The Ken’s Factory Klassy 9 is a Custom Supercharged Harley® that Demands Attention

Klassy 9 by Ken's Factory full view

Klassy 9 won the Modified Harley Class of the Long Beach IMS

The name Klassy 9 may conjure visions of tuxedos and caviar. However, that imagery would be ever so slightly deceiving. You see, Klassy 9 is a fire-breathing supercharged Harley® Softail built by the folks at Ken’s Factory. The bike is a stunning custom that won the Modified Harley Class of the J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show at the Progressive International Motorcycle Show in Long Beach, California. K&N is a proud sponsor of several classes of the 2016-2017 Ultimate Builder competition, including the Modified Harley category.

Klassy 9 by Ken's Factory supercharger and K&N filter

A K&N filter lets the Thompson Supercharger breathe deeply while still protecting the engine

Ken’s Factory USA is the new, dedicated North American sales extension of the world-renowned international motorcycle designer Ken Nagai. Award-winning builds are nothing new to the custom motorcycle company. Nelson Kanno, the general manager of Ken’s Factory USA doesn’t mince words when reflecting on the company’s goal. “We strive to build world class custom bikes,” Kanno says. “That’s the bottom line - our clientele demand it and Ken’s Factory strives to create it.” The body of work Ken’s Factory has amassed in the custom motorcycle industry speaks to the company’s vision and passion.

Klassy 9 by Ken's Factory seat and fender

Every artistic detail on the Klassy 9 is worthy of a look

The Klassy 9 started life as 2012 Softail, but the bike’s metamorphosis is about as complete as any custom you’ll find. Kanno says, “About half of the neck and half of the drivetrain cradle of a stock bike was used, mainly to preserve the stock H-D® VIN so the bike can still be registered as a Harley-Davidson® under the eyes of Japanese DMV.” The frame was not the only recipient of major surgery in Klassy 9. The billet girder forks and modified swing arm that comprise the high-end suspension are artistic one-off masterpieces. The polished wheels, with a tall 23” hoop up front, complete the bike’s rolling chassis.

Klassy 9 by Ken's Factory engine

Blades reach out like a moto version of a train's cow catcher

The custom aluminum bodywork is made up of a plethora of details that demands a careful study of the bike. It seems that no matter where you look, there is an intriguing style element. For example, don’t get in the way of the three blades that protrude with a vengeance in front of the engine. The paint job itself is a gold and root beer hued, flaming bling-fest. For all of this detail, Klassy 9 is an amazingly unified custom. The overall aesthetic of the bike, while intricate, detailed, and busy, works in a way that is almost surreal.

So what about that powerplant? Well, it is what protrudes from the right side of the 96CI V-twin that demands attention. There sits a Thompson Supercharger fed by electronic fuel injected throttle bodies. That amazing intake wears the forward facing crown of a K&N free-flowing filter. “With the K&N filtration, it’s always our go-to for all of our builds - especially with forced induction,” says Kanno.

The relationship of K&N and Ken's Factory runs deep and strong. “We just finished a prototype filter with K&N to be used with an upcoming high flow air cleaner kit,” Kanno reveals. K&N is more than proud to partner with such a progressive and passionate company. In the end, all we can say is...keep it Klassy, Ken's Factory!

K&N's 63-1137 Harley® AirCharger is Hot Bike Magazine’s 2016 Air Intake of the Year

Hot Bike magazine cover

Hot Bike Magazine's Nov/Dec Issue contains its Best of 2016 picks (Photo Hot Bike)

Well, the accolades for K&N’s Harley® intakes keep rolling in. Hot Bike Magazine has named the K&N 63-1137 its 2016 Intake of the Year. Hot Bike Magazine is a premier publication that caters to serious custom V-twin motorcycle enthusiasts. Hot Bike’s product testing and reviews are respected by the custom bike community for their honesty, depth, and thoroughness. This makes the honor all that much sweeter for K&N.

So what specifically do the editors of Hot Bike Magazine look for in their annual “best of” picks? In their words, “It’s not rocket science, but the conditions are three-fold. Construction, craftsmanship, and quality are the trifecta of judging the who’s who and what’s what of custom motorcycles and the componentry that makes both a man and machine get down the highway in the greatest way possible.” That is a trifecta K&N is proud to be known for!

