The official season starts on June 20th in St. John, Washington at the Webb’s Slough Track, but Dan Morrison and Doug Hendrickson could not wait to hit the water. The duo went to a non-sanctioned USSBA event at Firebird Raceway in Chandler, Arizona.

“We were the fastest on the track,” said Dan Morrison. “Our boats are running flawless again this year.” Jet Sprint Boat racing is unique. Drivers and their navigators compete in water channels that are only three feet deep and 15 feet wide. They also have to right corner at least 32 times in less than a minute and pull 7 G-Forces.

The event is also about memorizing a course. Organizers give the racers a look at the track on paper a day before the event. They get to walk around the course, but the first time the boats go out, it’s a race. There are no test runs, arrows or flags, just a maze of islands that have to be raced from memory.

“The Arizona race was great fun,” said Morrison. “We raced once on Friday, three times on Saturday and twice on Sunday. It was also great to be in front of a big crowd.”

Morrison has a NASCAR motor in a super light weight crank. His motor is strong enough to run at 8500 rpm’s all day, but they keep it down to 7000 rpm’s to maximize the efficiency of their jet pumps. “We use K&N air and oil filters,” he said. “K&N is the reason we’re in the Winner’s Circle. K&N protects our engines and gives us additional horsepower when we race.”

The Wicked Team won at Chandler, Arizona and the team plans to be top contenders in each class in 2009.

Oregon Trail Rally Race an Agressive Run for NOS Mitsubishi

The Rally American National Championship Series continued at the Oregon Trail Rally. Driver Andrew Comrie-Picard (ACP) and the NOS Energy Mitsubishi with K&N products were aggressive and finished fourth. ACP maintains a top three position overall in the Rally America Championship points chase.

APC and co-driver Robbie Durant were one second off the overall lead but a flat tire cost them. They were at the mid-point in the three-day event and the duo fought hard to regain position. The final results put ACP six seconds between second and fourth place at the conclusion of the event.

“We were definitely on the pace for the win and could have taken it without that puncture,” said Comrie-Picard. “But the championship standings are very close and we expect to be back in the lead after the next round.” Comrie-Picard and Durant went into the event leading the Rally America Series.

Subaru Rally Team USA driver Travis Pastrana took the win, Rockstar Energy’s Tanner Foust was second and Polish driver Andi Mancin finished third to score his first U.S. podium.

“This was the first event this season that we didn’t make the podium and that is a disappointment,” said Comrie-Picard. “The competition is amazing and I have to hand it to Andi Mancin, he drove a great race.”

The Oregon Trail Rally took place over 100 miles of competition on a course that includes a mix of twisty, hard packed forest conditions and wide open farming roads. The Mount Hood area’s hilly terrain meant a lot of elevation changes throughout the contest. The conditions were sunny and bright, making for dry and dusty roads and a visibility challenge for teams.

Team ACP Rally uses K&N Engineering products, such as the racing air fillters, on their vehicles. “I’ve used K&N since I began Rally racing more than a decade ago,” said Comrie-Picard. “We compete under tough conditions, with dust, mud and water splashes. We do the most extreme things we can do in a car and K&N is the perfect formula for our turbo charged motors. There is no compromise with K&N.”

Next, the team heads north for Round 2 of the Canadian Rally Championship, the Rocky Mountain Rally on May 29-30. Team ACP then heads back to the United States in June for the Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally in Pennsylvania.

The team will next make an appearance at the Great American Bracket Race, a $50,000 to win event at No Problem Raceway Park in Belle Rose, Louisiana. So far the Moser Engineering backed Cummings Motorsports team has had a strong start to its 2009 campaign. Slate Cummings took a double victory at the IHRA Mardi Gras Nationals in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he captured Stock and Super Stock titles.

Britt Cummings advanced to the 3rd round in Top Dragster competition and a IHRA Pro-Am event in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and family patriarch Larry Cummings was also in competition when a deluge of rain came and forced the conclusion of his event to be postponed.

Cummings Motorsports is a family automotive business from Hammond, Louisiana. “Bayou Boyz Racing has ten cars,” said Slate Cummings. “We use K&N racing air filters and oil filters on all our vehicles. With K&N our racing family is faster and very consistent and the filters never give us a problem on or off the track.”

Slate Cummings has also qualified to represent Division 4 in the prestigious JEGS All-Stars competition. The All-Stars event will be the first for Cummings. The team is ready for its summer of racing.

Team Rider Chaz Davies and Ben Thompson rode the Aprilia RSV1000Rs in what could be considered most difficult weekend of their AMA season. As Davies took fourth, Thompson crashed in both races at Infineon.

“Despite all the challenges, we’re hoping to build on this performance,” said Spalding. “We use K&N products on everything we build. K&N motorcycle air filters and oil filters do the job of protecting our engines from dirt and track debris.”

Davis was fast from the beginning of the weekend. He qualified in Superpole in the third position with a time of 1:40.010. Thompson made steady progress during the first qualifying run, but crashed out early and had to start from the eighteenth position.

At the start of race one Thompson crashed and destroyed his Aprilia RSV100R. Fortunately, Thompson was un-injured. Davies missed the first lap incident and was running in the front with the lead group. Davies spent most of the race in third place, but was passed with a handful of laps to go. This is Factory Aprilia’s second top five in a row.

The Millennium Technologies sponsored Aprilia team worked to repair Thompson’s damaged RSV100R and at the same time come up with a solution to get Davies to the podium. On Sunday Davies turned the fastest lap of the race. Unfortunately on lap six Davies’ Aprilia RSV1000R overheated and he had to pull out of the race. Thompson was taken out by another rider.

“It was a bad weekend,” said Thompson. “This was only my second time at Infineon and we made some mistakes early, but we really started making some progress by Saturday. Just when we started to get some momentum, we ended up in the dirt.”

“Although the weekend didn’t end the way we wanted, it was very encouraging that the bike worked as well as it did at this track,” said Davies. “Infineon is a very tight track that rewards a nimble lightweight bike. Our team did a great job of making our Aprilia RSV100R’s competitive there.”

The AMA SportBike Series continues at Road America.
