No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose, Louisiana is nearly halfway between Baton
Rouge and New Orleans. During the first weekend of March, racer Doug Miller made
his mark by winning NHRA Lucas Oil Super Comp: Division 4.
“I use a K&N oil filter and a K&N air filter in my scoop,” said Miller. “I never
have to worry about the oil filter collapsing or bursting, and the oil is always
good and clean.”
Miller also uses a K&N oil filter (HP-3002)
and the AirCharger Intake System (63-1007-1)
on his 1993 Chevy crew cab dually truck. “I could immediately tell the
difference with the K&N products,” said Miller. “I noticed a lot more power when
I was towing.”
The Houston, Texas resident is a deputy sheriff when he is not racing. “I drive
a 2005 Kia Spectra to work,” Miller said. “I use K&N filters in my Kia (HP-1004)
and all my vehicles, the product works.”
Miller is going to Memphis for a divisional race in a few weeks. “I hope to do
well,” he said.
Racers in NHRA Super Street try to run as close to 10.9 seconds in a quarter of a
mile without going under 10.9 seconds. Reaction time at the start is key, said
Super Street racer Gary Thompson who has run a near perfect 10.9 seconds 6
times in his index and class.
Gary drives a 1986 Corvette with a 400 Chevrolet
small block 400 cubic inch engine. “K&N filters (HP-3002)
are the only filters I’ve ever had on my Corvette,” said Gary. “The sticky tires on
drag cars pick up a lot of pebbles and dirt, and K&N performance filters really
work and keep my motor clean.”
In Arizona, Gary won Division 7 in Super Street in the Lucas Oil Drag Series.
“The K&N filter has a nut on the bottom and all I need is my crescent wrench,”
said Thompson. “When I fire up the car I don’t have to worry about a bursting
container with this K&N filter.”
Gary’s wife Nancy Thompson races a 2004 Corvette with a K&N Air Intake System.
“Nancy has picked up 3 tenths of a second in ET Bracket Racing with the K&N
system,” said Thomson. “She races at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma in the Wednesday
Night Drags.”
Gary began racing in 1966 and currently ranks number 1 in Jegs Allstar points.
The 56-year-old Santa Rosa resident was Division 7 Super Street champion in 2003
and 2005.
Gary is headed to Tucson, Arizona next for the Lucas Oil Division 7 race. “I
would like to do well,” said Gary. “I hope to qualify for Chicago.”
At 5-years-old race car driver Terry Borcheller knew he had to have two things,
a cool K&N sticker on his first motorcycle and a K&N filter. At 12, one of K&N’s
youngest customers was using our filters on his go karts.
Race Car Driver Terry Borcheller
At 39-years-old the Gainesville, Georgia resident has 6 professional
Series Drivers Championships, winning 2 races on a single weekend 8 times. Terry
also has 57 Professional Race wins in 7 series at 20 tracks. “K&N products have
always been part of my racing life.”
Terry started his 2006 season with Brian Nott’s new Blackforest Racing Ford
Mustang in the Grand-Am Cup series at Daytona. At the start of the race Forest
Barber and Terry were 34th on the 49-car class grid, when the race ended they
came in sixth, only 17 seconds away from the win.
“I run the stock K&N air filter with the Ford Mustang,” said Terry. “Anytime I
use a K&N filter I gain performance and fuel economy.
Terry and co-driver Harrison Brix finished fifth in the Rolex Sports Car Series
race in Mexico at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Terry was only 90 1/2
seconds out of fourth place.

