Jack Roush Gives 30 Years of Experience to Roush Fenway Racing

Jack Roush is an automotive icon and head of Roush Fenway Racing

Jack Roush, founder of Roush Fenway Racing, has been a major player in the automotive industry long before he started the race team.

Born in Covington, Kentucky in 1942, Roush earned a mathematics degree and minored in physics at Berea College and a Master’s Degree in Scientific Mathematics from Eastern Michigan University.

Soon after graduating Berea College in 1964, he moved to Detroit and was hired by Ford Motor Company. By 1966 he had been drawn to the company’s motorsports activities and had joined a group of fellow racing fans called, “The Fastbacks.”

After leaving Ford in 1970, he partnered with Wayne Gapp and formed a team that raced Pro Stock racecars. It quickly gained national attention after the duo won several racing events and one championship each for major hot rod sanctioning groups including the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), International Hot Rod Association (IHRA), and the American Hot Rod Association (AHRA).

Armed with a wealth of racing experience, he started Jack Roush Performance Engineering in 1976. Although he did not race during the late 1970s, he remained a part of the sport building engines for racing teams through the early 1980s.

He returned to racing in 1984 and competed in the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) road-racing series. He won 24 national championships and titles in the series including 12 manufacturer’s championships, and won 119 races while partnered with such acclaimed drivers as Tommy Kendall, Scott Pruett, and Willy T. Ribbs. He also won 10 consecutive sedan-class championships at the 24 Hours of Daytona, teaming with drivers Kendall, Pruett, Mark Martin, Bill Elliott, Ricky Rudd and Kyle Petty as well as actor Paul Newman and Olympic star Bruce Jenner.

In 1988, he partnered with driver Mark Martin and launched his first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series team, which was then known as the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. In October 1989 the pair earned their first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victory at North Carolina Motor Speedway. Over time the partnership became one of the most successful in NASCAR history. The Martin-Roush team earned 35 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victories.

In 2005, Roush joined Doug Yates and formed Roush Yates Engines. Based in Mooresville, North Carolina, the business manufactures engines for Roush Fenway Racing, Richard Petty Motorsports, and several other teams involved in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR XFINITY Series, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and ARCA Series.

In 2007, Roush Racing and Fenway Sports Group (FSG) formed Roush Fenway Racing.

Roush has won eight championships across NASCAR’s three premier series (2000 – Truck Series with Greg Biffie; 2002 – XFINITY Series with Greg Biffie; 2007 – XFINITY Series with Carl Edwards; 2011 XFINITY Series with Ricky Stenhouse Jr.; 2012 XFINITY Series with Ricky Stenhouse Jr.; 2015 XFINITY Series with Chris Buescher; 2003 – Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series with Matt Kenseth, and 2004 – Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series with Kurt Busch).

Roush won his first Daytona 500 and his 300th NASCAR victory in 2009. In 2010 Roush Fenway Racing turned its one-millionth mile in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. In 2012, Roush claimed his 300th NASCAR victory with his second win in the Daytona 500.

Located in Concord, North Carolina, Roush Fenway Racing employs about 250 people including four drivers –- Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Trevor Bayne, Ryan Reed, and Ty Majeski.

The team prides itself in developing its drivers from within. Stenhouse earned his experience racing in the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) Series before he graduated to the XFINITY Series. Bayne drove for Roush Fenway in XFINITY events before moving over to the No. 6 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series program. Reed and Majeski are young drivers who are competing for the team in XFINITY events.

Stenhouse pilots the No. 17 Ford Fusion. Born in 1987 in Olive Branch, Mississippi, he now resides in Mooreville, North Carolina. He started racing go-karts at the tender age of 6 years old. By the time he was 15, he had 47 A-main karting victories and more than 90 podium finishes. He graduated into 360 winged sprint cars in 2003 and won the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame Driver Poll and Dirt Winged Sprint Car Rookie of the Year. He was also tapped the Memphis (Tennessee) Motorsports Park Rookie of the Year.

