There are tons of insanely cool custom vehicles at the 2016 SEMA show

Day 2 of the SEMA show is just about in the books. Today, we will take you on a journey through Central Hall. This is probably the main hall at the show. The major OEMs are here, along with racing and performance companies, Hot Rod Alley, and a ton more.

K&N’s booth is located in the racing and performance section and we have a few really cool vehicles including a pro-touring 1961 Oldsmobile F-85 and a pair of custom motorcycles; an Indian Scout from Roland Sands Designs and a custom Harley-Davidson Sportster from Fuller Moto. But that’s enough talk. Check out the coverage and come back tomorrow for the truck, SUV, and off-road coverage.

SEMA 2016 is here and Las Vegas is teeming with prime examples from just about every segment of the automotive industry. If you aren’t familiar with this event, it is an annual automotive aftermarket event put on by the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA). It is essentially an expo for aftermarket companies to showcase their product to the rest of the automotive industry.

It is held at the Las Vegas Convention Center and features everything from big, lifted, off-road ready trucks to slammed imports tucking rubber, classic American muscle to the best that Europe has to offer and everything in between. We are going to kick off our coverage of the 2016 SEMA show with a combination of North Hall and the area outside of the halls. North hall consists of mainly automotive electronics and accessories as well as tools and equipment, while outside is mostly feature vehicles from different companies. We hope you enjoy the coverage and be sure to check back each day for more coverage of SEMA 2016!

Master Tuner and Former K&N Employee Dennis Mahan Inducted into AMA Hall of Fame

While Dennis worked for K&N, he took part in many powersports related trade shows and events

Dennis Mahan, the renowned motorcycle tuner and former powersports employee for K&N, has been inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame. The award is the pinnacle of recognition in the motorcycle world and denotes a lifetime of achievement in the sport.

The cast of famous riders for whom Mahan was a master performance tuner reads like a “who’s who” among racing champions. Motorcycles tuned by Mahan have won championships and set records in dirt track, road race, motocross, and land-speed over the decades of his illustrious career. He cut his racing teeth in the pits of the dirt oval where he tuned flat track bikes. AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Gary Nixon rode a Mahan-tuned BSA Gold Star to his first professional victory in 1961. Starting in the late 1960s, Mahan was the mechanical mastermind behind Yamaha’s factory team efforts in dirt track, road race, motocross, and snowmobiling.

Former Yamaha factory racer and current Simi Valley Mayor Pro-Tem, Keith Mashburn found out firsthand about Mahan’s fair but firm command of the Yamaha racing team. “I met Dennis early in 1968 when Yamaha decided to sponsor me in my novice year in flat track,” Mashburn said, “The day I met Dennis I went down to Yamaha, saw the bike he had built and met him at the same time. I looked at the bike and was very happy with what I saw. I did tell Dennis that I wanted a pillion pad added to the rear fender of the bike. Dennis advised me that ‘whoever’ rides this bike won’t be using a pillion pad. I thought ‘crap,’ I’m the contracted rider and he will do what I ask for. It was a very short conversation and quickly I learned I would be following his directions.” Mashburn was a quick study and found how beneficial Mahan’s mentorship would be. “The first race night at Ascot, I realized I didn’t have just a builder/tuner, I had a coach that was going to make me a success if I would listen. Dennis and I won more races in 1968 than anyone could have imagined.”

Mahan’s reputation and success continued to expand in the 1970s. In a true trifecta of speed and dominance, Mahan’s bikes swept the 1974 AMA 250cc National Motocross Championship piloted by AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famers Gary Jones, Marty Tripes, and Jimmy Ellis. In 1977, Mahan migrated to Kawasaki Motors USA. In his new position, he was integral to the professional growth and development of AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame legend Wayne Rainey. Mahan also built factory Kawasaki dirt-trackers for future AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Eddie Lawson. His influence continued into the 1980s with his work in the development of the KZ1000 Eddie Lawson Replica street bike.

Mahan’s legacy of achieving success with so many iconic racers is legendary, and it did not happen by mere chance. In a Hog Radio interview, Mahan made it clear that a personal connection and trust is vital to the tuner/racer relationship. “You are not going to be a winner with just a rider or a winner with just a tuner. The tuner and the rider have to be close…off and on the racetrack.” He continued that many of those relationships are ongoing in his life. “I was with Wayne Rainey,” Mahan said, “Wayne and I are still friends today. He and I talk on the computer. I still go to races that Wayne is involved in. If you don’t have that personal contact, that personal friendship, generally that team is not going to be successful.”

Speaking of powerful relationships, Mahan’s masterful fingerprints are all over the development of many K&N performance products. His nearly three decades of work with K&N includes such notable accomplishments as the development of the RK-series intake systems as well as powersports oil filters. Mahan made it clear that his corporate relationships have been nearly as important to him as those that he developed with racers. He said at the Hall of Fame podium, “I’ve been fortunate in my 58 years of motorcycling to work with some really great companies. Without their support, I wouldn’t be here today. This is the culmination of a great career, and I can’t thank everyone enough.”

