With a weather shortened amount of qualifying sessions, Massel had already easily placed himself at the top of the sheet in Competition Eliminator during the very first of what would only be two sessions in his Autogeek.net/K&N 2008 Chevy Cobalt when he ran an enormous .726 under his DD/AT class index. Thanks to an uneven amount of entries, that number one spot netted Massel a bye in round one where he made smart pass under full power to only the thousand foot mark to get all the info he needed and not hurt his index for round two.

"It was a pretty big deal," noted Massel of the bye. "Conditions had changed a ton and it was at night so some people had lost some index to get out of that round. It was huge for us to start the weekend clean going into Sunday."

Bruno Massel put together quite an impressive weekend at his first NHRA National Event of the 2011 race season.

One would have never guessed that Massel entered the event with a brand new motor and not a drop of testing, let alone any time on a dyno. "There is so much that goes into these motors," he said of his turbo entry. "We made some tweaks over the winter and kinda took a shot on something and well, it paid off. It was really even a better outcome than I anticipated."

While Massel had enjoyed earning the first round bye, by doing so had aligned himself with a pretty tough list of customers on his side of the ladder and right off the bat on Sunday, he met up with Vinny Barone in round two. "He's a tough competitor all day long," he said of Barone. "He's just a total class act. I caught him early in the run and rather than him wearing me out and trying to hurt my index, he shut off and let us get by the round clean. A lot of guys won't do that for you, but we've become pretty good friends and he's just a stand up guy."

It helped, of course, that Massel had a monstrous six hundredths of a second starting line advantage over Barone to move on to round three.

"We were running a guy named Lonnie Johnson who had been hitting the tree pretty good," Massel said of his third round opponent. "He was in a situation where he could have used us up, but he has some problems on the starting line and had to shut it down. So things were really just starting to fall our way."

"You just really have to take advantage of those situations and when you look at the semi-finals, it myself, Arnie Martel, Sal Biondo and David Rampy and that's a pretty fearsome four, I would like to think, of racers so there were no slouches there," he added.

Out of the four remaining cars, Massel was set to square off with Arnie Martel. Martel was running a little behind getting to the lanes and appeared to be a little down on power. That added with Massel still not having to carry any CIC made Martel go for it on the line and just missed the tree, going .006 red and sending Massel to the final.

Over on the other side of the semifinal matchups, K&N powerhouse David Rampy continued his trek and made his way to his 127th NHRA National Event final the final after Biondo put up the .008 redlight.

"So now in the final I have the winningest driver I sportsman history," smiled Massel. "David is as good as it gets and we are actually pretty good friends. We make a conscience effort to try and stay on the opposite sides of the ladder or at least away from each other."

"David was down six hundredths [CIC], so he was like fighting with one arm," he explained. "I'll take any advantage I can get all day long against David Rampy. The breaks or luck we had been having all day, went away in the final. I figured he would be twenty or better on the tree and two [hundredths] left in performance and he did exactly what I thought. The problem was, I let go of the transbrake button and the car didn't move. And I thought, 'Oh dear Lord this is not the time for this to happen'."

"We had a situation last year where it cost me two races, where I was having a mechanical malfunction that caused me to go from twenty and thirty on the tree to one-twenty and it was something erratic, so it didn't happen every time," he pointed out. "Realistically, I should have been able to drive the finish line blind and still make it out of the final clean, just because of the handicap that David had. When I got to halftrack, I thought about shutting it off, but then I thought the only thing worse that losing index would be losing this race."

That thought to keep his foot in it wasn't necessarily from the little voice in his head, but the little voice he spoke to on the phone just prior to the final round.

"Daddy, you have to beat Rampy," Massel smiled as he repeated the words of his four year old son. "See, he knows everybody and who they are. I told him I was going to try and he said again, 'No Daddy, you have to beat Rampy'."

Even though Massel took a three hundredths hit on his permanent index, he did the best he could to not take any more stripe than needed to seal the deal in an all K&N Comp Eliminator final for his fifth NHRA National Event victory and made it 2-0 against Rampy in NHRA finals.