Stenhouse started racing the USAC National Sprint Car Series in 2004. He had a breakout year in 2006 when he was the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame Driver Poll Wild Card title winner in both the 360 and 410 winged sprint car divisions.

He won two of three races at the start of the 2007 racing season including the Copper on Dirt at Manzanita Speedway and both the USAC National Sprint Car and Silver Crown feature events.

He joined Tony Stewart Racing and raced for that team in the USAC National Sprint and Midget cars division. He won his second start in the USAC National Midget Car Series at Tri-State Speedway.

He won rookie of the year in both the USAC Midget and Sprint car divisions in 2007.

Stenhouse joined Roush Fenway Racing in 2007. In his first season in the ARCA Series in 2008, he posted two wins, three poles, 10 top five and 14 top-10 finishes in 21 starts. He led the point standings for 13 weeks, before a late-race accident in the season finale ended his title hopes.

In 2009, Stenhouse moved into the NXS and recorded his first career pole at Iowa Speedway and achieved one top-five and two top-10 finishes in seven races.

In 2010, he was named the NXS Rookie of the Year. He won the title after coming back from the largest point deficit in the award’s history. In 32 NXS starts that year, he recorded three top-five and eight top-10 finishes, and finished outside the top-15 five times in his final 18 races. He won back-to-back NASCAR XFINITY Series championships in 2011 and 2012.

Stenhouse is a golf and basketball fan and likes to work out. He also is a fan of country music.

Born in 1991 in Knoxville, Tennessee and now residing in Mt. Holly, North Carolina, Trevor Bayne started racing go-karts when he was 5 years old. In the eight years he competed in the go-kart circuit he achieved three World Championships, and collected more than 300 feature wins and 18 State and Track Championships.

He graduated to the Allison Legacy Race Series when he was 13 years old and quickly became the youngest top rookie of the series. In a two-year period racing in the series he garnered 14 wins, 19 pole positions and 30 top-five finishes in 41 starts. He won the series National Championship in 2005.

In 2007, when he was just 15 years old, Bayne moved on to compete in the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series Southern Division.

His career took a fortunate turn in 2008 when he joined Dale Earnhardt Inc.’s driver development program. That year he started competing in the NASCAR Camping World East Series and collected his first series win at the Thompson (Connecticut) International Speedway. In that year he recorded six top-five and seven top-10 finishes and finished in fourth in the NASCAR Camping World East point standings.

Bayne began the 2009-racing season finishing second in the Toyota All-Star Showdown at Irwindale Speedway. Due to this achievement, he won Sunoco Rookie of the Race honors. He debuted in the NXS that year at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, where he finished 23rd driving Jimmy Mean’s No. 52 car. He joined Michael Waltrip Racing as a part-time driver in 2009 racing the No. 99 car. His first race behind the wheel he captured the outside pole at Nashville Super Speedway. In 15 contests he earned one pole and two top-10s and finished inside the top 15 seven times.

He joined Roush Fenway Racing in October 2010 and competed in seven NXS races.

On February 20, 2011 when he was just 20 years old Bayne became the youngest winner in the history of the Daytona 500. The win was achieved in only his second career Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series start. He went on to win his first career NASCAR XFINITY Series event in Texas and garnered 14 top-10 and five top-five finishes in 29 NXS starts that year.

He continued racing in the NXS until the end of the 2014 season and then began competing in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series fulltime in 2015 driving the No.6 AdvoCare Ford Fusion.

In 2016, Bayne earned two top-five and five top-10 finishes and finished third at the Daytona International Speedway.

2017 marks Bayne’s third fulltime season in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.

When not racing, his activities include biking, wakeboarding and snowboarding. He is also involved with Back2Back Ministries’ orphanages in Monterrey, Mexico.

Born in 1993 in Bakersfield, California and now residing in Davidson, North Carolina, Ryan Reed’s racing career began when he was 4 years old when he won the Kid’s Kart Championship. By the time he was 8 years old he was the Junior 1 Comer and HPV Karting Track Champion.