Jeff Holt holding the K&N 63-1137 intake

Jeff Holt praised the K&N 63-1137 intake's style and performance in an Hot Bike online video

Jeff Holt, Hot Bike Magazine's Editor in Chief, started with praise of the aesthetics of the K&N Harley AirCharger. “They made a really cool sand-cast piece that looks kind of muscle car-y,” Holt said. That’s a great description of the casting of the high-performance intake tube on the 63-1137. The raised natural aluminum K&N logo and trailing ribs that stand out from the matte black body is quickly becoming a favorite of custom builders. Master bike crafter, Mike Fuller, adapted the intake for his lean and mean Harley 77 Sporty.

Yes, the 63-1137 looks fantastic, but looks are just the tip of the iceberg. The intake’s ability to boost the performance of the Harley V-twin is the real story. You’ve got to respect Holt’s succinct assessment of the AirCharger’s abilities. “It makes power,” Holt said. “We’ve put it on the dyno and it has done really well.” However, actions speak louder than words, and Holt runs the intake on his personal bike. That's a tangible testimonial. The 63-1137 performs - period. Just as an example, the K&N dyno shows that a stock 2016 Harley-Davidson® Switchback 103ci can see an estimated increase of over 5 horsepower and almost 8 foot pounds of torque with the intake. Holt has reported that Hot Bike's dyno testing has resulted in even more impressive power numbers with the intake.

K&N is proud to have the recognition and recommendation of a respected publication such as Hot Bike. The magazine is a trusted resource in the custom motorcycle world and K&N is honored to have gained their respect and confidence. In the end, Jeff Holt hit the nail on the head when he said, “All in all, it’d be a really cool part to put on your bike.” We couldn’t agree with you more, Jeff!

Akkaya’s Innovative Superbike-Coach School Offers Quality Rider Training

Can Akkaya of Superbike-Coach

Can Akkaya is Superbike-Coach's founder and lifeblood

Superbike-Coach is one of the most exciting and innovative motorcycle riding schools in the country. The California-based company is a direct reflection of its head riding coach and founder, Can Akkaya. The German expatriate has deep roots in many forms of motorcycle racing and brings that wealth of knowledge to his classroom and on-track instruction.

Akkaya was a mainstay and elite performer on European racetracks in the 1980s and 1990s. His motto was “never surrender,” and his aggressive and relentless racing style earned him the nickname Crazy Can among his fans. After his retirement from competition in 1995, his experience, racing insight, and suspension set-up acumen kept him in high demand in European racing circles. He was also active in other endeavors such a track testing and racing protective gear development. As if that weren’t enough, Akkaya became a prolific writer as well.

Akkaya guides a student into a turn at Superbike-Coach

Akkaya (#36) coaches a student into a turn in his cornering school.

Since 2006, Akkaya’s passion and mission has been to help other motorcyclists ride faster, safer, and have more fun doing it. By his estimates, he has instructed well over 4000 students. As was mentioned earlier, Superbike-Coach is a reflection of its founder. Akkaya says the instruction is “brutally straight up and no excuses are tolerated, but all of it comes in a fun package.” Students should expect lively, intensive, experience-based instruction with no coddling.

Obviously, Akkaya is not the only Superbike-Coach instructor. The head coach takes the instructor selection and training process very seriously. “I am very picky with my staff,” says Akkaya. “They are assistant coaches.” He knows what he wants in a coach, and maybe more importantly, what he doesn’t want. “I don’t have ego-driven instructors racing each other,” Akkaya says. “I don’t pick them because they are ‘promising talents in amateur racing’ and who work for free track time, or worse just an experienced street rider.” Akkaya relies on his decades of riding, racing, and teaching to identify the best-of-the-best to be instructors. In the end, there is a fine line that separates those who can and can’t coach for him, and it’s not just about riding talent. He says, “A good rider isn’t automatically a good teacher.”

Can Akkaya coaches a young rider at Superbike-Coach

Can Akkaya helps a young rider learn the basics. A little guy gets big instruction

The students of the Superbike-Coach program are a diverse group, and the demographic has changed a bit with Akkaya’s move to the US. “Back in Europe I taught many racers, from amateurs to pros,” Akkaya says. “But since I have lived in the USA, it has changed to mainly street riders.” The students who benefit from Superbike-Coach’s tutoring run the gamut from experienced motorcyclists to riders who are new to the sport. The school even offers youth coaching programs. As wide-ranging as the student population of the school is, the curriculum offerings are equally diverse. Superbike-Coach offers one-on-one instruction, street riding instruction, racing instruction, track days, bike preparation, stunt programs, and even motorcycle tours.