Massel utilizes several K&N products not only on his championship race car, but speaks highly of the new HD K&N air filter on his tow rig. "The new K&N air filter for large diesel trucks and RV's that we have started using has helped us pick up not only fuel mileage but I really feel we have picked up some more horsepower, as well."

K&N receives the Tuning Theo Award 2011 for the category 'Best Brand Motor Tuning'.
Tuning World Bodensee is an international exhibition for car tuning, lifestyle and the tuning club scene. Over 1,000 tuned cars are on display, while 235 exhibitors and 152 clubs participate to show their appreciation to the tuning community. This year at Tuning World Bodensee in Friedrichshafen, Germany, K&N received a Tuning Theo Award 2011 in the category 'Best Brand Motor Tuning'. Out of 3 nominees, K&N was voted best brand by subscribers of 'VW Speed' and 'Tuning', the two most popular magazines in Germany's tuning industry.

Publisher Delius-Klasing introduced the Tuning Theo award, named after tuning pioneer Theo Decker, in 2010 to give recognition to the best companies in the tuning industry. They organized an Internet poll for the 25,000+ subscribers of their two magazines, 'VW Speed' and 'Tuning', who chose K&N as the winner in one of the 11 award categories. While being a nominee at the first Tuning Theo award presentation in 2010, K&N is proud to have won a 2011 award.

This really shows the appreciation of the brand in the German tuning industry, since the winners of the Tuning Theo award are elected by end consumers and therefore active users of the actual products. K&N has always believed in looking forward and raising the bar. That's why we have worked hard on a new product line, the 57S air induction kits, which are performance intake system for European applications. K&N's 57S air intake systems carry the TUV approval, which is considered the most stringent European test standard in terms of quality, sound and emissions.

K&N backed Ethan Myatt from Clovis, California races 600cc Micro Sprints at Lemoore Raceway. A Micro Sprint is basically a shrunk down version of a full-sized Sprint Car. Myatt is a high school sophomore holding down a 3.5 GPA, and he's very close friends with another K&N sponsored driver, World of Outlaws racer Jason Meyers. Myatt says, "Meyer has offered up a lot of advice and help - he's a great mentor to me."

Team EM Motorsports is made up of Myatt and his crew chief dad and his grandpa, as well as his best friend from time-to-time.

"Things are looking great so far this year," Myatt said, "Starting off with a second place finish in the first race was a great way to start the season."

In the next three races Myatt went on to finish with a seventh, fifth and eighth place respectively.

Myatt explains, "We put together a brand new car hoping to go for the Stock Class Championship at Lemoore this year. We have struggled every race this year so far, but several weeks ago we made a massive change to the set-up which helped us come from 12th to 8th so we are making progress."

"We are mainly racing Lemoore this year due to the fact that we only have one engine, and don't want to push the issue because we are trying to go for a championship this year," continues Myatt. "Next year, we plan on moving up to the Super 600 class, in that class you can do quite frankly anything to the engine, and you can have the advantage of being able to adjust your shock set-up from the cockpit. The only thing is that in the Super 600 class, the more you do to the engine, the more weight you're required to add to the car."

Dynojet Race Team's Frank Wrathall Scores at Deepdale Stadium

Frank Wrathall from Garstang, Lancashire, England is an engineer by trade, a racecar driver by skill and passion, and a footballer by heart. Wrathall recently fulfilled a boyhood dream by appearing on the turf at Preston North End (PNE), although not as a footballer (soccer player), but rather as a driver, bringing with him the brand new Toyota Avensis he races in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship.
2011 is Dynojet Race Team's first season competing in the British Touring Car Championship and it's clearly seen as a learning year.
2011 is Dynojet Race Team's first season competing in the British Touring Car Championship and it's clearly seen as a learning year.

As a lifelong PNE supporter, the 24-year-old K&N backed racer, was invited along to the Deepdale Stadium not only to show off his BTCC Toyota, but also to help dish out the end-of-season awards to the club's players and staff at the final home match of the season.

