Number 78 Wingless Sprint driven by Mickey Kempgen
A happy, loose, race team is usually one that's winning. "We have put together one heck of a combination of cars, product sponsors, money sponsors, and the mind-set to go out this year and have fun," says Shane Miller. Shane and his wife Kim own Miller Motorsports.
20 year veteran Tommy Nichols with the number 55 Sprint car
The team currently runs with three drivers, 20 year veteran driver number 55 Tommy Nichols ('03 Central Florida Wingless Sprint Champion), a seasoned driver; number 78 Mickey Kempgen (Fast Truck Champion) and rookie; Dustin Perez ('08 Desoto Speedway Mini Stock Champion). There's a good amount of friendly competition between the three drivers, which helps to keep the mood relaxed, at the same time continually lifting the bar higher for all.
The season started out rocky for the team with the number 55 and 70 cars experiencing engine issues. The 78 car however, driven by Mickey Kempgens, remained pretty consistent throughout the entire season, reaching top ten finishes in 95 percent of the races entered, including several heat wins. And, in the last four consecutive races, the number 78 car finished in the top five. Presently though the 55 car, driven by Tommy Nichols, has put together an impressive late season run, with Feature and Qualifying heat wins.

The win at the latest event held at Citrus County Speedway means a lot to Nichols and to the entire Miller Motorsports team. Tommy and his Dad (Dennis Nichols) have been racing together for more than 30 years, starting in Kart racing and this win was a career first for them - winning the Qualifying Heat Race and the Feature in the same night. Their winning night was a first for Miller Motorsports as well. "Hard work by the entire team paid off with a big win for all," adds Shane. Tommy has been a life long friend of Shane and Kim and he says he feels honored to be a part of their team.
All three cars utilize the K&N fuel injection style air box for Sprint Car systems and all three use K&N oil filters. Along with the filters, the team swears by the cleaning sprays, oils, and pre-filters as well. Not only does the team utilize filters for the Sprinters, the haulers have K&N filters throughout too.
"Last year we only had one car on the track and it wasn't running a K&N air filter, when that motor was rebuilt for this year, there was pitting in the intake ports. This year we don't have that problem due to the K&N filters," informs Miller.
How does Miller Motorsports intend to build on this stellar year and what plans do they have for the future? "Our plan is to continue to get all three cars in the top ten. Hopefully we can finish out the season with another win or two. As far as next year goes our goal is to win a championship with the Tampa Bay Area Racing Association (TBARA), and quite possibly have a second and third place points finish as well. We also plan on attending as many non-wing races as possible. We have learned a lot this year and look forward to putting that knowledge to good use next season. We are starting to get recognition as a very competitive team, as well as for having a good time doing it," concludes Miller.
Ford Racing Mustang Challenge Champion Andrew Caddell sealed his second consecutive victory in the series at Miller Motorsports Park near Salt Lake City, Utah. It was a racing dream come true for the 21-year-old from Graham, Washington.

“We had to work hard for the championship this year,” said Caddell. “We won the first race of the year in Homestead, Miami and struggled after that.”
2008 and 2009 Ford Racing Mustang Challenge Series Champion Andrew Caddell
The turning point for Caddell came after the 45th Anniversary of the Mustang event at Barber Motorsports Park. “We changed the motor and the rest of the season was great,” he said. “We won in New Jersey, finished second at Laguna Seca and picked up a total of four race wins for the season. Things just kept getting better.”
Caddell’s Ford Mustang uses the Ford Mustang FR500s as a competition platform for the series. It is equipped with a 4.6 liter V8 engine and K&N products. “I’ve been using K&N since I was 9-years-old in Go Karts,” he said. “I have a lifetime of racing with K&N and I don’t remember racing without K&N products. K&N filters give me a competitive edge.”
The 45-minute race at Miller Motorsports Park was intense. Caddell established his lead and held off the advances of his competition to take the checkered flag. “We just wanted to go out there and go out on top,” he said. “We just wanted to win. You can never let your guard down when you’re trying to win a championship.”
In the off season, Caddell will be working with a personal trainer. “It’s important to have that mind-body connection feeling,” said Caddell. “Mental
toughness is an important part of racing. If you don't have it you are not going
to be as good as you need to be to win.”
Caddel is hoping to race again in 2010. “Next year is still up in the air,” he said. “It would also be great to run in the Grand Am KONI GS Series and run a Mustang there.
The Kawasaki ZX6R Ninja is essentially a race machine made street legal by adding a license plate and turn signals. For 2007 the ZX6R Ninja was completely redesigned for the first time in 10 years. Technology born on the racetrack has filtered down to Kawasaki’s line of sportbikes.
K&N Race Specific Air Filter KA-6007R for 2007-2008 Kawasaki ZX6R Ninja Motorcycles