In 2009 he was the Legends Division Track Champion at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale and was named Rookie of the Year in the Super Late Model Division in 2010. He was the youngest winner at the Toyota Speedway in the Super Late Model Division.

In 2010 he moved from California to North Carolina to get more involved in racing and in 2011 he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. He was told that he would never race again.

Determined to fight back, he returned to California and found Dr. Anne Peters of the University of Southern California’s Clinical Diabetes Program, who treated Reed and made it possible for him to return to racing. He made essential life style changes that included a strict diet and exercise, the use of devices that provided on track data, and reported to his team of doctors in California.

He returned to racing that year and competed in three races of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East.

In 2012 he competed in 14 ARCA races and recorded one top-five and six top-10 finishes. He also raced in one event of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Reed joined Roush Fenway Racing in 2013. That year he competed in six events in the NASCAR XFINITY Series. He finished in the top-10 in most of his races. His best finish was fourth at Daytona International Speedway.

In October 2013, Roush Fenway Racing announced a partnership with the American Diabetes Association’s Drive to Stop Diabetes and Lilly Diabetes and Reed competed full time in the NASCAR XFINITY Series in 2014.

Reed started the 2015 racing season with a win at Daytona. It was his first career win and the first win for Roush Fenway Racing in the XFINITY Series at Daytona.

In 2016 Reed participated in the inaugural NXS Chase. Although he did not quite make it to the final round, he did finish sixth in the driver point standings due to seven top-10 finishes.

Ty Majeski is a new addition to Roush Fenway Racing and debuted for the team in June.

A spokesperson for Roush Fenway noted that driver lineups change from year to year for a variety of reasons. The team has had 52 different drivers compete in NASCAR and 19 of them have won events for Roush Fenway. Eleven of the 19 won their first race for the team and nine of the drivers have won a Cup race. Eight of them were new winners.

Roush Fenway does a number of things to prepare for a race that includes the drivers, pit crews and race teams.

For example, the drivers spend time in simulators, watch film of previous races, and work out to maintain optimal physical stamina. The pit crews practice on an average of two or three times a week and work out three days a week in the gym.

The team’s personnel also prepare the cars during the week following instructions from the Research and Development Department and team engineers.

The spokesperson for Roush Fenway explained that it generally takes 30 to 45 days to prepare a car from the ground up.

“This includes building the chassis, fabricating and handing the body, time in the paint and body shop and final set up plate as the car is prepared to go to the track,” he said. “Each team takes two race cars to the track each week –- a primary and a backup.”

So far this season, Roush Fenway has competed in more than 55 races. It has won one race, finished in the top 5 in five races, finished in the top 10 in 19 races and has logged more than 12,994 laps and 17,560.5 miles.

K&N Street Shaker Intake Add Power to Your 2001–2017 Harley FL or FX Motorcycle

The K&N Street Shaker intake installed on a Harley-Davidson

The Street Shaker intake adds a custom look and power to modern Harley-Davidson motorcycles

Nothing screams performance like a muscle car with a shaker intake. K&N’s Street Shaker intakes for modern Harley-Davidson® motorcycles exude that same great high performance aesthetic. However, great looks aren’t the end of the story. Proving that style and substance can go hand-in-hand, the Street Shaker comes with a guaranteed performance increase.

The Street Shaker is a complete intake kit that replaces the restrictive stock intake for bolt-on customization. The high-volume, cast aluminum intake housing mounts easily to the throttle body. The housing features raised cast fins on its aggressive air scoop shape. The intake incorporates K&N’s innovative internal breathers which eliminate the stock Harley® external plumbing.

A big factor in the increased power and throttle response is the integrated internal velocity stack that feeds a high volume of clean air to the V-twin engine. That clean air comes compliments of the K&N cotton gauze filter media that offers up both protection and performance with its high-flow pleated design.

