The International Motorcycle Show in Long Beach Was a Big Success

Motorcycles Parked at the International Motorcycle Show in Long Beach, CA

The parking lot was full and the weather was great at the Long Beach IMS

Based just on sheer attendance, the Progressive International Motorcycle Show’s first stop in Long Beach, California, was a roaring success. The foot traffic both inside and outside of the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center was refreshing and encouraging for the sport. The heavy attendance is a direct result of the IMS's reputation for delivering a quality product to the masses, and the 2016-2017 incarnation of the event is taking that reputation and raising the bar to another level altogether.

IMS is the annual festival of all things two wheeled, that makes a trek across the US like a rolling city. It’s a chance for motorcycle enthusiasts of all varieties to sit on, test ride, and lust after the newest motorcycle models on the market. It is also a chance for the masses to learn techniques, try on equipment, see the latest performance products, and just take in the atmosphere. In a nutshell, IMS is a perfect storm - a convergence of an enthusiastic moto-culture and a responsive and progressive consumer motorcycle industry.

The K&N intake and filter display was a mainstay of the IMS Marketplace

The lines of folks waiting outside the venue to test ride the rolling hardware of the various manufacturers speaks to the growing national interest in motorcycling. Most of the major marquees had their newest and most popular models lined up and ready for repeated group test rides around the downtown Long Beach area. Those same manufacturers had large and attractive displays inside the convention center for show-goers to touch, study, and straddle their offerings.

There was a great mix of entertainment inside the show as well. At the same time an adventure world traveler was taking about navigating the mud in Zimbabwe, an artist was painting a motorcycle-themed masterpiece with only sticks and black dye. In another area, there was a demonstration on how to lift a dropped motorcycle, while outside an aerial display of jumping and stunting was underway. Entertaining activities and demonstrations were ubiquitous throughout the show weekend.

Classic motorcycles brought history to life in Long Beach

A highlight of the Long Beach IMS was the 8th consecutive J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show. The machines on display throughout the show hall were a hit with the strolling crowds. Custom builders consider an IMS trophy one of the biggest honors achievable in recognition of a project. In long Beach, Andrew Ursich's "Pink Panther" won the Free Style Class. The Modified Harley Class was won by "Klassy 9" by Ken’s Factory. Top honors in the MOD Custom Class were garnered by AFT Custom's 1976 Honda racer, while Anthony Robinson's 1969 Triumph T-100R took the Retro MOD Class. K&N is now a sponsor of the competition and we will be bringing you bike and builder spotlights for each of the stops of IMS.

Of course, K&N was a powerful presence at IMS in Long Beach. Not only was the K&N product display a popular stop for performance accessory fans at the show, but K&N filters and intakes were a mainstay on the custom and vintage bikes that graced the show floor.

The remaining stops of the IMS are:

New York - December 9-11

Washington, D.C. – January 6-8

Dallas – January 13-15

Cleveland – January 27-29

Minneapolis – February 3-5

Chicago – February 10-12

K&N Performance Air Intake RK-3946B is the Power Solution for Your Harley® FL

RK-3946B intake assembled

The RK-3946B intake is simple to install and offers up guaranteed power gains

So you have your own tools and enjoy wrenching on your Harley? Congratulations, you just passed every test required to install K&N’s high performance RK-3946B intake to your late model Harley-Davidson® FL model. Typically it takes 90 minutes or less for a handy rider to bolt on this great looking intake and its impressive power gains.

Yes, you’ll appreciate K&N’s crystal clear instruction sheet that includes a series of photos that leaves nothing in the process to the imagination. However, what you’ll appreciate even more is the pleasure you’ll experience the first time you feel the guaranteed performance increase that the RK-3946B will breathe into your Road King or Glide.

RK-3946B installed on a Harley

The intake's powder coated cover is a great styling match for the Harley V-twin

Want an example of that performance gain? When bolted to a stock 103 CI 2015 Street Glide, the RK-3946B intake showed an estimated gain of over 7.5 horsepower on K&N’s dynamometer. Even more impressively, the Street Glide’s torque numbers revealed an estimated increase of almost 9 foot-pounds. That combination of an increase in horsepower and torque will make for exciting throttle response, faster off-the-line power, and arm-stretching roll-on acceleration.

The added bonus in bolting on the RK-3946B is the clean and mean look that the intake adds to the V-twin power-plant. K&N’s designers and engineers outdid themselves developing the custom aluminum backing plate that mounts directly to the throttle body via an aluminum internal-run breather system. To cap the intake off, the black powder coated filter cover is a subtle, all-business focal-point.

