David Meets Goliath in the Fastrak South East Touring Series

Late Model Mania took place at the Lavonia Speedway in Georgia. K&N sponsored racer Chris Steele made the run in the Fastrak South East Touring Series.

Steele wheeled out his Yellow bodied, Green GRT Chassis with fifty six other GM Performance Crate Late Models. Steele wanted the top prize of $3,000 for the winner of the fifty lap feature.

He qualified with the fourth quickest time at the historic Georgia oval track. Steele drove his 602 cubic inch motor with K&N products against a field that consisted mainly of 604 cubic inch motors.

“I used my knowledge of my dirt late model chassis and setups to muscle my way to a top five finish,” said Steele. “It’s kind of a David and Goliath story, because my smaller motor was against the bigger motors all night. I came under the checkers in third place.”

Steele said his K&N filters performed to perfection. “We are using the lower horse powered crate engine against bigger engines and we have to have the air flow to our carburetor to make maximum horse power,” he said. “K&N ensures we get the maximum air flow every time.”

The Factory Aprilia Millennium Technologies Team scored two top ten finishes in AMA Daytona SportBike competition at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California.

Team Rider Chaz Davies and Ben Thompson rode the Aprilia RSV1000Rs. “The new AMA rolling start and superpole qualifying procedures have put a huge emphasis on getting up to speed early,” said Chip Spalding, Team Manager. “If a team makes a mistake in qualifying it can affect the outcome of the entire weekend.”

Chaz qualified in the twelfth position with a time of 1:28.735. This earned him a starting spot on the outside of row six. Thompson had an electrical problem in final qualifying and had to compete on his back-up-bike. He was only able to turn two laps at speed. His qualifying time of 1:30.261 earned him a starting position on the outside of the eleventh row.

Race One was bittersweet for the Millennium Technologies sponsored Aprilia Team. Davies finished in eighth position. Thompson had another mechanical issue and was forced to retire. The crew worked late into the night to repair Thompson’s motorcycle.

“The team is working really hard and we are making progress,” said Ben Thompson. “But I am suffering from a lack of track time. You are bound to have problems when developing a new motorcycle at this level. I have 100 percent confidence that the KWS Motorsport team will get this all sorted out before our next race in Atlanta.”

The next day, Thompson started in the back of the field and knew he had a difficult race to run. In Race Two, both riders got excellent starts. Thompson made up several positions and finished in the seventeenth position. Davies rode hard for the first few laps and finished in seventh position.

“It was a good weekend and we made progress with the bike,” said Chaz Davies. “If we make a few more steps forward we can be really competitive in Atlanta in two weeks.”

“We’re hoping to build on this performance,” said Spalding. “We use K&N products on everything we build. K&N air and oil filters do the job of protecting our engines from dirt and track debris.”

Corona Extra Honda Racing Team Superbike Gets Up to Speed in Fontana, California

The first Auto Club Speedway Superbike race in Fontana, California was a good run for Corona Extra Honda Racing. Jake Holden stood in for injured team rider Neil Hodgson. Holden drove his Honda CBR1000RR to a fifth place finish.

Holden pushed ahead of the factory Yamaha team after a duel that lasted the entire race. He was up to speed in practice and just missed a crash during race one. The incident brought out the red flag and a restart. Holden was in eighth place after the first lap. Holden then began to pick off racers in the top ten.

"I didn't get a very good start but just tried to be consistent," he said. "The Yamaha's Team riders held me up and I had a hard time getting past them. I was getting more confident on the bike as the race went on and started closing in on Blake Young by the end."

On day two of the race, the weather did not cooperate. Heavy rain affected warm-up practice. Holden spent the session becoming familiar with the Honda Superbike's power during the rain. Holden said he wanted a dry race.

Holden got his wish. The green flag dropped under sunny skies. Unfortunately, during race two a red flag came out on the first lap. On the restart Holden settled into sixth for a few laps before charging up to fourth place. Holden was about to make the pass when an electrical problem on his Honda slowed him down and forced him to retire.

"I thought it was a fuel problem so I dropped to the trackside," he said. "I got back on the bike and tried again, but it was worse and I pulled in."

Rick Watters, owner of RWR Racing Engines, has been involved in the racing industry for over 25 years. He is considered to be one of the premier custom engine builders in the country and has provided motors for countless national champions. Watters served as Chief Engine Builder and Crew Chief for Eaton Enterprises race team from 2000 to 2008, before buying the company in 2009 and changing the name to RWR Racing. Based in Glendale, Arizona, RWR builds custom high performance engines for racing, street and marine applications. Their services include custom machining, assembly and dyno testing. The company no longer has a race team, but has chosen to become more involved with their customers and even providing trackside engine support. "Our customers' racing performance is very important to us. We are very proud that they have won NHRA national championships, NHRA division championships, and set countless NHRA national records with our motors," says Watters.

Keith Johnson started his business 35 years ago, and out of necessity, he branched out into camshaft design and manufacturing about 15 years ago. As a championship competitive racer himself, he knew that to keep his edge, the camshafts he used must meet his exacting standards.

The problem was he simply could not find them. To resolve this he did what most entrepreneurs in this industry do, he went out and bought the equipment he needed to machine them, taught himself how, and eventually went into the manufacturing business. He is now considered a master machinist.