Changes include an all-new 599 cc 16-valve liquid-cooled inline four-cylinder engine, a new chassis, and new fully adjustable suspension. The result is reduced weight, more centralized mass, and excellent handling, which makes the Kawasaki ZX6R a potent race-ready street machine.
Here to help the ZX6R stand out from the on-track competition is K&N’s new race specific air filter (KA-6007R) designed to increase performance in 2007-2008 Kawasaki ZX6R Ninja models.
K&N’s race specific air filter part number KA-6007R is very different from its stock replacement air filter counter part (KA-6007). KA-6007R incorporates two-ply cotton media in a special pleat pattern to be less restrictive, providing extra airflow. As a result this K&N racing air filter increases horsepower and acceleration for the racetrack.
K&N air filters are washable and reusable. K&N part number KA-6007R will fit directly inside your OE air box assembly. No cutting or fitting modifications are required to install this filter, but fuel management modifications will be necessary to obtain optimum performance.
K&N’s KA-6007R is warranted against defective workmanship for one year after the date of purchase with no mileage limitation. This K&N air filter is designed for asphalt racing only. It is not intended for dirt track, off-road or highway use.
For 2007-2008 ZX6R motorcycles used in normal non-racing environments, K&N recommends its four layer OE replacement air filter, part number KA-6007 for excellent engine protection and air flow.
K&N also offers a line of performance oil filters for use on and off the racetrack. Our canister style oil filters feature high flow rates, a heavy-duty canister, high burst strength and a 17mm wrench-off nut that is pre-drilled for safety wire attachment. K&N oil filters are ideal for race applications, hard to reach oil filters, high-performance engines, and use with synthetic oils. This makes the 2007-2008 ZX6R Ninja an ideal candidate for part number KN-303.
David Lewien takes a picture in front of his number 3 Chevrolet
"I've been going full-throttle since the day I learned to walk - according to my mother," explains David Lewien. David and his wife Patricia own and operate Blue Moon Motorsports, an asphalt short track stock car program, located in Blanco, Texas, and as Lewien is apt to point out, that's only 35 miles north of San Antonio.

Lewien's roots run deep and wide into old school, southern, racing traditions. His earliest recollections lead back to the neighborhood, racing anything that would roll with the other kids, Big Wheels, tricycles, bicycles - "our dad's riding-lawnmowers."
"Saturdays, after chores. We'd mark out a track using bricks and tree limbs on the parking lot of my Dad's church where he was the Pastor. That came to an abrupt end when one of us fell off, and the tractor kept going though a stained glass church window," recalls Lewien.
Over the years the racing jones kept growing, leading Lewien to being licensed by NASCAR to race in the Craftsman Truck Series. However, financial reality soon set in and racing had to take a backseat to family and work. Still, the passion to race never died. In '08, with the support of his wife, Lewien returned to the track in the number 3 Chevrolet, running in the Texas Pro Truck Touring Series, and together they created Blue Moon Motorsports. Racing for only a partial season in that first year, Lewien still managed to finish a respectable ninth in the points.
Blue Moon Motorsports is third in points and only 32 points away from the top.
"I think that with the improvements we've shown this year, we are third in points, only 32 points out of first, we should see our first win next year, and a Championship within the next two years." Lewien is nothing if not energetic and positive at all times about racing.
Trucks were three wide at Houston Motorsports Park
They came out fired up this year and qualified second for the first race of the season. "We've qualified on the Pole three times this year, with three top five finishes and seven top tens. Our best finish of the year was fourth twice," adds Lewien.
Lewien is also resolutely enthusiastic about his relationship with K&N. "We use a K&N Flow Control Air Filter on the number 3 K&N Chevrolet and K&N High Flow Cold Air Intakes on all our company and personal vehicles. We also put a K&N High Flow Cold Air Intake on our Crew Chief's GMC 2500 and both our son's have them on their Mustang's. We also use the K&N Gold Oil Filters on ALL of our vehicles including the #3 K&N Chevrolet. 2009 has been a good year for the Blue Moon Motorsports Team, in spite of tough economic times.
Pole Position at Houston Motorsports Park
Lewien is by no means a single dimension racer, or person, for that matter. There's another passion he pursues with the same vigor as racing. At the end of last year they formed R.A.S.A.R. (Racers Against Substance Abuse Rally). R.A.S.A.R is a non-profit, faith based organization, whose goal is to use the excitement of racing along with the impact of a real race car to capture the attention of children and young adults in the Intermediate, Middle and High School age brackets.
"We have met with the local school district and they have agreed to let us do several R.A.S.A.R. presentations at various campuses throughout the school year. We plan to expand this to school districts statewide," beams Lewien.
The Lewiens have an interesting, highly visible, logo that was worth asking about.
"My wife and I were married under a Blue Moon. A blue moon being two full moons in one month, that only happens only once every couple of years, so it's special. The Pegasus part of the logo signifies the flight to follow your dreams. My wife had a poster with a Pegasus and the motto "Let your Dreams take flight". We thought that motto represented what we wanted to do in racing and with R.A.S.A.R."

