Simple Upgrades for Your Ram 1500 That Add Performance and Protection

2010 Ram 1500 with K&N intake

K&N makes air filters, cold air intakes, and a variety of oil filters for the Ram 1500

While the Ram name began to be used in 1981, the trucks to which the named was affixed were largely upgraded versions of the Dodge D Series which debuted in 1972. What many consider to be the first true Ram truck for the 1994 model year. Its design not only broke with the past but separated it from other pickups of the time, with its “big rig” truck styling.

This is considered the Second Generation of Ram 1500, and was produced until 2001. The new design and the truck underneath it completely up-ended the pickup truck market, with Ram sales going from 78,000 units in 1993 to 240,000 in 1994 and 410,000 in 1995. Engines offered in the 1994 – 2001 Ram 1500 carried over from the first generation Ram and included the 3.9L V6, 5.2L V8, and 5.9L V8. In the middle of the model run, the RAM 1500 5.9L Magnum V8 was upgraded from 230 horsepower to 245 horsepower.

The third generation Ram 1500 bowed for the 2002 model year. The third generation featured an all-new frame, suspension, interiors, sheet metal, and engines. Dodge replaced the 3.9L V6, which was based on the old 318 V8 LA design, with a more modern 3.7L Magnum V6. The Magnum 4.7L V8 was revised several times during the third gen, and then after two years, the 5.9L Magnum was replaced by the 5.7L Hemi V8. In addition, from 2002 – 2007 Dodge offered the Viper V10 engine in a RAM and marketed it as the SRT-10.

The fourth generation Ram was unveiled at the 2008 Detroit Show. Features added for the 2009 model included a new four-door cab, a five-link coil spring rear suspension on the 1500, a new available Hemi engine, and the Rambox, which provides for secure storage inside the truck’s bed walls. For the 2014 model year a 3.0L V6 EcoDiesel was added to the engine options for the 1500. The fourth generation Ram remains in production at least through the 2017 model year.

K&N Performance Air Intake Systems Intake

The intake system of new cars and trucks is often compromised and as a result doesn't deliver as much fresh air as the engine can draw. K&N performance air intake systems replace the entire restrictive factory air intake system with an aerodynamically-engineered intake tube and oversized conical filter. Most systems include a heat shield to isolate the intake from being contaminated by hot engine air. K&N performance air intake systems are dyno tested to estimate the horsepower gain you can expect with a K&N system installed. Applications for the 2009 – 2017 Ram 1500 include:

K&N Oil Filters

The SS filter is well-suited for use by racing teams who want to keep a close eye on their engines

The metal SS oil filters can be disassembled, inspected, cleaned, and reinstalled repeatedly

As an expert in filtration K&N produces oil filters that block 99% of foreign material while maintaining a high oil flow rate. Further, K&N oil filters are compatible with both synthetic and conventional oils. K&N wrench-off oil filters are great for street, muscle car, or race applications. The wrench-off oil filters are a canister oil filter with a twist. Beyond being well-known for their durability and strength, they feature an easy wrench-off removal design with a one-inch nut welded to the end. K&N Performance Silver oil filters are designed to provide better engine performance by reducing oil filter restriction. They are engineered to handle all grades of synthetic and conventional motor oils, including blends, and use a pleated filtration media that provides increased capacity and outstanding filtration.

At the top of the range is the K&N washable and reusable billet automotive oil filter. The filter housings are machined from 6061 T6 billet aluminum for strength and durability. The filter is finished in a stainless steel micro-sheen and Neodymium magnets are embedded in the canister to remove harmful metallic debris. Dusty Pine’s Custom Sportster Wins the J&P Modified Harley Class in Cleveland, Ohio

Dusty Pine's J&P International Motorcyce Show winning custom Sportster side view

Dusty Pine's beautiful build pays tribute to a lost friend

“While the world is stuck on politics, we're making Sportsters great again!” Dusty Pine isn’t just blowing smoke with his statement. His custom 1993 Harley-Davidson® Sportster rolled away with the Modified Harley Class of the J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show in Cleveland, Ohio. K&N sponsors the Mod Harley competition at each stop of the Progressive International Motorcycle Show (IMS) and we couldn’t be more pleased to recognize Pine’s lean and mean Sportie.