"It was surreal finally to be on the pitch," Wrathall said. "I used to watch from the stands as a lad and longed to be out there playing, back in the days when I wanted to grow up to be a footballer and not a racing driver."

Wrathall kicked-off his kart racing career in 1998 at the age of 11, and after completing only six Cadet races, he quickly moved into junior TKM (100cc direct drive karts) competing at club level the following year.
Once the new Avensis and Frank Wrathall's skills harmonize, every indication points to great race success.

In 2000 he graduated to yet another boarder class in Junior Gearbox (85cc 6-speed gearbox karts) and became the inaugural National Champion, taking four out of six race victories. The very next year Wrathall became the Junior Gearbox National Open Champion.

For the next eight years Wrathall continued to move up through the racing ranks, collecting honors and highlights, and with each came ever more fervor and confidence that he had indeed followed his destiny in the proper direction.

Then, in 2009 Wrathall took the next logical step, moving from the Ginetta G50 Cup, into the British Touring Car Championship. With the prestige and unrivalled media coverage, this meant an ultra-competitive field, including many established stars. Wrathall went on and produced his best season to date, showcasing his talent in front of massive crowds and TV audiences. He claimed a record 23 podiums, including five wins and 11 second places, on his way to second overall in the series.

For the 2011 season Wrathall joined the Dynojet Race Team. Team spokesperson, Robin Evans, told K&N Race News, "This is our first season in the British Touring Car Championship, and this is seen as very much a learning year for the driver, team and everyone involved."

The Dynojet Race Team, was founded by Frank Wrathall Sr., with the progression of his son Frank's racing career. Starting out as a low-key, yet particularly professionally run team, the squad has grown into what is now regarded as one of the best teams in the BTCC paddock.

The vehicle tasked with entertaining Wrathall's driving talents is the Toyota Avensis. "The car is completely new for 2011, and the first built to the 'Next Generation Touring Car' rules, and has only been racing for six weeks," added Evans. "The Avensis will be very competitive later in the season as development continues and the 'bugs' are ironed out."

The British Touring Car Championship consists of ten events (30 races), contested in both England and Scotland. Wrathall and Dynojet Race Team's next contest is June, 5 at Oulton Park.

Only a week ago we reported about Cole Whitt's career defining NASCAR moment after he finished second to Kyle Busch in the Lucas Oil 200 -

well that was so last week. Whitt's defining moments keep redefining at a blistering rate so try and keep up. The Red Bull rookie now leads the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, becoming the first rookie, and at age 19, the youngest driver ever to lead that series.

By any standards, NASCAR is a tough nut to crack, so after Whitt missed the field in Camping World Truck Series Daytona qualifying, yet managed to find another ride, some went all sour- grapes about his NASCAR ladder climbing technique.

So, in what might be interpreted as a "how you like me now" defining moment, this past weekend in Charlotte, Whitt finished third behind Sprint Cup Series regulars Kyle Busch and Clint Bowyer. With yet another strong finish Whitt has now positioned himself with a one point lead over Johnny Sauter.

Whitt told K&N Race News, "I would say our team has just been getting faster and faster with time. Learning with, and from each other, and dialing in the trucks. It's been a great progression."
Whitt describes his driving style pretty smooth and laid-back.

Whitt credits having great parents for why he's been able to stay grounded and focused, making it clear that they taught him how to act and carry himself. "I stay disciplined from having good morals growing up, and having good people around me in racing. I just stay humble, because you never know when this could all come to an end," he adds. "So right now I am enjoying the ride."

In describing his driving style Whitt confesses, "I think I'm a pretty smooth, laid-back, driver that can get up on the wheel when its go time. It's being able to know when to go is the hard part. I try to figure out how to race to the end."

The K&N sponsored driver says he will continue to remain focused on the moment, taking it one day and one race at a time. Making it to the Sprint Cup Series has long been his goal, since first dreaming of becoming a racecar driver and now the second part of that dream, being successful when he got there, is on the fast track to fulfillment.
