A Rainy Weekend at the NHRA Spring Nationals Soaks K&N Filters Car

Jeff Arend went to the O’Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals in the special edition K&N Filters Car looking for a win at Houston, Texas.

The rain was so bad on Saturday, teams and fans spent almost 20 consecutive hours at Houston Raceway Park without a single car making its way onto the track,” said CSK Team Manager Bob Wilber. “The thick clouds, heavy rains, massive thunder and lightning show kept us from seeing the sunrise, and the wet stuff kept the cars off the track. The dew point was so high it was impossible to keep anything dry.”

It was so wet the NHRA called it a day and the planned pair of afternoon qualifying runs was cancelled. The fields were set based on Friday’s qualifying as it stood and locked Arend into the 8th spot.

On Sunday the rain went away around 2 p.m. and the steam began to rise from the Houston pavement as the first pair of Top Fuel dragsters took the track. Arend sat at the end of the Funny Car line, where he would face No.9 qualifier Bob Gilbertson as the last pair in round one.

In the world of razor-thin losses, Arend left the line starting well, with a solid .084 reaction time. Bob Gilbertson had a great .060 on the board and the race was on. Both cars tore down the track in a rare show of side-by-side racing and it was too close to call, until the win light went on in Gilbertson’s lane. Arend clocked in with a 4.908 while Gilberston recorded a 4.907.

“I didn’t cut a bad light, by any means,” said Arend. “But he is very quick at the line, and he got on me by just a little. The K&N car ran well, we didn’t bobble or smoke the tires and a lot of people were having problems out there. To beat him, I would have needed something like an .058 light, which is something I can do but that’s a little quicker than what I’d call normal. I don’t go up there trying to slay the tree, because that takes you out of your routine and you can end up beating yourself up doing that.”

It was “that close” but it went the other way, said Wilber.

World of Outlaws Donny Schatz is Consistent in Early Season Racing

Donny Schatz and the ParkerStore Team took sixth place on Saturday night at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, Georgia. The defending World of Outlaws champion is setting a strong early season pace for the 2007 campaign.

“Sixth place was not the result we wanted,” said Schatz. “We are working on getting things as best as we can. The tough part is that we’re only racing once a week right now. You put everything out and you can spend the next six days thinking about it. We’re not where we need to be at the moment, but we’ve been racing up front trying to get better.”

Hardee’s Southbound Showdown began well enough for Schatz. He turned the quickest lap in time trials to earn his first FastTime Award of the season. The Fargo, North Dakota racer then earned a spot in the dash event and began the 30-lap feature in ninth place.

He moved up to sixth place, but spent the remaining laps of the feature trying to pass Steve Kinser. The racing groove made passing difficult and Schatz waited for Kinser to make a mistake. The opportunity never presented itself and Schatz finished sixth.

The finish along with Joey Saldana’s victory gave Saldana a two-point lead in the World of Outlaws Series over Schatz.

“We’re excited to have a couple of races next weekend,” said Schatz. “We’re going to some tracks where we’ve had success in the past and hope to be right there each night. We’ve won three races so far, and if we could repeat what we did last year we’d all be happy.”

Schatz and the ParkerStore Team use K&N Engineering products. “The K&N Airbox worked flawlessly,” he said. “I have to thank all the folks at K&N for their dedication to building a superior product.”

Schatz returns to action next weekend at Paducah, Kentucky on Friday and the I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Missouri on Saturday.

Allard had great position on the front row of the 25-lap winged sprint main event and took the early lead over Brandon Wimmer. Wimmer tried to close in on Allard in thick traffic a few times but Chico’s home town racer held on to the lead position.

On the final restart Allard led Grass Valley’s Brad Sweet and defending track champion Andy Forsberg to the stripe. By lap 10, Allard got pinched down to the inside of the speedway going into turn one. Allard managed to pull away in the final two laps for the Feather Falls Casino, Hoosier Tire, Coors Racing Series Friday night championship win.

Allard uses K&N Engineering Oil and Air Filters along with K&N’s Carbon Fiber Air Box. “K&N makes the best products,” he said. “The K&N Oil and Air Filters are easy to use and easy to maintain.”

This was the second win of the year in Allard’s home town. He won the Mini Gold Cup opening night in March.

First and Second Place at Same Event for K&N Sponsored Sportsman Class Racers

Cummings started the weekend by qualifying on the pole despite bad weather. He took his car to the final round berth before falling to champion Dan Fletcher in Super Stock. Both men shared the podium at the end.

Both Sportsman class racers are sponsored by K&N Engineering and use K&N Products. “Our K&N Oil and Air Filters are very dependable,” said Cummings. “K&N keeps the debris out of our engines.”

Super Stock winner Fletcher also uses K&N Oil Filters. “The nut on the bottom of K&N Oil Filters is an ingenious invention,” he said. “They are very easy to change. Thanks to K&N Oil Filters my engines have outlasted and outperformed and stayed clean.”

Despite coming in second Cummings said he could not be happier with his new car. “I feel like we’ve always had nice stuff,” said Cummings. “But this is by far the nicest race car I’ve ever driven.”

In addition to his success in Super Stock, the entire Moser Engineering team was in competition at Texas. Slate Cumming’s brother Britt drove to a third round finish in both Stock and Quick Rod while family patriarch Larry also competed in both Stock and Super Stock