The black version of the Street Shaker intake features natural aluminum accents

The performance increase that you can experience after the estimated 90 minutes that it takes to install the Street Shaker is impressive. K&N’s testing of the intake installed on an otherwise stock 2015 103CI Harley-Davidson Softail Deluxe showed an estimated increase of almost 5 horsepower and over 5 foot pounds of torque. That is power you can feel off the line and as you roll on the throttle.

The K&N filter in the Street Shaker comes pre-oiled and ready to install directly out of the box. The filter element is fully washable and reusable. This puts an end to the incessant need to buy and replace restrictive paper filters.

The intake comes in a natural cast aluminum finish that perfectly matches the blonde Harley-Davidson jugs in the RK-3950S and the RK-3951S. The RK-3950 and RK-3951 are the matte black versions which are accented with natural aluminum on the fins and the K&N logo.

Harrison Burton is Racing His Way to the Top of the K&N Pro Series East

Harrison Burton, K&N, Memphis, NASCAR Next

Harrison Burton celebrating his win at Memphis International Raceway in the K&N Pro Series East

Harrison Burton is slowly running away with the K&N Pro Series East by leading the standings in points. Burton has won three races, the most races of any driver in the series. He has yet to finish outside the top 10. He has six top-five finishes and six top-10 finishes.

In his six starts this year, Burton has accumulated 262 points. Burton, who is a NASCAR Next driver, also is racing in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and doing well. In his first full year in 2016 in the K&N Pro Series East Standings, Burton finished in seventh place.

“Any time you can win in the K&N Series it’s a whole lot of fun, especially in a place like Memphis,” said Burton, who is a driver for HScott Motor Sports in the K&N Pro Series and Kyle Busch MotorSports in the Truck Series. “Winning my first race was a lot of fun, I could remember when I was a little kid I always wanted to win big races and dreaming of seeing myself on Sundays, and to win my first K&N race at Bristol was really cool.”

In the race at Bristol, Burton started from the pole and led all but two of the 70 laps before rain caused the race to end, giving Burton his first career K&N Pro Series win.

“I feel like every team circles this race on their calendar," Burton said. "We kind of wanted to run the whole race and win it that way. We were confident our car was good enough that we could win it that way. I feel like it would've been cool to cross the line in dry conditions. But, I'll take it. I never wanted it to rain so bad in my life."

Since that race, Burton has enjoyed plenty of success in the series, winning two more races at South Boston in Virginia and most recently, Memphis.

Harrison Burton, K&N, NASCAR Next

Harrison Burton is currently sitting atop of the standings in the K&N Pro Series East.

“We need to show up to the race track like we always should, there is a reason we are in the position that we are in, we need to go hard and fight for the win, and if we get away from that we will end up hurting ourselves” said Burton.

Burton is the son of former NASCAR Series driver Jeff Burton. The elder Burton was in the stands to watch his son win the race at South Boston. The track holds many fond memories for the whole Burton family. Jeff Burton’s brother, Ward, also raced in the NASCAR Cup Series and started his career at South Boston Speedway.

“We had so much family support when we raced here,” Jeff Burton said “They would sit up there in the third turn and they would call it the third turn Brew Crew. It was a lot of people, They showed us so much support Tonight for Harrison, there were a lot of people on the backstretch here to support him. It’s really cool.”

Harrison Burton has a 28-point lead over Todd Gilliland, the reigning K&N Pro Series West champion who is running both series in 2017. The next NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race is at Berlin Raceway in Michigan.

K&N Air Intakes for Harley-Davidson Add Power and Style for a Custom Ride

2015 Harley-Davidson Sportster 1200 with K&N air intake

K&N air intakes for Harley-Davidson motorcycles add horsepower, torque, and horsepower

The Street Hammer high flow air intakes nail home a guaranteed power increase on a wide range of Harley-Davidson® motorcycles. The exciting line of performance intakes is available in four unique versions so you can swing the Hammer that best fits your ride.