K&N is honored to have been a part of Dennis Mahan’s life work. Congratulations Dennis on your AMA Hall of Fame induction. We can think of no one more worthy. Thank you for your invaluable contributions to K&N, and to motorcycling as a whole.

In the 1890s, bicycle racing was all the rage. The more 'inventive' cyclists started fitting their bikes with crude internal combustion engines, in the vain attempt to gain a little more speed. Most of these early "motorized bicycles" proved quite unreliable, but the idea still managed to catch on. By the turn of the century, many leading bicycle manufacturers were making variations of the motor bike, which inspired two guys named William Harley and Arthur Davidson to build one of their own. Their first motorcycle was completed in 1903, and it featured a 3-hp engine with a leather belt driving the rear wheel. The top speed was around 45-50 mph, but you can bet that was a harrowing experience. Fast forward a century, and your 2008-2011 Harley Davidson Twin Cam 96 V-Twin, 2009-2014 Harley Davidson Twin Cam 103 V-Twin, and 2008 Harley Davidson Twin Cam 110 can manage that speed without breaking a sweat. But if you want your modern Hawg to get up there even faster, then you're going to need a K&N 57-1122P performance intake.

The Harley V-Twin in your bike, makes power just like the first Harley did back in 1903: gas mixes with air inside the cylinders, then a spark plug triggers the detonation. If you add more oxygen to the mix, the explosion will be a lot stronger, which will send more energy (horsepower/torque) through the crankshaft and out to the back wheel. To increase the oxygen level, you need to get more cold air into the engine. The stock Harley intake utilizes a thick paper air filter, hidden behind a decorative chrome cover. The heart of the K&N 57-1122P performance intake system is the oversized K&N performance air filter. It's made from multiple layers of cotton gauze and treated with a special red oil that causes the web of cotton fibers to become sticky and attract dirt. Airborne contaminants then stay trapped inside the filter where they can't impede airflow (depending on road conditions, the filter won't need to be cleaned for up to 100,000 miles). The additional air collected by the filter then gets sent directly to the motor through a mandrel-bent aluminum intake tube. This polished K&N intake tube not only looks great, but it helps the cold air to maintain velocity as it reaches the cylinders.

Cycle Trader/Rock River Yamaha Riders Have Best Season Yet, Look Forward to 2017

Mike DuClos, the owner of Johnson Creek, Wisconsin’s Rock River Power Sports, saw a problem in 2009. A rider he supported as an amateur was turning pro and could not find the support he needed. DuClos quickly formed the Rock River Pro Racing Team. He saw it as a way to help riders move into the professional ranks with the support they need. Yamaha stepped in and began supporting the program the following year. In 2013, Cycle Trader stepped in as title sponsor, in an effort that saw the team not only grow financially, but where it mattered most – results.

Cycle Trader/Rock River Yamaha has played a part in shaping the careers of riders careers like Weston Peick, Aaron Plessinger, Chase Sexton, Sebastian Tortelli, Alex Martin, Ben Lamay, Malcolm Stewart, Christina Craig, Colt Nichols, Vince Friese, Robbie Reynard, Bradley Taft, Tommy Hahn, Michael Byrne, Benny Bloss, Luke Renzland, Cole Martinez, and Lorenzo Locrucio to name a few, DuClos said.

Part of being professional is interacting with the fans.

Looking back at the 2016 season, it was another great year DuClos said.

“In Supercross, Colt Nichols put us up on the box numerous times, and Luke Renzland made his way to the front of the pack for us this outdoor season. All in all, the team is moving in a positive direction and that is all I can ask for.”

DuClos added that like most teams, they are always striving to improve. The team thrives on taking what they have learned and sharing with those coming through the ranks to build the next winner. With a proven track record in recent years, the formula will always change, always look for the next level, and the team will continue to build on their already proven platform, he said.

With 2016 winding down, it is time compete in the final few events of the year and prepare for the 2017 season. For 2017, the team has two rookies coming on board in Bradley Taft and Lorenzo Locrucio. Those two will be mentored by returning captain Tommy Hahn. DuClos expects amazing things out of the team.

“Taft has already proven that he can run in the top ten outdoors, and Locrucio is amazing on a

Supercross track, so watch out,” he said.

It used to be that there was a defined “off-season” that began after the last outdoor national, but that isn’t the case anymore. DuClos said that before the team finished the last outdoor race they were already testing Supercross bikes and preparing for the 2017 season. This past weekend’s Monster Energy Cup event was the last competitive event where the team was really looking at how their setup is for Supercross the next season.

“The guys all live out at our facility in California to be close to the Yamaha test track, and click off laps making changes along the way to hit it hard at Anaheim One,” he said.

From the riders, to the sponsors and all of our crew. This has been an amazing journey for myself and Rock River Power Sports and it has just begun.”

Rock River is, and always has been devoted to the amateur program, DuClos said. He sees the program as a stepping stone, and is happy with that. He wants the riders he supports to succeed under the team tent, under the team’s direction, and land a career in the industry however they choose.

“Never forget your roots; never forget who helped your success,” DuClos said. “Thank you to everyone who has helped mine.”
