I’m sure once we go back to the shop and talk to these guys and just sit down, it will start sinking in. I’m kind of elated right now. Just really happy about our accomplishment right now.”

Suarez held on for second place. While Rhodes ran up front the entire night, Suarez had to rally through the field. “It was fast and with some luck, we drove all the way back to the front with a happy face and a second-place finish,” Suarez said.

Suarez started in the 20th position in the 20-car field after hitting the wall in qualifying.

“It was pretty difficult,” Suarez said. “In the beginning, we started in the back. Early in the morning we had one of the best race cars out there. In the qualifying we had some trouble with the rear brakes and we hit the fence. After that we decided to work on the car and start at the back to be more prepared for the race.”

Rhodes and Gaulding battled for the lead early in the race. Rhodes started on the pole. Gaulding started in the inside of Row 2. But Gaulding faded in the closing laps of the race and finished in sixth place. It was Gaulding’s fourth top-10 finish in seven NASCAR K&N Pro Series East races.

Austin Hill finished in third place in his first K&N Pro Series race at Bowman Gray Stadium. It was his fifth top-five finish of the season.

“It was really wild, that’s for sure,” Hill said. “We had a really good car at the very beginning of the race. It was really good. It started falling off, getting a little tight running through the center. Coming home with a third place is definitely exciting. I just want to win.”

Brandon Jones came in fourth place, followed by Ronnie Bassett Jr. in fifth at Bowman Gray.

The next race in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East is the Pensacola 150 at Five Flags Speedway in Florida on June 13.

Chris Ferguson Makes a Showing in the National Dirt Racing League NDRL

Chris Ferguson is no stranger to lining up against other super late model drivers. In fact, he has five years of racing in this particular class under his belt. However, this season is a little different. He’ll see new faces and travel to unfamiliar venues. Ferguson will be experiencing his first season in the National Dirt Racing League.

One would suspect that the anticipation was practically overwhelming to the driver when he rolled into Phenix City, Alabama, to race in the Bama Bash, his first race of the season. But his actions lent to a totally different perspective. A little apprehensive at first, it didn’t take long for the driver to find his groove. With 20 laps to go , he muscled his way into the top five.

Things were looking promising when the driver moved into the top three. But bad luck eventually reared its ugly head. He lost his stronghold on those behind him, upon having a flat. However, it quickly became evident that quit was not in Ferguson’s vocabulary. Getting the Warrior 1G back in working order, he pressed onward, finishing 11th in a field of 25.

When asked about his confidence level prior to the race, Ferguson said, “I knew we had a great car, but I hadn’t raced since last November. So I was a little timid at first. However, once I got back in the seat, I knew we had a great shot at running good; so my confidence was high.

“There was some pressure, with it being such a big race,” he continued. “All of the country’s best drivers were there with over 40 cars trying to make the 24 car starting field. It was tough to even make the main event. The most pressure was the fact that the best of the best were there, racing door-to-door with me. So I knew I had to drive the best I could.

With the first race of the 2014 season behind them, Ferguson and his crew headed to the Smokey Mountain Speedway, at Maryville, Tennessee; where they would race in the Tennessee Tipoff. With what he considered a reputable run at the Bama Bash in his rearview mirror, the driver had no intentions of doing anything other than making a showing in race number two of the season as well.

A good performance during his initial race of the season was more than enough to boost his confidence. However, Ferguson was even more stoked to know that dirt super late model hall of fame member; Freddy Smith would be in their corner. “He no longer races,” explained, Ferguson. “But he comes to races with us, to consult and help us out on the road. Freddy is from the same part of North Carolina, and my family has always known him.”

Earning the tenth place spot in the $7,500.00 to win preliminary event, the driver returned the following day with aspirations of success. At the waving of the green flag, engines revved, the air permeated with the aroma of exhaust and the battle was underway. The driver wasted no time getting into the mix, and at the race’s end, crossed the finish line in eighth place.

With many races ahead of him, Chris Ferguson is looking forward to the future. Ranked 10th in the points standing early on, the driver is acutely aware that the potential for a stellar season is certainly within his reach.

