Someone once wrote, "Riding motorcycles makes me contemplative. It's an addiction I don't seek to kick. I need it. It's how I regain my footing when the world around me tilts or my mojo starts to fade." It's safe to say that Shannon Moham living in Littleton, Colorado has enough mojo for entire room of people. It's also safe to say he finds motorcycles a life affirming, self-induced addiction.
Taking it to the edge on his Yamaha R6
"My love for motorcycles started at a very early age. I rode my first bike at eight years old, a 1980 YZ80, which I crashed through my neighbor's garage door on Christmas morning. I had many other bikes throughout the years, but it was after I crashed my (Honda) CBR900RR, that was a gift from my parents after graduating from the US Air Force Academy, that I decided it might be a bit safer to take my riding to the racetrack. Over the last several years I have competed both at the professional and club level," says Moham.
Moham's riding style has been described as equal parts aggression and flair. Racers and spectators alike take notice of his racing abilities and his consistent results wherever he races.
"My '09 season was challenging, to say the least, but ended successfully as I brought home three Class Championships and set four track records. As a racer that cherishes the support of my sponsors, I work very hard at building profitable relationships with those sponsors and strive to reach the podium weekend after weekend," says Moham.
"K&N provides awesome support and the best filter products on the market. Not only did the K&N motorcycle air filters keep my motors together under harsh race conditions, the air filter also provided that much needed horsepower, and the oil filters made tech a breeze, with the ability to run safety wire already built-in."
Winning Championships and setting track records last year are even more remarkable, put in context with the challenges Moham had to overcome. "The start of my race season began with a devastating trailer crash on I-70 that resulted in a totaled bike and tens of thousands of dollars in damage to bikes and gear. That crash prevented me from any further racing out in Utah, at Miller Motorsports Park, as the damage to my bikes was too extensive, and took time to rectify," reflects Moham.
"The birth of my beautiful firstborn, in the second month of racing, was an incredible experience and a wonderful addition to our life, for my wife and I, but it definitely threw a new twist into our race weekends. To top it all off, I had a major get off that included a fire, which I could have done without," quips Moham.
When all was said and done, '09 was a, memory-book type year for Moham, filled with exhilarating highs, and life defining challenges. "I am incredibly proud of my race results. I feel that they speak for my dedication, professionalism and abilities on a motorcycle. However, if I didn't have such wonderful sponsors, that provide incredible products for me to race with, I wouldn't be anywhere in the racing world," adds Moham.
"For 2010, I'm going to be racing a R6 and a SV650, and I fully expect to dominate on both," declares a confident Moham. "I'll be racing with both the MRA and Utah Sportsbike Association at Miller Motorsports Park, and a select few other races. I am excited to exceed last year's accomplishments and am looking forward to breaking some of my own records."
"Racing motorcycles is an incredible privilege that I have been allowed to be a part of. My racing effort is up-close and personal with the spectators, and with other riders. I have surrounded myself with a very professional team and I am looking forward to making 2010 the best year yet."
In 2010 Andrews' race schedule will consist of 50 races
When a racecar driver finds the "zone" and an entire teams' efforts align in one ideal season of synchronicity, its spectacularly sweet and rewarding. It becomes a personal highlight reel frozen in time. Sprint Car driver Chris Andrews from Sandusky, Ohio is coming off just that kind of race season, the kind of year that redefines a team's approach to new possibilities for the coming season.
The 2009 race season was the best season of Andrew's whole racing career
"This past '09 race season was by far the best season of my whole racing career," says Andrews. "One of the major highlights of the season was signing on with K&N as a primary sponsor early in the year. The timing of our success was perfect as we took K&N Filters to victory lane four times, three at Attica Raceway Park and one at Rocky Top Raceway in Coal Grove, Ohio and that in addition to a 410 Championship at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio. Numerous top fives and top 10's between Attica Raceway Park and Fremont Speedway, also earned us a fourth place position in the Fremont Attica Sprint Title."
"My relationship with K&N has been the best it can possibly be. We began working together back in '04, when I first hit the dirt sprint car scene. I was a 15-year-old freshman in high school at the time, calling sponsors for hours upon hours, each and every night after school hoping for that handful of sponsors to take the chance on me. It's very intriguing to take a step back from where we are now, to where we began, winning 410 Sprint Car races and Championships, at a way younger age than I ever expected. But nonetheless, I expect to win every time I hit the racetrack," reflects Andrews.
Andrews hopes to compete in the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series or NASCAR Camping World Truck Series in the future
Looking towards the future Andrews hopes to compete in the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, or possibly the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. "I look to grow my relationship with K&N Filters at the next level," adds Andrews.
"The K&N products we currently use are the Carbon Fiber Air Boxes, which consist of very light weight carbon fiber for weight reduction. K&N oil filters and Pre-Filters, which block out the major particles of dirt from entering our air filter, K&N air filter soap/cleaner, as well as K&N air filter oil. We depend solely on all K&N products."