The Street Hammer is a full intake that replaces the restrictive stock unit. In addition to a serious boost in performance, the Street Hammer high flow air intake is designed to protect your V-twin from dust, dirt, and other ravages of the road.

The chrome Street Hammer intake for Harley-Davidson motorcycles

The chrome Street Hammer intake adds style and performance to your Harley

The heart of each Street Hammer intake is the custom aluminum backing plate that mounts directly to the throttle body via an aluminum integrated, internal-run breather system. A vibration absorbing mounting gasket helps tame the intake shake inherent in that legendary 45-degree engine layout.

The estimated performance increases when running the Street Hammer are impressive. As an example, K&N’s rigorous in-house testing showed an estimated increase of almost 4.5 horsepower in an otherwise stock 2016 883cc Sportster.

The black Street Hammer intake for Harley-Davidson motorcycles

Shown here in the black version, the Street Hammer intake is a ready-to-install kit

The estimated gain almost doubled in a 2015 1200cc Sportster with the dynamometer line showing an increase of about 8.75 horsepower. See all the details on the dyno test results for other models on the Street Hammer intake product pages.

Of course, the Street Hammer incorporates K&N’s legendary oil-impregnated, cotton gauze filter media in the round air cleaner element. Those multiple pleats keep the clean air flowing wash after wash with the fully reusable filter.

The X versions of the Street Hammer intake incorporate an extra-tall filter element

The K&N 10-Year/Million Mile Limited Warranty means that you will never need to buy another power-robbing paper filter element.

The Street Hammer is available for a range of Sportster®, Dyna®, Softail®, and touring models. The intake is offered in chrome with the RK-3933, RK-3944, RK-3945, RK-3946, and RK-3954. It is also available capped in a stealthy black with the RK-3933B, RK-3944B, RK-3945B, RK-3946B, and RK-3954B.

If your V-twin needs more air because of performance modifications or a larger build, you can opt for the chrome RK-3933X or RK-3946X or the black RK-3933XB or RK-3946XB. The X versions of the Street Hammer incorporate an extra-tall air filter for an increased volume of airflow.

Front Row Motorsports is Becoming one of NASCAR's Most Exciting Small Teams

Front Row Motorsports driver Landon Cassill drives the #34 car in NASCAR Monster Energy Cup series

Front Row Motorsports driver Landon Cassill drives the #34 car in NASCAR Monster Energy Cup series

There are NASCAR racing teams known as Goliaths, that are perennial threats to be the top teams of their class. Then there are the Davids, the racing teams that are steady and compete with fewer resources than the top teams have and stay relevant year after year. Front Row Motorsports, located in Statesville, North Carolina, is one of those Davids.

Jerry Freeze has been the General Manager of the team since 2009. According to Freeze, Bob Jenkins, a multi-store Taco Bell franchisee, is the team owner.

“Jenkins first got involved in team ownership as part of the Jimmy Means team, which was known as Means-Jenkins Motorsports. Means is a long time NASCAR competitor,” said Freeze. “The team was active for one year and then Jenkins separated and founded Front Row Motorsports.”

It was basically a part time endeavor that competed in the Nationwide and Cup Series. In 2008, it started racing full time.

“We were initially part time because of finances,” explained Freeze. “We wanted to get our legs underneath us and take the time we needed to build up our resources and budget so that we could race full time,” said Freeze.

By 2009, the team was focused on racing in the Cup Series full time. One of the first racers to sign with the team at this time was John Andretti.

“That’s when it really became a full time team and we really started to get major sponsors,” Freeze said.

“We’ve been a part of the Ford team since 2010. We joined Ford so that we could be a part of the Roush Yates Engine Program. Before then, we raced Chevrolets,” said Freeze.

The engines that power the cars of Front Row Motorsports are 358-cubic inch V8s. The team has 60 employees including two drivers – Landon Cassill drives the number 34 car and David Ragan pilots the number 38 car.