RK-3946B intake parts

The K&N RK-3946B comes with clear and easy-to-follow instructions

Sandwiched between that mounting plate and cover is one of the legendary K&N high-flow, reusable air filters. The filter’s cotton gauze media not only allows maximum airflow, but the oil impregnated fibers make for an extremely effective filtration system. When it’s time to wash the filter in the RK-3946B intake, the process is simple using the 99-5000 filter service kit. The kit includes the cleaning fluid and re-oiling spray that will get you back on the road quickly.

If your Harley is on the list below, the American-made RK-3946B is a no-brainer as your next performance and style accessory.

The K&N RK-3946B fits the following Harley-Davidson models:

K&N's Own Steve Williams Finishes Third in Super Comp National Standing

Steve Williams, K&N, NHRA, drag racing

Steve Williams was third in the final Super Comp national standings.

Steve Williams started his drag racing season as one of the best drivers in the nation. He ended up third in national points in Super Comp out of more than 1,100 cars and drivers in the country. It all started when he won the Winternationals at Pomona in February and ended with a flurry that moved him up two places in the final standings at Noble, Oklahoma.

“It’s one of the better cars I’ve had,” said Williams, the Chief Engineering Officer for K&N Engineering. “It’s won like six national events. It’s a really, really good car.”

Williams has been drag racing for the better part of two decades. He has finished in the top 10 nationally on several occasions, “I think now I’ve finished every number but number one in the top 10," Williams said.

After a successful season, Williams is preparing for 2017. He is updating and upgrading his car and putting together his schedule.

“There’s about a thousand guys that compete in this class,” Williams said. “Actively there’s probably, guys that actually run for points, probably six or seven hundred of those. You end up having to freshen up both motors, replacing things, transmissions, servicing. So it’s more of a servicing, getting ready for next year."

“For me personally, the hardest thing is trying to figure out my schedule, because there is so much going on here, the growth of the company. A lot of times I put 17 or 18 events on the calendar, that way I can get to 12. I can cross off certain ones when there’s a board meeting or something gets in the way.”

Steve Williams, K&N, NHRA, drag racing

Steve Williams opened the drag racing season winning the WInternationals.

Williams won the first national event in Super Comp at the Winternationals in Pomona. He followed with a pair of runner-up finishes at Phoenix and Las Vegas.

“It kind of hurt me this year because we were pretty busy,” Williams said. “I started off really strong. The first three national events we went to, we won and runner-upped at both of them. I had almost a perfect score in national events. You can only claim three national events and you can go to six.”

Despite the hot start, he missed some events. One was practically in his hometown. But Williams found some different tracks to run at and kept his momentum going.

“Right when we were getting ready to get started division racing, we got really busy here,” Williams said. “So I ended up not being able to go to Fontana, which is 30 miles from my house. I ended up not going to Boise which I’ve won like four or five times in the last five years, 10 years maybe.”

Instead, he raced at Woodburn in Oregon and Noble, Oklahoma. He went three rounds at both tracks and secured his spot in the national standings.

“We finished up really strong,” Williams said. “We still had a shot. You had to win the last two division races. I’ve actually done that before, I’ve won two division races back to back.”

Steve Williams drag racing Las Vegas Motor Speedway

It came down to the final race of the year for Williams and he made it count

Over the summer, Williams had good runs at Sonoma and Seattle. He credited the success to a combination of the new Hoosier tires the drivers were using and a torque converter his team put in his car. The two components gelled and made the car extremely easy to race.

“Whenever the car does what it’s supposed to do, it makes racing a lot easier,” Williams said. “This car is just very predictable. The other side of it is I drove well. Whenever that comes together, you drive well and you have a car that’s where it’s supposed to be, that’s when you are going to go rounds and have a chance to win.”

His only national event win came at the Winternationals in Pomona. Williams was competitive all year, but he knows there is room for improvement.

“Nobody likes to lose,” Williams said. “The championship really came down to – there were three races this year, division races, where I red-lit by a couple of thousandths in which I had a bye the next run – if I don’t red light … That’s 60 points right there, and you’re asking why I won the championship. That’s the difference between losing and winning. It’s that close.”

At 60 years old, Williams has no interest in slowing down. He says he is racing drivers half his age and is still competitive.

