Servicing the K&N 38-2017S heavy duty air filter is fast and easy. Simply spray the K&N Heavy Duty Air Filter Cleaner on the dirty side of the filter allowing it to fully soak in. Then, use a low pressure, pressure-washer to rinse the filter off, from the white side towards the red, pushing the dirt out the same way it came in. Once the air filter is clean, use low-pressure compressed air to blow the water out of the filter and dry it. It just doesn't get any easier than that.     K&N's HD air filter hybrid media does not require the use of air filter oil which makes cleaning a breeze. Providing additional performance, longer service intervals and the much needed engine protection is K&N's main goal when developing the 38-2000S canister air filter. This Heavy Duty air filter mounts horizontally with a supplied 90 degree canister. The canister has a metal side flange for the air inlet and a metal base flange for connecting it to the engine air intake.     When it comes to servicing this heavy duty air filter, just watch for when the restriction gauge reaches 20 inches of restriction (in the red), or once a year, depending on driving conditions. Once this happens, it is time to clean the K&N heavy duty air filter. K&N's 38-2000S heavy duty air filter is very easy to clean using 99-6038 heavy duty air filter cleaner and following the simple cleaning instructions or by watching the heavy duty air filter cleaning video. Simply disconnect the hose connection from the canister and remove the air filter from the engine compartment for servicing.

    Once the 38-2000S air filter and canister are removed, spin off the wing-nut holding the canister to the filter and remove the canister exposing the filter. With the air filter removed from the canister, spray on K&N's Heavy Duty air filter cleaner 99-6038 and let it soak in to break up road grime and dust in the air filter. Once the cleaner is all soaked in for a few minutes, but before it dries, use water to spray the air filter from the inside (clean side) outward to rinse out the old dirt and cleaner. The use of a low pressure pressure-washer can be helpful to get that little bit of extra-stubborn dirt out of the filter material. Remeber the outside is red, which means the dirty side is on the outside of the air filter. The clean side is white.

    Once the filter is dry, the canister can be put back on and the air filter can now be reinstalled. To assist in the drying process, the use of a low pressure air supply can help save time. One aspect that makes this filter so easy to clean is that it does not use any kind of air filter oil, meaning less work to service and less downtime to clean the air filter.     K&N's 77-9037KP air intake system is designed to be a direct bolt on setup that is an easy to install performance modification, only needing a little time and some simple tools to get the job done. The K&N 77-9037KP air intake system includes all the necessary pieces and hardware required to slap on an estimated gain of 7.8 ft-lb of torque at 3578 RPM and 7.6 horsepower at 4976 RPM making this truck stand out even more.

    The 77-9037KP air intake system includes a mandrel bent aluminum tube that has been engineered for the Toyota Tacoma's specific mass air sensor calibration and powertrain control module setup. By designing the tube to work with the stock sensor and computer, you do not need to re-program the computer and you will not get a check engine light. The tube's setup also includes a sensor specific adapter making it easy to transfer the stock mass air sensor to the new tube easily.

    Also included with the 77-9037KP air intake is a powder coated heat shield and K&N's RF-1042XD reusable air filter. The heat shield has been engineered to block the hot under-hood air from getting to the air filter and making sure that the engine only sucks in that nice cooler outside air.     Derek Thorn won his first NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race of 2012 and took over the lead in the series standings. He led all 150 laps in the G-Oil 150 at Stockton 99 Speedway in California and won the third NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race of his career.

    Thorn took the lead from pole winner Cameron Hayley on the first lap of the race. He stayed out front through 10 caution periods including one on lap 136 when rookie Cole Custer spun out in turn 4.

    That set up an exciting finish. Sergio Pena dove to the bottom of the race track on the final restart to take over second place. He tried to overtake Thorn, but had to settle for the runner-up spot.

    “It’s tough,” Thorn said. “Sergio Pena did this move I haven’t seen in quite some time. All of a sudden I just seen the blue car come out of nowhere. It could have ended very badly. Thank God we were able to kind of squeeze by there on the outside.”

    Thorn moved into first place in the K&N Pro Series West standings. He has a four-point lead over Hayley, the 16-year-old driver from Canada, after two races.

    Pena, who was making his second career K&N Pro Series West start after three seasons in the K&N Pro Series East, notched his second top-five finish in a row.

    “I just had to dive on the inside with everything I had,” Pena said. “I was I just trying to do a little slide job in there to see what I could do. I just had a lot of fun. I’m bummed I didn’t get the win, but I’m happy for second.”

    Pena said he gambled at the end of the race and it almost paid off.

    “We just had to kind of go for it there at the end,” Pena said. “We made it stick with Cameron, but couldn’t get by Derek. I had such a blast out here racing at Stockton. It’s short-track racing at its best. It reminds me of racing back at Bowman Gray (Stadium), just a little more banking. Coming out here from the East to the West is a little bit different move, but they’re tough out here.”

    Hayley finished in third after Pena passed him in the final laps of the race.

    “I think Hayley kinda got the short end of the stick,” Thorn said. “But I gotta give Hayley credit. He handled himself well in that situation because he got the short end of the stick. He raced me clean all night which was cool to see.”

