Over the course of four days each November, automotive industry insiders gather at the Las Vegas Convention Center for what has become a celebration of everything automotive related. The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show brings the hottest new cars, custom vehicles, innovative products, and automotive celebrities from around the world under one roof. As a trade-only event, the SEMA show is closed off to the public. However, for 2014, SEMA decided to give the public a treat and introduced the SEMA Ignited after party. The inaugural SEMA Ignited was free of charge, and open to the public not far from the convention center at the LINQ Las Vegas High Roller Event lot.

SEMA Ignited featured a full night of entertainment, including several acres of wild custom cars and trucks. Also on the roster was a dyno exhibition, pitting drivers and their cars against fellow competitors. A burnout showdown gave the crowds all the tire smoke, noise, and gross demonstrations of power they could ask for. SEMA Ignited was also host to the SEMA Battle of the Builders, where top editors served as celebrity judges to decide which vehicle deserved to be called the best of the best. Tom Nelson, who built the 1968 Dodge Charger named Maximus, drove the car from the K&N 2014 SEMA Show booth inside the convention center through the jam packed streets leading to the LINQ Las Vegas. The grueling two-hour traffic jam saw its fair share of casualties, from running out of gas, to overheating, and even a fender bender involving a Ferrari 458 Italia and a lifted Jeep Wrangler JK.

Walking around the LINQ Las Vegas High Roller Event lot was quite an experience for public and industry attendees alike. Normally the high-caliber vehicles of the SEMA show are spread across the 3.2 million square foot convention center and every parking lot within a ¼ mile radius. SEMA Ignited brought many of the SEMA Show cars into a highly concentrated mecca for auto enthusiasts. Beautiful examples of SEMA vehicles from nearly every custom vehicle niche imaginable could be found in one place, just inches away from the next gorgeous car or truck.

While the four day long SEMA show in Las Vegas, Nevada can take its toll on even the most seasoned industry professional, the inaugural SEMA Ignited after party was an excellent way to celebrate the end of what could be considered the best SEMA show in years. Nick Drake was able to lead the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Casino Arizona 100 race at Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, Arizona from the pole position to the checkered flag

Nick Drake scored his first NASCAR K&N Pro Series victory behind the wheel of the number 99 Bill McAnally Racing NAPA Auto Parts Toyota. This makes Drake the fourth driver to win a NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race in that car just this year. Drake has recently completed his rookie season in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East with a 10th place overall finish. Whatever the BMR team has done with this number 99 car must be working, as Drake was able to lead the Casino Arizona 100 at Phoenix International Raceway from the pole position to the checkered flag. Drake was awarded the Coors Light Pole Award for having the fastest qualifying time of 27.316 seconds.

Gray Gaulding took second place in the Krispy Kreme Chevrolet, followed by the number 00 car driven by Cole Custer. Jessie Little, who has raced both the east and west series’, finished out the night in fourth, with Dylan Lupton rounding out the top five. Despite the lack of lead changes, the racing was pretty intense as the night was winding down. “That was some of the best racing we’ve had all season,” said third place finisher Cole Custer. Gray Gaulding followed up by saying “It’s pretty cool when we’re three or four wide and everyone comes to the finish.” Gaulding, Custer, Little, and Lupton are all members of the NASCAR Next Program which spotlights the sport’s up and coming stars.

The Casino Arizona 100 at Phoenix International Raceway signaled the end of the 2014 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West season, as well as the end of Greg Pursley’s NASCAR K&N Pro Series career. “As of right now, I guess I’m retired,” said Pursley. Greg has finished off what is perhaps his final season in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series in style. Pursley grabbed the series points lead after just the second race of the season and never relinquished it. “I’m very happy to go out as the champion on top,” commented Pursley. “It’s been a lot of fun racing these kids.” Pursley’s NASCAR K&N Pro Series career includes two championships, one second, and one third place finish.

Pursley was just 17 points ahead of the runner-up Dylan Lupton. David Mayhew trailed Lupton by 20 points for a narrow third place finish over Brandon McReynolds. James Bickford, who has clinched the Sunoco Rookie of the Year award, finished out the 2014 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West season fifth in points. Greg Pursley will be honored for his championship winning season at the NASCAR Touring Series Awards in the Grand Ballroom of the Charlotte, North Carolina Convention Center at the NASCAR Hall of Fame on Saturday, December 13th.