“Anything can happen in this sport,” Williams said. “I think that’s what really draws people to it. Even as you get older, you can still do really well. You don’t see a lot of 60 year old guys driving.”

Steve Williams has a career of successes behind him and doesn't plan on stopping any time soon

However, Williams said it might be time to focus on his daughter’s racing career. His daughter Shelby is 13 and racing in the junior dragster program. Williams said he might continue racing for a couple more years and start putting more time into his daughter’s car and career. He is already working on a Super Street Car for her.

“It seems like she wants to keep driving,” Williams said. “When I think about my future, it’s about my daughter racing.”

Williams wanted to thank those who supported him not only this season, but throughout his racing career.

“You always end up with a bunch of people to say thanks to,” Williams said. “First of all, K&N, not only K&N, but Tom McGann is so supportive. For me, if I didn’t have Travis Hodges, driving the truck and trailer, I just couldn’t do it. Thank yous also go out to John Reedy and Doug Whitten. Last, but definitely not least I would like to thank my wife, Janet, and my daughter, Shelby, for all their continued love and support. All my friends, all these guys, we’ve raced together for years, it’s kind of a tight family. But to be honest with you, it wouldn’t be any fun if those guys didn’t race anymore. There’s the competition part of it, there’s also that camaraderie. When one guy’s car breaks, the other guys jump in and help them fix it. It’s both the competition and the family atmosphere that keep me going.

K&N Air Intake for 2015 & 2016 Ford F-150 Trucks Offers Estimated Boost of 12.7 Horsepower

The K&N 63-2591 Air Intake System for the 2015-2016 Ford F-150.

The K&N 63-2591 air intake system includes a K&N RC-5173 universal chrome air filter

The Ford F-150 pickup truck continues to be one of the most popular motor vehicles offered in the United States. In fact, both the 2015 and 2016 models are attracting the majority of new car buyers.

The 2015 and 2016 versions weigh less than previous F-150s because they are made of high-strength military-grade, aluminum-alloy on a steel frame. They offer 12,200-pounds of towing capability, 3,300-pound payload, improved power-to-weight ratio, and a five star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Four engines power the trucks. A new 2.7-liter turbocharged EcoBoost V6 that delivers 325-horsepower and 375-lb-ft of torque, a new 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V6 that produces 282-horsepower and 253-lb-ft of torque, a 3.5-liter Twin-Turbo EcoBoost V6 that delivers 365-horsepower and 420-lb-ft of torque, and a 5.0-liter Ti-VCT V8 that generates 385-horsepower and 387-lb-ft of torque.

The bed of the truck includes a new BoxLink flexible, configurable universal pickup box that contains an e-Track™ cargo management system and LED box lights. The bed includes stowable loading ramps, remote tailgate release, integrated tailgate step with lift assist, and deployable box side steps.

The 2016 model is equipped with a Ford Sync 3 infotainment system while the 2015 has a MyFord Touch system and the Sync 3 was available as an upgrade.

The K&N 63-2591 Air Intake includes an air filter that can be stretched another 1/16 of an inch.

The K&N 63-2591 air intake system includes molded pliable rubber flanges to absorb vibration

The K&N 63-2591 AirCharger air intake system is designed to work in the 2015 and 2016 Ford F-150 pickup truck with the 5.0L Coyote motor.

The intake kit is guaranteed to increase horsepower and increase acceleration. In fact, tests have shown an estimated 12.74-horsepower boost at 4555 rpm. It will also improve the throttle response and engine noise.

The intake includes a K&N RC-5173 universal chrome air filter that features a cotton gauze media that has been treated with a special grade of filter oil that makes the cotton strands sticky. The filter also includes ultra-strong molded pliable rubber flanges that absorb vibration and assures a secure attachment. It is washable and reusable and has a recommended cleaning interval of 100,000 miles, depending on driving conditions.

K&N also offers an air filter cleaning kit, 99-5000, that is specially formulated to cleanse and recharge the filter so it can be used again. K&N is so sure about the quality of the filter that it backs it with a 10-Year/Million Mile Limited Warranty. The company promises that the filter will perform for up to 10 years or 1,000,000 miles without needing replacement.

The intake is designed to replace the factory air intake system to create a less restrictive path for the airflow to reach the engine. The system also includes an aerodynamically engineered high-density polyethylene tube that channels the air into the engine’s throttle body and accommodates the factory EVAP vent line and crankcase vent hose. The tube is precisely shaped to reduce turbulence and accelerate airflow into the engine. There is also a heat shield that blocks hot engine air from entering the intake, assuring that only cool air gets into the engine.