Andrews' 2010 race schedule will consist of 50 races. For starters the Andrews Motorsport team will be running the full 24-race schedule for the Fremont Attica title. There are also numerous non-sanction races at Fremont Speedway, as well as Attica Raceway Park, that the team is planning to attend. "And finally we will be running 15 All-Star Circuit of Champions events on top of five World of Outlaw sanction events. My goal is to win 10 A-Mains this year," wraps up Andrews.
So often our greatest lessons and a renewed sense of enthusiasm spring forth from discontentment as is the case for Sprint Car racer Daniel Sheridan from Torrance, California.
Danny Sheridan is ready to win
"Last season was a little disappointing for us, we went into the season with high hopes for a championship, since we were coming off one of our best seasons to date ('08)," reflects Sheridan.
"The '09 season started well with a couple West Coast 360 victories and some podium finishes with the USAC/CRA series, but we couldn't get on top of the podium in that series. We had good cars, great sponsors, but luck was not on our side, it seemed as though wherever there were problems (accidents) on the track, we became a magnet to them. We are looking past the '09 season though, and we're excited to get under way in 2010, with hopes of chasing the USAC/CRA Championship, along with numerous West Coast 360 victories."
"During the off season we made numerous changes to our program that I feel will have big impacts going into 2010. We stepped back and looked where we were good and where we had room to improve and I think we have made the necessary changes to put ourselves in contention to win every time we hit the track," explains a motivated Sheridan.
"We have also made a few chassis modifications that I feel we needed to do, along with a few changes to our engine program. We went to a new engine builder at the end of the '09 season that the team has been very happy with."
"The relationship we have established with K&N has been tremendous," say Sheridan. "It's great to be able to show up at a track and represent such an outstanding company as K&N, their products have been around for so long and are very well respected in the motorsports industry. Currently we use K&N air box air filters, air filter oil, air filter cleaner, pre-chargers, crankcase filters and oil filters, all of which we are very pleased with."
For the coming season Sheridan says he has one single goal in mind - to win. "We want to show up at a track and whether it's a 360, or 410 Non-Wing Sprint Car race, we want everyone there to know that we are going to be the car to beat. I would like the USAC/CRA Championship, but winning wherever we run at is definitely the number one goal for me right now."
"I want to thank everyone at K&N for all that you do for me and motorsports in general, it's an honor to represent such a prestigious company."
NHRA announced today it has signed a contract extension with K&N Engineering, Inc., locking in the company’s sponsorship of the popular K&N Horsepower Challenge, a lucrative bonus event for Pro Stock competitors, through the 2012 event.
2010 K&N Horsepower Challenge
The K&N Horsepower Challenge is a special race-within-a-race bonus program for the top Pro Stock drivers in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series. The K&N Horsepower Challenge is contested during the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio. The race features a special elimination pairing with eight Pro Stock drivers in the field, including seven who accumulate the most points in qualifying during the 23-race Challenge series, and one driver who is selected to the starting lineup for the event via a special fan vote.
As part of the K&N Horsepower Challenge, K&N will conduct a fan promotion during the running of the series and will present a new Harley-Davidson motorcycle to a lucky fan during the finals of the K&N Horsepower Challenge. In the promotion, eight lucky fans will receive a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park for the event, where one fan will be selected as the winner of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Each finalist will be paired with a K&N Horsepower Challenge driver during pre-race ceremonies and will be introduced on stage with the driver.
"We are pleased to extend the sponsorship of this important bonus event for Pro Stock racers with our friends at K&N Engineering," said Gary Darcy, senior vice president of sales and marketing, NHRA. "The K&N Horsepower Challenge certainly brings an increased level of excitement to the NHRA Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals."
The winner of the K&N Horsepower Challenge will earn $50,000, and the runner-up will earn $10,000. The two semifinalists will earn $3,000 each, while the four first-round finishers will receive $2,500 each.
"K&N is committed to making the Horsepower Challenge the premier Pro Stock event at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park," said Steve Williams, vice president, K&N Engineering. "This year we are paring up eight lucky fans with the top eight drivers for a chance to win a Harley-Davidson Street Bob motorcycle, all they have to do is go to KNfilters.com, vote for their favorite driver and register to win."
The K&N Horsepower Challenge features an overall purse of $145,000. In addition to the $76,000 K&N Horsepower Challenge, K&N also will award $69,000 in qualifying bonuses to quick Pro Stock qualifiers throughout the K&N Horsepower Challenge series. Low qualifiers earn $3,000 at each of the 23 events in the Challenge series.
Last season Jeg Coughlin claimed his third title in the prestigious race-within-a-race bonus event. Other past winners of the K&N Horsepower Challenge include Greg Anderson, Dave Connolly, Kurt Johnson, Warren Johnson, Darrell Alderman, Larry Morgan, Jim Yates, Bruce Allen and Bob Glidden.
K&N Engineering has been a major NHRA contingency sponsor for many years and has been the title sponsor for several NHRA national events in the past.
K&N is located in Riverside, Calif., and has more than seven hundred employees. Its 400,000 square foot manufacturing and distribution facilities produce the world’s best air filters that are reusable. Besides creating the first reusable performance air filter, K&N also produces the Wrench-Off oil filter and complete replacement air intake systems, adding horsepower for most cars and trucks.