World of Outlaws racer Jason Meyers is second in points standings, just behind Donny Schatz as he chases his first
championship title.
Jason Meyers and the Elite Racing Team are gaining momentum as they prepare for the World of Outlaw World Finals on The Dirt Track at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina
Tensions were high at Williams Grove Speedway for the National Open in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. “We were headed into the toughest
track that we raced on all year and faced the toughest competition,” said Meyers. “But we had some great runs at Williams Grove this year and we had a lot of momentum going into the race.”
Jason Meyers is currently second in points heading into his next event in Texas, just behind leader Donny Schatz as he chases his first World of Outlaws Championship title.
Schatz holds the most impressive record of all Word of Outlaw drivers at Williams Grove Speedway. Meyers did not let that deter him and continued to improve at the one-half mile semi-banked clay oval.
Meyers was fastest in the 2nd hot lap session on Saturday evening. During qualifying the track began to slow almost immediately. Meyers circled in 16.729 seconds to come in 13th, just one position behind Schatz.
Meyers lined up on the pole of the 1st heat and won a qualifying position in the Crane Cams Dash. The Elite Racing Team driver charged high in turns 1 and 2 to take 3rd place, where he eventually finished. This put Meyers in 3rd position for the 30 lap A Main.
Meyers lined up for the best starting position in his career at a National Open Main event. Pole sitter Greg Hodnett set a blistering pace at the start and Meyers slipped to 4th place. Meyers and Schatz moved around the race track looking for a way to get to the front. On lap 16 Meyers used a run off to move past Schatz and take 2nd position. Unfortunately a red flag flew before he
completed it and the pass was voided by officials.
On the restart Meyers slipped to 5th place. “I was struggling with a full fuel load,” he said. “It took me a few laps to get going.” As the laps wound down, Meyers moved back into 3rd position behind Schatz. Both closed in on the leader until the red flag flew again.
On the restart the top two points leaders in the World of Outlaws tried to find a way to the front. Meyers was close on the bumper of 2nd place
racer Schatz and tried to make another pass. Schatz however was looking for a way around Hodnett. As the three exited turn 4 for the last time, it was Hodnett for the win, Schatz in second and Meyers in third.
The 3rd place finish was Meyers’ career best at the National Open. He only lost two points in the overall point battle for the championship.
The Clovis, California native uses K&N oil filter part number,
HP-3002 and K&N sprint car air box, part number
100-8567. “K&N filters are absolutely the best and that is why you will find them in every application within our team,” said Meyers. “We work hard to make horsepower and our K&N air filter allows us to protect our motors from track debris in the worst conditions.”
Meyers and the Elite Racing Team will next head to Rolling Wheels Speedway in Elbridge, New York to continue their chase for the World of Outlaw Championship. Meyers remaining races include the October 24 event at Lonestar Speedway in Kilgore, Texas and then the two night World Finals event in Concord, North Carolina on November 6 and 7.