Although his skills will play an important role in the overall outcome of the season, the driver is also mindful that maintenance will also prove an essential element of success. That in mind, he and his crew will depend upon K&N products to keep his engine running contaminant free.

“I use the K&N 6 inch washable and reusable air filters,” he explained, “along with their fuel and oil filters. I also use K&N cleaning supplies to clean our filters. K&N makes the best filters on the market."

“The fact that we can use about five air filters to run around 60 races a year is unbelievable,” he continued. “We put over 2,000 laps on our engines, and our K&N filters stand just as long. I’ve never had issues with any of our K&N products, and we’re proud to say that our team will always be a K&N customer.”

With a high confidence level and the backing of excellent products, Chris Ferguson is apt to experience a memorable 2014 season. When asked what his fans can expect throughout the remainder of the year, Ferguson concluded, “A lot of traveling and hopefully, more wins. We just knocked out a $10,000.00 win in Virginia and followed it up with a $5,000.00 win in Tennessee this past weekend. We plan to continue following the the National Dirt Racing League.”

Menzies Motosports Conquer Baja in the Red Bull Trophy Truck Beating Robby Gordon

The SCORE-International Baja 500 race is tough on man and machine. The Red Bull Trophy Truck of Menzies Motorsports suffered a flat tire after only 100 miles

The SCORE-International Baja 500 race is tough on man and machine. The Red Bull Trophy Truck of Menzies Motorsports suffered a flat tire after only 100 miles

The 46th running of the annual SCORE-International Baja 500 began and ended in Ensenada, Mexico. Every year racers and fans flock to the Baja peninsula for this legendary single loop race that goes approximately 500 miles through amazing coastal and desert terrain. To say that racing in Baja takes courage would be a serious understatement.

A chase vehicle helped the Red Bull Trophy Truck of Menzies Motorsports get back into the Baja 500 race and regain a lost position

There are well over 24 classes of vehicles which race the infamous Baja 500 each year. There are classes for two wheels, or four, cars, trucks and almost anything in between. Topping the list of the most spectated classes is the prestigious SCORE Trophy Trucks. Trophy Trucks are open production unlimited race vehicles with the appearance of a modern day pickup. But the similarities between a trophy truck and a production pickup pretty much end at the front grill. Make no mistake; a trophy truck is a highly sophisticated full blown race vehicle.

K&N sponsored Menzies Motorsports made the annual trek to Baja this year with high expectations. One look at the Red Bull sponsored trophy truck of Bryce Menzie and co-pilot Pete, reveals that this team means business. An excellent qualifying run slotted the Menzies Motorsports Red Bull trophy truck in the second overall starting position. Only one racer, last year’s champion Robby Gordon, stood between Menzies Motorsports and an overall victory.

With the waving of a green flag, the SCORE-International Baja 500 race began with Robby Gordon taking off first and Menzies Motorsports leaving exactly one minute after him. The first 100 miles of the race were uneventful with the top 5 trophy trucks retaining their starting positions. At about the 100 mile mark, Menzies Motosports got a flat tire and was passed by the #35 truck piloted by Jason Voss. The repair took less than a minute thanks to a Menzies chase vehicle helping Bryce and Pete get back in the race. As luck would have it, the #35 truck of Jason Voss had their own flat tire forty miles later. Bryce and Pete were now back in second place leaving only Robby Gordon in front of them.

Racing in Baja is extremely taxing on both driver and machine. Robby Gordon was struck with a mechanical issue at the 200 mile mark leaving Menzies with a clear view as they took over the lead. Bryce and his co-pilot Pete led the remainder of the race and were welcomed back into Ensenada, Mexico, by cheering fans. This win marks Menzies Motorsports’ third overall Baja 500 victory in the last four years.

“I just want to thank all of my sponsors who make this possible and to all of our crew and volunteers who sacrificed a lot to win this thing. I’m pumped!” said Menzies and he proceeded to spray the cheering crowd with champagne. He continued, “Our team would like to thank our sponsors, like K&N Filters for making this victory possible!”

Lifted and lowered Duramax diesel powered Silverados and Sierras can be seen storming the streets with a commanding presence.
