NASCAR Nationwide Series Hosts K&N FIlters Chevrolet at Auto Club Speedway

Jason Keller and CJM Racing hoped to give K&N Filters something to celebrate at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. The team battled back from a mediocre qualifying run and drove the K&N Filters car to a solid finish. Keller has gained ground in series points and now sits 27 points outside of 10th place in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

Labor Day in Southern California is usually very hot and Keller had to concentrate on the weather and the importance of track position. Since Mother Nature controls the temperature, CJM Racing worked to control the handling of the No. 11 K&N Chevrolet.

Under the hot sun Friday afternoon, 43 cars had two practice sessions in preparation for Saturday evening’s 300-mile race. The K&N Chevrolet struggled to find a correct balance on the track and posted a 42.789 second lap, 168.269 mph in the first practice. That was later followed with a 42.562 second run, 169.165 mph. That placed the No. 11 27th on the board with no mock qualifying run.

Practice sessions were held during the heat of the day and the race took place at night with cooler temperatures. “The weather conditions during the race are going to be significantly different than what we experienced during practice,” said Crew Chief Todd Gordon. “These cars react differently depending on the weather and the handling also varies.”

As the green flag waved, the No. 11 K&N Chevrolet moved up 11 positions in 25 laps. The handling woes continued as the teams began to cycle through for green flag pit

stops. Gordon called Keller to pit road on lap 42 for the first of four pit stops. The K&N Chevrolet received four fresh tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment. When the team rejoined the field they realized race leader Kyle Busch blazed by the field during the pit stops. As a result, the No. 11 found itself one lap down.

The front end of the No. 11 had a difficult time turning and a lack of rear grip was making the car a hand full. Keller went back to pit road on lap 58 for four new tires, fuel and another air pressure adjustment. The K&N Chevrolet averaged a 17th place running position for the remainder of the event.

Keller’s determination throughout the race paid off and he was the recipient of the Lucky Dog award. As a result he restarted at the tail-end of the longest line on lap 142. The eight-lap shoot out caused aggressive driving but Keller avoided any trouble. The K&N Chevrolet finished out the race in the 14th position. This was the second week in a row the team took a top-15 finish.

The NASCAR Nationwide Series heads to Richmond, Virginia for its next race. The Emerson Radio 250 will be Friday, September 5 and will air live on ESPN2 at 7:30 pm EST.

The 57A-6010 uses the K&N Apollo, a shell which houses a K&N high-flow air filter. The Apollo comes with attachments for the Renault which allow cool outside air to be fed into the unit. K&N’s UK facility conducted bench air flow testing and power gains have been consistent under most driving conditions with the Apollo. Rolling road tests also show positive power gains.

K&N air intake systems are designed to free vehicles from much of the restriction caused by the original air intake system. Simply replace the factory airbox to allow less restricted air to the engine for added power and performance. Instructions are included with each kit in several different languages. K&N air intake kits are easy to assemble, usually in 90 minutes or less and come with the famous K&N Million Mile Limited Warranty.

X Games Gold for Team Faith YZF 250 Yamaha Motocross Speed and Style Rider

Kevin Johnson proved he was most qualified for the Speed and Style event at X Games 14 by taking home X Games Gold. The Team Faith YZF 250 Yamaha rider has been diligently working on his back flip since the very first Speed and Style event at the Moto X World Championship games.

“I must have done 200 flips into foam pits trying to get comfortable doing flips on dirt,” said Johnson. “But I never really got comfortable. I did land a back flip to dirt, but I also crashed.” The Speed and Style competition is played out just like its name. Racers try to best each other on speed and judges are on hand to determine who has the best form when it comes to flips and jumps.

In practice Johnson looked good on the hard packed track. His Yamaha was a little underpowered when it came to what the others were riding, but it worked well when it came to the technical and timing aspect of the event.

In the Semi-Finals Johnson was paired against Jeremy Stenberg. He gave Johnson a run for his money until the second lap. Stenberg wowed the crowd with flip tricks while Johnson wowed the crowd and judges with bigger tricks. It was enough to advance Johnson to the Finals and a face off against one of the world’s best freestyle motocross riders, Ronnie Renner.

“Ronnie beat me on the start but I passed him on the first lap,” said Johnson. “Our style tricks were about the same, but I beat him by about four seconds. Those four seconds made the difference and I took the gold.”

Johnson uses K&N replacement air filter  YA-2506XD and K&N oil filter  KN-141 at all of his races. “K&N always gives me the air flow I need,” he said. “With free style I have a trick called the hand grab and K&N allows me to have more power and more throttle response.”

Johnson said he did not expect to get the X Games Gold. “I was really surprised,” he said. “I never expected to do that well. Everything just happened to go my way the day of the event.”  Maybe 200 back flips into foam pits also helped Johnson find his way to the gold.