The K&N 63-2591 air intake kit is easy to install using the existing factory mounting points in about 90 minutes with common hand tools.

The K&N 63-2591 AirCharger air intake system is designed for the following vehicles:

Top Dragster Driver Kathy Fisher Looks Toward a Strong 2017 PDRA/NHRA Season

Kathy Fisher sits in the K&N Top Dragster.

Top Dragster Kathy Fisher qualified for every event she ran in 2016 with an average of 9th

K&N Top Dragster driver Kathy Fisher could be upset about not making a PDRA or NHRA final round in 2016, but that’s not how Kathy rolls. Instead, she’s looking at the positives in her second season driving the K&N-sponsored 272-inch-wheelbase American dragster on the way to what she expects will be an even-quicker 2017.

“We didn’t make it to a final round and win like we did last year, but we put a lot of rounds together in many races,” Kathy said. “Anyone who knows the sport knows that at the end of the year it comes down to ‘Hey, where’d you finish in the points?’ And we finished Number 4 in the PDRA in Top Dragster, which is pretty good for only making six of the nine events.”

She capped that late-season points charge with her quickest-ever eighth-mile pass at the PDRA World Finals at Virginia Motorsports Park in October. The team had been chasing some gremlins in the car that weekend, but a solo run in Round 1 of eliminations helped her and her husband/crew chief Kevin Fisher find the missing piece and nail it for the next run.

“When I did my burnout, I went, ‘Oh, we’re fixed!’” Kathy said. “My competition broke during his burnout so I got to make a single pass and the darn thing went out there and made a 3.935 with 0.935 sixty-foot time. She was just absolutely hauling the mail.”

The Ohio-based Performance by Fisher crew also put another huge feather in their collective cap: Across all of the PDRA and highly competitive NHRA events—both Divisional and National—they ran, Kathy qualified for all of them, averaging a ninth-place spot on the Eliminations ladder every weekend. She attributes that consistency to a reliable combination of 547 cubic-inch engine with an F2 Procharger.

Kathy Fisher's 2015 American dragster completes a burnout.

Kathy Fisher capped her consistent 2016 season with a personal best 3.935-second eight-mile pass

The custom-tailored K&N air filter is a major part of that reliability, having been designed to flow enough air to feed the 2,100-horsepower V8. The engine also uses a K&N billet oil filter, which moves enough oil to keep the bellowing engine lubricated and also allows the crew to see any particulates from bearing and other engine-part wear. The fishers also use K&N products on everything they own— including their street-use Suburban, Colorado, Corvette, and even on Kathy’s Harley-Davidson—and install them at their shop in Lima, Ohio.

It’s not just the dragster breathing air and moving oil through K&N filters, either; the Fishers also installed a heavy-duty K&N filter on their toter-home, which has improved mileage on the long hauls to and from the racetrack.

“When you’re towing all of those miles, every little half-to-one miles per gallon you can get on those big rigs towing all of that weight,” Kathy said. “We saw immediate advantage when we switched over to the K&N.”

The quickest pass at the season’s end and consistency all point toward big things in 2017; Kathy expects the chassis should be able to find another 0.05 to 0.07 in elapsed time. The Fishers will be working on a new Procharger combination that should help her find that time. In addition, after making six of the nine PDRA events, Kathy has plans to run the full eight-race PDRA calendar to chase the top championship spot along with several NHRA divisional and national events. K&N will be onboard at all of the team’s 2017 stops.

Kathy Fisher's 2015 American dragster makes a pass during the 2016 season.

Kathy Fisher plans to run the full 2017 PDRA calendar to pursue the Top Dragster championship

“If you want to beat the champions, you have to use championship parts,” Kathy said. “The company is so good to work with. It’s not just cookie-cutter solutions; they’re doing research and development. Even if a product is awesome, they’ll still look to see if they can make an improvement here or there because they listen to customer feedback.”

Kathy met Kevin, her husband and crew chief, through drag racing 17 years ago. After celebrating their nuptials at the local track while they were both bracket-racing, they eventually increased the capability of their equipment until they took on running a Top Dragster in PDRA and NHRA competition. Kevin raced alongside Kathy until stepping aside after the 2014 season to take over crew chief duties with Kathy in the Top Dragster for 2015. The couple star in their own reality show, Married With Dragsters, about their marriage and racing partnership.