Born in Unadilla, Georgia on December 24, 1985, Ragan is married with two children and resides in Kannapolis, North Carolina. During his career so far he has:

Landon Cassill's #34 car is a part of the Front Row Motorsports team

• Two NASCAR Monster Energy Series wins

• 15 NASCAR Monster Energy Series Top 5s

• Two NASCAR Xfinity Series wins

• 17 NASCAR Xfinity Series Top 5s

• Six Pole Awards in NASCAR’s Top 3 Series

He first started racing when he was 11 years old when he raced the Bandolero Series in 1997. In those early years, his father, Ken Ragan, a former Winston Cup driver, guided him. He won two national championships within three years and then graduated up to full-size cars, maneuvering through the Goody’s Dash Series and Legends Pro-Division.

He began racing in NASCAR when he turned 18. His first races included the Camping World Truck and XFINITY Series as well as a limited ARCA schedule.

Jack Roush invited him to join the Roush Fenway Racing Team in 2007 and assigned him to drive the number 6 Ford in what is now called the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. He finished his first season as runner-up for Rookie of the Year in the Cup Series and won Rookie of the Year in the NASCAR XFINITY Series.

He won his first cup race in July 2011 at the Daytona International Speedway. He then moved on for his first stint with Front Row Motorsports in 2013 and was the upset winner at Talladega Super Speedway. Fellow teammate David Gilliland finished second. This was the first win for Front Row Motorsports.

In 2015 Ragan served as a “super sub” for Joe Gibbs Racing when he replaced Kyle Busch, who had been injured, and was assigned to drive the number 18 Toyota for the first part of the season. He also served as a sub for Michael Waltrip Racing replacing an ill Brian Vickers.

Front Row Motorsports driver David Ragan drives the #38 car in NASCAR Monster Energy Cup series

He returned to Front Row Motorsports after racing for BK Racing in 2016.

“The win at Talladega put Front Row on the map and helped us attract some major sponsors,” noted Freeze. Front Row would go on to achieve another upset win in August 2016 with Chris Buescher driving the #34 car at the time.

Ragan’s major sponsors include Camping World, Overton’s, Gander Mountain, and Shriners’ Hospitals for Children. He has been associated with the hospitals for many years and has served as the charity’s ambassador. Freeze added that the Shriners promote their hospitals through golf tournaments and through the College Football East-West Shrine game.

Landon Cassill was born on July 7, 1989 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and now resides in Charlotte, North Carolina with his wife Katie and two children.

He has achieved the following so far in his career.

• Four time state champion of the Newton Kart Klub

• Youngest winner ever in the ASA Late Model Series at the age of 16

• First driver ever to win both the Northern and Southern Divisions of ASALMS

• Four NSCS Championships at “Test Driver” for the #48 team from 2007-2010

• Finished fourth at Talladega in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series

• One career Xfinity Series Top 5

• 12 career Xfinity Series Top 10s

• One career Xfinity Series Pole

With his dad in the used car business, it was to no one’s surprise that Cassill was born to race. He started racing go-karts when he was 8 years old and gradually moved up to full size racecars while in high school. He not only raced, he also built his cars and then raced them. When he wrecked them, he fixed them.

As a professional racer, he has served with startup teams all the way to the very top teams in the sport. As the test driver for Hendricks Motorsports, he won four championship rings from 2007 through 2010. The experience was worth everything as he learned how a championship organization operates and the experience was instrumental in teaching him leadership abilities that has helped him and the teams he has raced for.

He has represented nationally known entities including the National Guard and GoDaddy and is a seasoned spokesperson in the corporate world.

Freeze noted that Cassill’s main sponsors include Loves Travel Stops and CSX, a railroad freight company that promotes the Play It Safe Program, a project advocating safety around railroad tracks.

According to Freeze, selecting drivers requires a careful balance of racing skills and people skills.

