Brooke Kawell Racing Readies for 2013 LOORRS Modified Kart Championship Bid

Modified Kart racer Brooke Kawell’s new tires are a step in the right winning direction.

There are a couple of common threads that run through the fabric of talented, up-and-coming, motorsports stars. First, they are nearly always bitten by the race bug early on in life, for Brooke Kawell it was go-karts at age five, then Trophy Kart Jr 1 events, and now 2013 marks her third year racing Modified Karts.

Brooke Kawell plans to use the experience gained over the past two years to make her third Modified Kart season the best yet.

Another common denominator is racing pedigree, and Kawell’s bloodline runs rich with spirited DNA, her grandfather raced Sprint Cars and off-road vehicles, and her father was a motocross racer and a three-time Baja 1000 winner. With her physical racing foundation solidly intact, 14-year-old Kawell is now determined to shrink the competitive mental curve. And the straight-A, homeschooled, driver possesses all the tools to get that done as well.

“Last season I learned that getting a good qualifying position and a good start and staying consistent is the key,” Kawell said, “So I am going to apply that more this 2013 season. My race goals are to start getting podium finishes and get a championship in my Modified Kart.”

Kawell kicked off her 2013 season in precisely the right direction toward achieving those goals, as he reached the podium in the first round of the Southern California Lucas Oil Regional Off Road Series at Glen Helen (LORORS), a subdivision of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series (LOORRS).

“I am heading out next weekend to Firebird International Raceway in Chandler, Arizona for the Lucas Oil Off Road series which is our national level,” said Kawell. She will take on 2013 Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series in her K&N sponsored No. 508 Modified Trophy Kart.

“Looking back on my favorite highlight of the 2012 season would have to be when I finished in 4th at Las Vegas Motor speedway in the LOORRS’ national series.” She in fact cites that near podium finish as her proudest race moment so far.

When she’s not racing she’s just a regular teenager that goes for runs, walks her dog and hangs out with her family. “I also love to go for long rides on my road bike,” she adds, “It’s fun and a good way to train.” So how does she feel about being such a young female driver in a sport dominated by men? “It's no biggie! I put my shoes on the same way they do, one shoe at a time. I'm just another racer on the track.”

In pursuit of Brooke Kawell Racing’s chase for the 2013 championship only a few slight changes needed to be made to her kart. “There are a few new things that we have done to my Modified Kart,” says Kawell. “We are trying new tires and they seem to be a step in the right direction. I am still running my Honda's TRX450 motor. But, along with my continuing support from K&N, I have a lot of great new and current sponsor support and I am coming out with confidence and hoping to use my experience from my past season's to make a better season.”

Brian Brown on Podium in World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series Opener at Tucson

Brian Brown’s goal is to stay focused on the moment and to take one race at a time

“Anytime you’re on the podium with the outlaws, especially at a track you're not used to, is great,” stated Brian Brown speaking about his third place finish in the 2013 debut with the World of Outlaws at Tucson. “They are the best in the world and to be on the podium is great for this team. I'm really proud of the way everyone on this team is working together.”

Arizona motorsport enthusiasts are some of the most loyal and knowledgeable fans anywhere in the country, and they have been really patient. The last time the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars competed at Tucson International Raceway was 2007. But the wait turned out to be well worth it with the return of the Wildcat Shootout on Saturday, March 9. During a spectacular night of racing, on a new lightning fast clay surface, 19 of the STP Sprint Cars eclipsed the track record set back in ’07.

“We have been very happy with our car and team to start the 2013 season. Getting off on the right foot is always key to a new season,” Brown said. “We really didn't know what to expect getting back on Hoosiers. They changed the construction of the tires a little bit. We qualified really well on Wednesday (in Vegas where he went on to finish 6th).”

“I think the real key for us right now is Charlie Garrett engines. Being on his team is like getting drafted by the Yankees, and it has shown at these Outlaw shows. Charlie really has our engines running great and when you qualify, a lot of emphasis is on the engine. We are lucky to have him on our team.”

Brian Brown, Inc. had a win earlier in the year at Tucson with ASCS, which clearly helped him get things started on the right note, as he was third quick in Tucson on Saturday. “It was probably the best car we've had in a long, long time,” Brown added. “We went out for hot laps and we were under the track record.”

Last season Brown and his team has had ten wins, 37 top-3 finishes, 48 top-five finishes and 59 top-10 finishes. As one of the hardest working men in Sprint Car racing, Brown understands the overriding significance of reaching the podium with the Outlaws after his first race, and jump starting his season with a reasonable amount of confidence.

“Our goals are to win races and to compete for wins every night that we race. If we can do that, the wins will rack up.” Summing up what Brown’s long and short term goals are for the 2013 season.

Vance & Hines Harley Davidson XR1200 Racing Series' Kyle Wyman Takes Second in Daytona

To call Kyle Wyman an underdog or a Cinderella might be a stretch; after all Wyman did win both the 2011 and 2012 Vance & Hines Harley Davidson XR1200 Racing Series season openers, as well as the 2012 series championship. But underdog and Cinderella might really be appropriate considering what Wyman had to overcome just to get to the season-opening race in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Wyman was set to defend his championship all winter, but just two weeks before the first race of the season, a change of plans left him wondering if he would even make it to round one.

"I had a really good program lined up al winter that unfortunately folded just two weeks before the start of the season," Wyman said.

With the help of Revolution Performance, Millennium Technologies and Ballistic Performance Components, Wyman just made it do Daytona, and he nearly made it to victory lane. Wyman made a thunderous march through the field, coming from seventh to second on the final lap.

"I'd say in some ways I'm disappointed but in other ways, I'm relieved," Wyman said. "It's disappointing because I've got that kind of history leading into the race, so I want to grab another win.

"But at the same time, when you look at that particular race, there's just so many ways it could've played out. I'm truly relieved that I was able to come out of there with a podium because of how much luck was involved."

Kyle Wyman made a thunderous march through the field, coming from seventh to second on the final lap.

Wyman said after the race that seventh was exactly where he wanted to be on the final lap, noting the huge draft that allowed the XR1200's to really pull and made for some exciting, side-by-side racing. Wyman still is not backing down from those comments.

"Drafting was a huge deal during that race," Wyman said. "Daytona always promises crazy race action, and I think this one was the craziest yet; it was a true dog-fight between eleven or so of us in the lead pack. I tried everything, leading, third, fifth, even as far back as tenth. It seemed like between fifth and seventh was the best place to be in the pack, so that's what I aimed for on the final lap."

The plan almost worked. Wyman actually took the lead out of turn 4, but Tyler O'Hara used a slingshot pass in the tri-oval to take the win. Still, considering what Wyman had overcome just to get to Daytona, it was hard for him to complain.

"My expectations were to win," Wyman said. "After winning the last two, there's really no other position I could finish that would be a truly satisfying result, but still at the same time, I had a ton of fun, which is always a top priority, and I got some great exposure for K&N and the rest of my sponsors who helped me get to Daytona."

Wyman is still unsure of his future plans. The series takes more than a two-month break before heading to Elkhart Lake, Wisconson, and the world-famous Road America circuit. While it will take more support, Wyman is banking on history repeating itself to get him to the next event.

"Currently the plan is to just keep knocking on doors and trying to find more support. It's a difficult time to be a motorcycle racer right now, and I think the grid sizes and amount of support out there reflects that," Wyman said. "Somehow though, I always seem to find a way to race so I'm banking on history repeating itself and having another great opportunity to show everyone what I've got, not just as a racer, but as a team owner as well.

"Kyle Wyman Racing won the XR1200 championship in 2012, the results speak for themselves."