Classroom at Superbike-Coach

Classroom sessions at Superbike-Coach are entertaining and informative

Akkaya is an enthusiastic guy. He is excited about motorcycles, racing, and teaching. He is also effusive in his praise of K&N products. “The entire Superbike-Coach fleet breathes trough K&Ns - from our coach bikes, rentals, and trucks. It helps us to maintain performance and reduce costs.” However, for Akkaya, the connection is deeper than just practicality. “My ‘K&N story’ is emotional and goes back to my childhood,” Akkaya reflects. “My dad took me to a car race at the Zolder Circuit in Belgium. I was 8 or 9 years old, and it was my first encounter with motorsports. It was loud, rough, and bad ass. I was stoked and hooked, but there was that one race car shooting flames almost right next to me. It had that orange and white K&N sticker on its door.” Akkaya said that image was indelibly imprinted in his young mind, and that K&N has represented performance and excitement ever since. Fittingly, Akkaya set a lap record on that same Zolder track later in life and is now sponsored by K&N.

Akkaya’s passion is infectious. He raced with it, he teaches with it, and he is passionate about one of the newest aspects of his school. “This year I am the official rider trainer of the US Air Force. That is such an honor, especially because I’ve moved to the USA and love the country.” K&N is proud to be part of that important mission with Can Akkaya and the Superbike-Coach School.

If it’s time to take your riding to the next level, Superbike-Coach most likely has a program to fit your needs and desires. For more information, visit the Superbike-Coach website.

The International Motorcycle Show in Long Beach Was a Big Success

Motorcycles Parked at the International Motorcycle Show in Long Beach, CA

The parking lot was full and the weather was great at the Long Beach IMS

Based just on sheer attendance, the Progressive International Motorcycle Show’s first stop in Long Beach, California, was a roaring success. The foot traffic both inside and outside of the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center was refreshing and encouraging for the sport. The heavy attendance is a direct result of the IMS's reputation for delivering a quality product to the masses, and the 2016-2017 incarnation of the event is taking that reputation and raising the bar to another level altogether.

IMS is the annual festival of all things two wheeled, that makes a trek across the US like a rolling city. It’s a chance for motorcycle enthusiasts of all varieties to sit on, test ride, and lust after the newest motorcycle models on the market. It is also a chance for the masses to learn techniques, try on equipment, see the latest performance products, and just take in the atmosphere. In a nutshell, IMS is a perfect storm - a convergence of an enthusiastic moto-culture and a responsive and progressive consumer motorcycle industry.

K&N display ar the International Motorcycle Show in Long Beach, CA

The K&N intake and filter display was a mainstay of the IMS Marketplace

The lines of folks waiting outside the venue to test ride the rolling hardware of the various manufacturers speaks to the growing national interest in motorcycling. Most of the major marquees had their newest and most popular models lined up and ready for repeated group test rides around the downtown Long Beach area. Those same manufacturers had large and attractive displays inside the convention center for show-goers to touch, study, and straddle their offerings.

There was a great mix of entertainment inside the show as well. At the same time an adventure world traveler was taking about navigating the mud in Zimbabwe, an artist was painting a motorcycle-themed masterpiece with only sticks and black dye. In another area, there was a demonstration on how to lift a dropped motorcycle, while outside an aerial display of jumping and stunting was underway. Entertaining activities and demonstrations were ubiquitous throughout the show weekend.

Classic bikes at the International Motorcycle Show in Long Beach, CA

Classic motorcycles brought history to life in Long Beach

A highlight of the Long Beach IMS was the 8th consecutive J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show. The machines on display throughout the show hall were a hit with the strolling crowds. Custom builders consider an IMS trophy one of the biggest honors achievable in recognition of a project. In long Beach, Andrew Ursich's "Pink Panther" won the Free Style Class. The Modified Harley Class was won by "Klassy 9" by Ken’s Factory. Top honors in the MOD Custom Class were garnered by AFT Custom's 1976 Honda racer, while Anthony Robinson's 1969 Triumph T-100R took the Retro MOD Class. K&N is now a sponsor of the competition and we will be bringing you bike and builder spotlights for each of the stops of IMS.

Of course, K&N was a powerful presence at IMS in Long Beach. Not only was the K&N product display a popular stop for performance accessory fans at the show, but K&N filters and intakes were a mainstay on the custom and vintage bikes that graced the show floor.

The remaining stops of the IMS are:

New York - December 9-11

Washington, D.C. – January 6-8

Dallas – January 13-15

Cleveland – January 27-29

Minneapolis – February 3-5

Chicago – February 10-12