“You want someone who has skills on the racetrack, but you also want them to be a good partner with the sponsors,” he said. “There are drivers with a lot of talent, but don’t have the personality fit. Sometimes you have to make compromises. In our case, we are very fortunate to have two drivers that understand the business outside the racecar quite well and they know what their responsibilities are. You don’t have to ask them to do anything. They go the extra mile without being asked.

“Landon and David have different ways of going about it,” continued Freeze. “David is an everyman kind of person who is interested in causes and outdoor life. He follows the sports teams from the Atlanta area. Atlanta is more cosmopolitan, so he likes big cities like Los Angeles and New York.

“Landon, on the other hand, is an Iowa boy who has a cosmopolitan style and a social media savvy unlike any other driver in NASCAR. He can talk about trends in the fashion industry or the latest Silicon Valley creation as easily as talking about springs and shocks,” continued Freeze.

Front Row Motorsports permits its drivers to race on their own.

“Landon is doing it next weekend. There’s a race in Iowa, his home state, that he wants to compete in. So we’re letting him. Our only concern is that he races a Ford. However, we don’t do that a whole lot,” said Freeze.

When asked if managing a racing team is like head coaching an NFL team or more of a business, Freeze answered, “It’s a lot like an NFL team. We have spots on the roster that have to be filled. If, say, a tire changer is not performing, as he should, we may put in a backup.

“But it’s also like a business,” he continued. “There are limits to what we can do to stay within boundaries due to budget. Our budget is not like that of the top tier teams like Joe Gibbs Racing. So we have to figure out ways to outrun them on the racetrack. Sometimes we do it and sometimes we don’t.”

Cars are disassembled and then reassembled during the 6 weeks of preparation.

The car is disassembled so that all parts can be maintained, repaired, or replaced and reassembled

Freeze noted that Front Row Motorsports has 18 people on its crews. There is a crew team for car no. 34 and another team for car no. 38.

“Each crew has a crew chief, mechanic, a guy to take care of the tires, a driver of the truck that transports the racecar, etc.,” explained Freeze. Donnie Wingo is the crew chief for car no. 34 and Derrick Finley is the crew chief for car no. 38.”

Front Row Motorsports owns 12 cars per team that are rotated through the racing schedule. The group includes special cars that are designed for specific tracks like Daytona and Talladega. Most of the cars are known as “down force cars,” which are raced on “down force tracks.”

It takes Front Row six weeks to prepare a car for a race. A shop foreman confers with the driver and crew chief to schedule the car for its next race when it returns to the shop. Then the work begins.

“For example, our next race is in Michigan this weekend,” explained Freeze. “Preparation of that car began six weeks ago. Generally, after a race a car will have some kind of body damage. This is repaired. In addition, the car is disassembled and parts from the car are shipped out to the appropriate department for maintenance. Suspension components go to the suspension room, engine parts go to the engine shop, fuel components go to the fuel cell guy, etc.

Each department keeps mileage logs for each part.

“We set a mileage limit for each part. When that has lapsed, we replace it. So we have to have an extensive inventory on hand of every part of the car,” said Freeze.

After maintenance, repair, or replacement, all parts are collected together for reassembly.

By race week the car is assembled and members of the crew and the driver start doing pre-set up.

“They come up with a final starting package they may want to try or make some other modifications and tweaks. In addition, modifications are made so that the car will race low on the track,” said Freeze.

The Wednesday before the race the car is ready. It is loaded on a truck and off it goes to the race site. The truck arrives at the track by Friday.

Freeze noted that the off-season may be the busiest time for the workers at the shop.

“The racing season is our calmest part of the year because there is a routine,” said Freeze. “The off-season is busy because we are preparing for next year.”

Freeze noted that building cars that will be raced next year begins in November.

“So we need to come up with our plan for next year by the first of November,” he said. “The plan includes how many cars we’re going to build, whether or not to cut the front ends, whether or not to cut the rear ends and more.”

The Front Row Motorsports shop has 6 weeks to prepare a racecar for its next race

The off-season for NASCAR racing lasts for 12 weeks. So a plan for the following year must be created and executed within that timeframe.
