DIY Cycle Parts' Custom Virago graced the NY IMS

A 750cc Yamaha Virago is certainly not the typical donor bike for a custom build. That honor is typically reserved for large displacement American V-twins, exotic Euro mounts, or vintage Japanese inline 4 models. As atypical as a custom Virago may be, “Crème Brûlée” proves that any motorcycle has the potential for show-quality greatness. As you’ll see, that was one of the goals of its talented builders.

The bike, built by Thomas Foulds and his partners at DIY Cycle Parts in Yardley, Pennsylvania, won the K&N Top Performer Award at the New York stop of the Progressive International Motorcycle Show (IMS). K&N is proud to sponsor three classes of the J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show in each city that IMS visits.

We had a chat with Foulds about his background, about Crème Brûlée, and how the stunning build came to be. Here is what he had to say.

K&N: What was the inspiration for the build?

Thomas Foulds: My inspiration for this bike was my own struggles with finding reliable, good quality bikes that the everyday person can afford. When I started building this bike, I set out to build a bike that was practical and enjoyable for the everyday ride, but still retained the look and style for a full custom café racer style bike. It was important that I reach this vision without sacrificing the cost or reliability of the bike.

K&N: What are its coolest features?

TF: One of the features that I like the most as a builder is the completely hung motor. It has no front or rear frame supports to hold the motor. The motor is used as part of the frame itself. I also really like the wheel and motor plexi inserts that were hand made for the bike, the newly modified frame that allows for the leaf spring seat, and the fully exposed mono shock.

K&N: What is your building background?

TF: There are three people that work in the shop, Steve Campbell, John Creely, and myself. Steve and I have been working together on motorcycles for the past 14 years, originally on small, personal projects, but more recently on entire bikes that we sell. Aside from working on motorcycles, I have also been an aircraft mechanic with the Air Force for the last decade.

K&N: What are your plans for future builds?

TF: Funny you should ask that. As of right now we are planning an in-house biker build-off that will consist of three bikes, one for each of us. The bikes are all similar in size and style. We’ll use a 1981 CB 1100, 1980 GS 1100, and we’re still looking for a Yamaha or a Kawasaki 1100 to finish off the third. We will all have the same budget and time to finish the bike; the design is all up to us. We hope that each bike will showcase our individual personalities and we will let the public decide who is best.

K&N: Anything else you want to add?

TF: I would like to say that this is a veteran owned and operated business that is committed to building custom bikes and parts that the average working person can afford.

El amor por las motocicletas de John Calicchio y su obsesión con las motocicletas Triumph se remonta a sus años académicos en el Sur de California. “Un día, en el año 1965, de camino hacía la escuela secundaria, vi a un sujeto bajar volando por Fairview Road haciendo una acrobacia (wheelie) con una motocicleta Triumph 650 Bonneville,” dice Calicchio. “No hay nada más sensacional que ver a alguien hacer rotar una motocicleta en un ángulo de 45 grados con una aceleración uniforme. Así ocurrió; el bichito de la motocicleta me picó tremendamente.” Aquella picadura de insecto se esparció por la corriente sanguínea de Calicchio manifestándose años más tarde con Triumph Classic Motorcycles su compañía con base en California.

Obviamente, existe más de historia de fondo anterior a la fundación de su compañía Triumph Classic Motorcycles. Los primeros años en el deporte Calicchio los pasó arrancando motocicletas de los sesenta y principios de los setenta. Él fue también un activo TT y corredor de pistas llanas.

K&N Air Intake is the Performance Answer for a Range of Harley® FL and FX Models

The K&N 57-1125P Intake

The 57-1125P kit includes everything that is needed for substantial power gains

If you ride a Harley-Davidson® FL or FX model, it’s time to take a serious look at the K&N 57-1125P performance intake. This intake fits a wide range of models from 2001 through 2015. It unlocks the hidden horsepower and torque in a host of 88, 96, and 103 cubic inch Harley® V-twin engines. It does all of this in a package that exudes style in every aspect of its design.

Let’s take a closer look at the kind of performance you can expect after the usual 90 minutes or less that it takes to install the 57-1125P. Bolted on the 88CI engine of an otherwise stock 2006 Softail, the K&N dynamometer showed an estimated horsepower increase of well over 7.5 horsepower. The dyno also revealed a very consistent torque increase across the RPM range with an estimated peak increase of over 8 foot-pounds.