There are a lot of elements to winning, Terry said. “You have to have the
right team and the right motor.”
Terry raced Le Mans in 2002. “Picture your worst day at work then intensify it,
picture having to focus all the time for 24 hours, picture working from daylight
to darkness and feeling every type of emotion and that’s Le Mans,” said Terry.
“A split second mistake or some oil on a track could mean the loss of a car
worth ¾ of a million dollars. It’s easy to go from employed to unemployed or
from a hero to zero in thousandths of a second, but the intensity is awesome.”
During a 24 hour endurance race we need to make sure we have the cleanest path
to the motor, said Terry. “The team owners and the engine builders tell me K&N
filters do the job.”
Terry compared racing to a chess match and said he likes the strategy of trying
to come out first at the end.
“I’m happy to have K&N’s support, I’ve used the filters since I was a kid,” said
Terry. “The company is very easy to represent, K&N makes great products.”
Bob Wirth R&D Services is an engine development shop in Hayward, California. The
company builds engines for midgets, motorcycles, road racing and circle track
racing. Bob has even put together engines for lumberjack chain saw
competitions.

Bob builds up engine performance. When Bob puts an engine on the company
dynamometer we try to duplicate field circumstances, said Bob’s wife Lois
Crayder. “We help our customers with the performance they want to see on the
race track,” said Lois. “We also use K&N Engineering’s air filters for testing.
K&N filters increase the ability of an engine to breathe which can increase
power.”
Bob’s shop has been in business for 30 years and values its scientific approach
but down to earth values. “Our customers find us through the racetracks or word
of mouth,” said Lois. “Our job is to make more efficient, more powerful and
reliable engines. We use 4 to 5 of K&N filters depending on the environment and
the engine. We want to be at the front of the race.”

“I race to have fun, but I really race to win,” said K&N Project Engineer and
Top Comp Class driver Jonathan Fiello. The 25-year-old Yucaipa, California
resident has been in the game for 9 years. Jonathan’s most recent race was the
NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series: Division 7 at the Firebird Raceway in
Phoenix, Arizona.

“I was 8 out of forty-eight in the Top Comp Class,” said Jonathan. “I lost
second round because I broke a starter in the stadium lanes. I was really upset
because the car was running so good.” Jonathan drives a 2003 undercover dragster
with a 635 cubic inch big bock Chevrolet. It is fuel injected on alcohol and
runs about 1200 horsepower. His dragster’s wheel base is 230 inches long.
Jonathan runs K&N’s valve covered breather filters, K&N nozzle filters (E-3003)
and K&N’s big block Chevy oil filters. “Since I run the motor on methanol we
have to change the oil filter frequently,” he said. “When we redo the engine and
pull the oil pan out we noticed it stays clean, it’s unreal.” Jonathan said K&N
oil filters are a key component for his motor.
K&N Fuel Injection Line Air Filters (E-3003) are a unique way to protect a high
performance engine from contaminants through aeration holes in the fuel
injection nozzles. These filters slip onto the injector nozzle and protect the
aeration hole from dust and debris. Sold individually, these filters have a 1 ¼
outside diameter and a 1 1/16 height and fit securely over ¼ to ½ fuel injection
nozzles.
“My job at K&N helps me with racing. I have a degree in engineering, but I come
to work and love to study air flow,” said Jonathan. “I also listen to the people
I work with at K&N and go home and see what new knowledge I can apply to my
engine.”
K&N Engineering’s premium Performance Gold Oil Filter has many features to
satisfy the demands of racers such as drilled safety wire holes for racing,
heavy duty construction and a sturdy one-inch wrench nut to make oil filter
removal quick and easy. “We just jack the car up and plop it off,” said
Jonathan. “It’s so easy to remove, that it has taken me as little as 3 minutes,
very awesome.”
Jonathan’s said his last two years of racing have been his best. “In 2004 I won
the championship for the southern California Super Eliminator Series,” he said.
“In 2005 I finished second in the Mike’s Transmission Top Comp races in Las
Vegas, Nevada. I missed the championship by ten points, and that was a
heartbreaker.”
Jonathan’s racing team is a family affair. His brother Daniel and father Nick
are part of Fiello Racing. “I love to work on the car, it is relaxing and so
much fun,” Jonathan said. “For me, it’s the love of racing.”