    It was Hayley’s second podium finish of the season. He was second in the K&N Pro Series West season opener at Phoenix International Raceway.

    “We went away a little bit through the center of (turns) one and two about half way through. Just didn’t quite have enough for Thorn,” said Hayley who set the track record in qualifying at Stockton. “At the end there, it was every man for himself. There was beating and banging. But we were really happy with the run.”

    Greg Pursley, who came into the race as the leader in the K&N Pro Series West standings after winning the season opener in Phoenix, was 10th. He dropped to third place in the West Series standings, six points behind Thorn.

    Luis Tyrrell, making his K&N Pro Series West debut, was fourth in the race at Stockton. Eric Holmes was fifth.

    The next race on the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West schedule is at Brainerd International Speedway in Minnesota on May 25.

    The G-Oil 150 from Stockton 99 Speedway will be televised on Speed on May 16 at 3 p.m. EST.

    Jeg Coughlin Finds His Way Back to the NHRA Pro Stock Pole in Houston

    For the first time since 2010, multi-time K&N Horsepower Challenge champ Jeg Coughlin secured the NHRA Pro Stock pole during the 26th annual O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals at Royal Purple Raceway in Baytown, Texas. Coughlin became only the second driver of the 2013 season to start race day at the top and grab the low qualifier bonus check from K&N Engineering, as K&N’s Mike Edwards had a stranglehold on the top spot during the first five events of the year.

    During the first qualifying session on Friday, it would be Shane Gray and his 2013 Camaro grabbing the provisional pole with a 6.570. K&N’s Mike Edwards, who has been the one to beat during qualifying to this point of the season, made a very uncharacteristic lap and shut off early when his 2013 Camaro shook early in the run and slowed to only a 7.507. In an earlier pair, Coughlin opened his qualifying attempts with a solid 6.604 to jump into the top half of the ladder at number six.

    Friday’s second session proved to be an extra important one, as weather would wash any further qualifying the following day. Mike Edwards found a little more of his power and in the opening pair bounced all the way up from the bottom to number two with a 6.572, but it would be Jeg Coughlin who would be hard to stop in more ways than one.

    After soaring up to the number one spot by a mere one-thousandth of a second with a 6.569 at 211.20, Coughlin also nearly sailed into the sand trap at the far end of race track after a parachute malfunction. The multi-time NHRA champion was on and off of the brakes in his Dodge Avenger and managed to stop the car just mere inches from getting into the marbles.

    “You have to really be ready for anything,” Coughlin said following a masterful driving job. “But I honestly wasn’t ready for that one. Our parachutes always work and work well, and this run was really fantastic but my attention was quickly stolen. Fortunately this is a long shutdown area. It also is a seasoned shutdown area and has a lot of bumps.

    “I had to be careful and not lock it up. I didn’t want to slide too much in slowing from 211 to 180 to 160 to 150. Once it gets slower you can slide a bit but you always have to be mindful you have someone in the lane next to you. The last thing I wanted to do was tangle up two of these things.”

    Luckily for Coughlin, damage to his Pro Stock entry was minimal and he mentioned that his team would swap out the front tires just as a precautionary measure before Saturday’s qualifying runs.

    At this point, Coughlin had managed to stop the freight train of Mike Edwards and if nothing else, at least slow his momentum.

    “It doesn’t hurt,” Coughlin admitted following Friday’s activities, when asked how important it was to curb the point leader’s charge. “Mike has had the pole at the first five events and I’m sure if he has anything to say about it, he’s coming for this number one position tomorrow. And to be honest, he has a good chance of doing it.”

    Come Saturday, the persistent rain washed out most of Pro Stock qualifying and that left Jeg Coughlin Jr as the number one qualifier as well as the K&N Horsepower Challenge $3,000 bonus check winner for the NHRA SpringNationals, helping to boost his point total for the 2014 Challenge.

    His latest feat marked the 18th Pro Stock pole of his stellar career, and now the second at Houston. This was also the first time first time Coughlin held the top spot since joining up with Allen Johnson.

    “It speaks volumes as to where our team has come from this year,” he said of his qualifying performance. “We owe a lot of credit to J&J Racing and Allen Johnson, Roy Johnson and the whole family. When we decided to put a two car team together literally with one team and we’ve been fortunate to be able to do that and communicate extremely well. Between he [Allen Johnson] and I and Vincent Nobile, we’ve made a great threat thus far in the ’13 season. To get our first pole in a couple of seasons is fantastic.”

    Even if the rains had stayed away, the air conditions were very sticky compared to the previous day, but Coughlin still felt there could have been some juggling of names on the ladder. “I think there was a shout at it,” he said when asked if teams could have improved. “As well as Mike [Edwards] has been running, I think there was definitely a 6.56 out there, probably not much more than that and we were hoping to come back out and run a solid 6.57, unless we just absolutely killed it. We had made some changes to fine tune the car from yesterday.”

    With the 2014 K&N Horsepower Challenge chase just getting started three events ago in Las Vegas, Coughlin moves within ten points of current leader, Mike Edwards. Shane Gray, 2013 K&N Horsepower Challenge champ Allen Johnson and Erica Enders-Stevens wrap up the top five.
