K&N Spring Fling Promoter & Racer Peter Biondo Rocks Confidently Into Remaining Season

After a very busy Spring, Peter Biondo turned his sites to big dollar bracket racing with his feared K&N backed 2011 Racetech Dragster
After a very busy Spring, Peter Biondo turned his sites to big dollar bracket racing with his feared K&N backed 2011 Racetech Dragster
It was Confucius that claimed "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life." Any uncertainties regarding the practical soundness of the Chinese philosopher's sage advice are cast aside by K&N driver Peter Biondo. Last year when we spoke with Biondo he had just won his 45th NHRA National Event at the Ford NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol, and since then he has developed into an even more ferociously productive multitasker.

"In 2010, my partner and good friend, Kyle Seipel and I dreamed up a business plan based on something we know, and have loved for years - drag racing. Four years later, the K&N Spring Fling brand of events has grown quicker than we could have ever imagined," remarked the Maspeth, New York resident. "At this point, I can confidently say we have the biggest and most talked about bracket race on both coasts, and the best part about it is that we love what we do, which makes the long days so much easier to deal with."

Statistically, new racing events average at best 150 entrants in their first year, the K&N Spring Fling Vegas event held in April, however, had 400 cars show up. "That was the highest of the 2013 highlights for us," said Biondo the promoter. "We were blown away when that many racers piled in." At their K&N Spring Fling 20s event in Bristol, Tennessee, Biondo and Seipel turned up the heat a notch further, breaking the single class event record when 500 cars came to race.

As a driver, Biondo started the year off with a $5000 Super Gas win at South Georgia Motorsports Park in his K&N backed 1963 Corvette, and two days later he ended up in the Winners Circle of the NHRA Lucas Oil Race at the same venue, this time in his Super Stock Firebird.

"The one thing that especially stands out about how I opened the season is, since it was my first time racing in three months, I was having more fun than normal just being on the track. Anytime you're having fun, it's easier to perform better."

"Other than that, one thing that really stands out this year is the big buck $25,000 to win event at Atco in New Jersey," continued Biondo the racer. "Going into the event, I was a little uneasy about my chances because I took two months off from racing while promoting the K&N Spring Fling events, and this style of racing is about as tough as it gets. Day one I was able to put up nine near perfect .00 reaction times in a row and made it to the final of this big event. Although I lost in the final round, I still earned $10,000 for the runner up finish, but more importantly, my confidence was back."

Indeed, Biondo's mojo had been restored to its brilliant luster in that final round, as he left the line with a .006 reaction time and ran within five-thousandths of his dial, yet it wasn't good enough as Don Butkewitz had a perfect .000 reaction time and ran dead on the dial. "It was the best I have ever driven and still came up short" added Biondo after recording 14 runs in a row with a .009 reaction time or better. "It's a testament to how competitive racing has become".

"I would rank this year as 'different' more than anything," says Biondo reflecting on his overall 2013 record. "Since focusing on the K&N Spring Fling events, I haven't raced quite as much. It's like starting up any business; you have to devote time to it, and a lot of it, from the months before an event, to the months after. Yes, I have had some race wins, but not as many as compared to other years in my overall resume. The plan is to hit it hard the last two months and hopefully finish off 2013 with another win or two."

"We are getting ready to hit the final leg of the year pretty hard," says the six-time US Nationals Champion Biondo Rocks. "Starting with the NHRA event in Reading, Pennsylvania, then we're going to the Million Dollar Race in Alabama, and then we are heading to NHRA events in Vegas and Pomona."

Duane La Fleur Embarks Upon Final Three Events of 2013 With Vigor

Duane La Fleur experienced his share of success throughout 2013 and is already preparing for the upcoming season
Duane La Fleur experienced his share of success throughout 2013 and is already preparing for the upcoming season
As the 2013 season dwindled down, Duane La Fleur Rolled into the Brainerd Int'l Raceway in Brainerd, Minnesota on a mission. There were only two more events scheduled beyond the 32nd Annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals. If all went as hoped for, success at this event would carry over to La Fleur's next venue. There was obviously power in confidence, and he welcomed every edge possible to make a victory come easier.

Having come off of two impressive performances at Denver and Sonoma, La Fleur carried confidence with him into this event as well. He was on a roll, and dominated rounds throughout the bulk of the event. Lining up to race in the semi finals on the final day, Duane La Fleur was eager for the tree to glow green.

But in spite of his stellar performance thus far, La Fleur red lighted off of the line. It was a crucial mistake, costing him the victory. "I felt that if I had made it to the finals, I had a good shot at the win."

Duane La Fleur's next stop was at Bowling Green, Kentucky, where he was scheduled to run in a Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Event. La Fleur and his Camaro Roadster appeared to be as one and unstoppable.

La Fleur weeded through his competitors to the semifinals in round five. Again though, La Fleur's quest to the most coveted final race was detoured when he tapped the brakes coming to the strip. It was a slight miscalculation, but a miscalculation none-the-less that would cost him a victory, by approximately 10 inches.

However, La Fleur had nothing to hang his head about, as he had managed to reach the semi finals during his past two events. Going into the last race of the season, he followed the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series to Indianapolis, Indiana, to compete in the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals, at the Lucas Oil Raceway.

As race-time neared, one would suspect that anticipation ran high for La Fleur, as he hoped his success from the previous two events would bleed into the final event of the season. However, luck had other ideas. In fact, Duane La Fleur was eliminated from the Super Gas division in a first-round battle.

Even though his run at Indianapolis didn't go as hoped for, La Fleur was satisfied with his overall success, and rightfully so. With this season behind him, he is already looking forward to the opening race of 2014.

That in mind, La Fleur will be getting his Camaro fine-tuned and ready to roll. But he is mindful that a man and his car are but a small element of triumph. "My team is the most important thing to make us successful," ensured Duane La Fleur. My dad maintains the race car, mom is the team leader at the track and my wife is a huge supporter. It is much more than a team; it's a family."

Duane La Fleur and his team are also strong advocates of proper maintenance. "Maintenance is huge," he ensured. "If you don't take the time after each race to go through everything, it will come back and bite you at the most inopportune time.

"K&N makes the best filters on the market today, by far," he continued in reference to proper maintenance. " We've used the K&N air scoop filter since the day we had this car built, which is going on eight years. The motor looks as clean inside as the day we assembled it. We've run K&N oil filters on all of our motors , and they hold up under every condition we've thrown at them. We even use K&N oil and air filters on the tractor that pulls our trailer across the country.

"We run K&N exclusively on all of our equipment and have never had any issues," he continued. "K&N is definitely the best product for our team..."

Looking forward to the upcoming season, Duane La Fleur concluded, "We plan on improving in 2014, and we are starting to work on it now. We have started pulling things apart and will freshen up all of our spare transmissions and converters. We will go through the motor to ensure we have ample power to be competitive on the track. And we'll pull normal maintenance on the truck and trailer. We should be finished and ready to hit the road in March of 2014."