In a stock 2009 Softail with the 96CI power-plant, the K&N dyno results were equally impressive. The chart shows an estimated increase of over 10 horsepower and almost 11 foot-pounds of torque with the 57-1125P. Those numbers add up to a much more exciting and satisfying ride on your Harley. Of course, power increases vary by bike, condition, and application, but K&N is so confident in our product that we guarantee a performance gain when using the 57-1125P.

As impressive as the power numbers are with the 57-1125P, that is only part of the story. The intake is built to last with its billet aluminum throttle-body mounting plate and high-quality intake tube. Those same aluminum bits are sure to enhance the looks of your Harley. The intake is finished off with a high-quality K&N filter with its layers of cotton gauze filter media. That oiled media offers up high airflow and effective filtration.

Dave "Sideways" Sieders Wins Last Australian V8 Ute Series in Final Race At Sydney Olympic Park

Even though the Utes are designed for light off road, teams can reinforce the suspension

With the brief exception of the El Camino and Ford Ranchero of the 1960s and 1970s, Americans have never really embraced the concept of a coupe front half, and a smaller open truck bed for the back half. There’s actually a term in the automotive industry to describe these vehicles: Coupe Utility.

One place that’s long accepted the Coupe Utility concept is Australia, where they’re referred to as Utes. And while some Utes Down Under are used to drive from Sheep Stations (ranches) into town, Utes with big V8s have also been tearing up the streets of Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, and every town in-between for decades.

So popular has the high-performance Ute category become, they have their own racing series starting in 2001. Run in conjunction with the Australian V8 Supercar Series, the V8 Utes race in eight events over the course of the season, including the world-famous Mount Panorama Circuit at Bathurst. Each round is based on a three race format with race two formatted as a reverse grid which can vary depending on the number drawn from a ballot. Race three’s grid is determined by the finishing positions from race one and two.

32 Utes start each race, 16 from Ford and 16 from GM's brand "down under" Holden, all V8 powered

Engines used in the series are the 5.0 L V8s in Fords and the GM 5.7 L V8s in the Holden Utes. Engines are maintained by an approved supplier and various components of the engine are sealed to make certain parts have not been changed. Modifications to the suspension, chassis, or really any other part of the Ute are strictly limited. All V8 Utes utilize K&N oil and air filters as part of a series sponsorship.

Which takes us to K&N Filters-supported driver Dave "Sideways" Sieders (each driver is assigned a nickname by the series to be more fan friendly). Sieders set new Australian V8 Ute Racing Series qualifying and race lap records on his way to winning the 2016 Australian Ute Championship at the Sydney Olympic circuit in his Mango Credit Holden, the last time the controversial street circuit will be used for auto racing.

While setting the qualifying lap record at the Sydney street circuit by eight-tenths of a second in the first round of qualifying, Sieders didn't make the rest of qualifying easy on himself. He flew down an escape road in the V8 Utes' top ten session on his first flying lap, but managed to cross the line for a second lap locking in his time from the first session and in doing so capturing his 19th career pole position.

"I like to add a bit of excitement by leaving my run to the last minute," joked Sieders, "this is the last time we'll get to race around here, and today we set a qualifying benchmark that can't ever be taken away".

By that Sieders means that the Utes that Ford and GM (Holden) have been building in Australia for decades have been discontinued, so it’s the end of the line for the V8 Ute Series. In its place will be a series for mid-sized four-door pickups (like the Chevy Colorado) named SuperUtes and powered by diesel engines.

Sieders entered the V8 Ute Series in 2010, taking the first of his 19 pole positions on his inaugural weekend. He became a regular in the series, finishing second in the championship three times and taking one third. His tally is 28 race wins and 14 qualifying round wins. He changed makes from Ford to Holden before he finally clinched the 2016 Australian V8 Ute Racing Championship in race two at the final race weekend of the season (and the series) at Sydney Olympic Park Street Circuit. Sieders also broke Ford's streak of four consecutive championships, giving the last title to Holden (GM).

A championship driver needs a championship crew, and here are the brains and brawn of the team

"It's definitely been a lot of hard work to finally win this title," said Sieders, "We've always gone out with the goal of winning races, and being the fastest car on track, and this year it finally all went together".

"It's taken so much to get here, I just don't think it has really sunk in yet," said Sieders, "it's amazing to think of everything we have achieved, the frustrations and the celebrations, it really has been a great journey".