The maroon beauty carries the name Pedro in honor of a dear friend that Pine lost. The Pedro custom is more evidence that the small, independent builders are moving to the forefront of the custom bike world. The Modified Harley Class is one of the most competitive segments of the J&P competition, so the win is even sweeter.

Dusty Pine's J&P International Motorcyce Show winning custom Sportster tank

The one-off gas tank has very cool see-through ports

Let’s get right to it. Pine’s build rolls on a custom hardtail frame that gives Pedro ultra clean lines. The tail end is kept uncluttered with a close-hugging fender and simple solo leather seat. The fade paint job on the frame as it moves forward from the rear axle creates a very cool effect.

That fade effect is carried into the upper fork shrouds that are capped with a small, sleek café-style faring that houses a round LED headlight. The clean and simple motif is continues with the fender-less front wheel.

The innovative fuel tank is a signature piece on the Pedro build. The one-off tank has a see-through element that was a big hit with the thousands of fans at the Cleveland IMS. A series of round ports give glimpses through the beautifully painted part. That paint carries a subtle, embedded gear theme deep in the maroon coating. It also carries that big, bold number 70.

A custom hardtail frame creates a clean look

Pine carried the theme of the see-through ports into the spaced holes in the top of the tank, the exhaust, and the heads. The unity of the aesthetics is a prime feature of the build.

When it comes down to it, a beautiful build has to have a power-plant that screams. Pedro is certainly not one of those customs that’s all show and no go. The 1200cc engine with a 10.5:1 compression ratio and ported and polished heads delivers a no-nonsense 90 horsepower. It runs Andrews cams and features a Bassani exhaust. The V-twin breathes through a Screamin’ Eagle intake.

The Mod Harley Class winner on the Cleveland IMS red carpet

Dusty Pine is understandably excited about what the win in Cleveland means to his bike-building future. “We had a blast! We took first in Modified Harley and qualified for the national championship in Chicago! I could not be happier,” he said after the Ohio IMS.

K&N congratulates Pine on a fantastic build that is turning heads in the custom bike world.

Jimmy DeFrank Wins Fifth NHRA Super Stock Championship

K&N, NHRA, Super Stock; wheelie

K&N-backed driver Jimmy DeFrank won the 2016 NHRA Super Stock championship

Jimmy DeFrank was focused on winning the NHRA Super Stock national championship. He was so focused, he parked one of his cars, focused completely on the K&N-backed Super Stock, and won his fifth NHRA national championship in 2016. It was his first since 2012.

“They’re all different. I can’t say it was more exciting or better or anything. They’re all different,” DeFrank said. “That kind of sticks in my mind more than others. I was very focused on the championship and we changed our game plan a little bit. We usually run two cars, in the Stock category and the Super Stock category. We started this season with a high focus, a 100 percent focus, just on the one category and the one car in Super Stock and it paid off by winning the championship.”

DeFrank started the season by winning the NHRA national event at the Winternationals in Pomona. He won two more events, had two runner-up finishes, and won by a comfortable margin.

“Our theory on focusing on one car worked out well,” DeFrank said. “It’s the one we favor and the one I race the most.”

DeFrank started his NHRA drag racing career in 1995. In 2015, running two cars, he was in contention for championships in the Stock and Super Stock categories. He didn’t win either.

“It just kind of frustrated me and everything,” DeFrank said. “We were close but we just weren’t closing the deal on them. It felt like we weren’t giving 100 percent to each car, because when you’re racing two, it felt like it took us down to 90 or 95 percent effort in each car. We were just rushed and you can’t look at things as close.”

K&N, NHRA, Super Stock; race

Jimmy DeFrank won three NHRA Super Stock events in 2016

When the 2016 season started, DeFrank and his team changed their strategy. The put all their attention on the Super Stock car.

“We took a step back for this year and focused on the one car, our primary car and category, and it paid off and proved our gut feeling,” DeFrank said.

After winning the NHRA national event in Pomona to start the season, DeFrank won an NHRA Divisional event in Fontana. But it wasn’t until he won the Super Stock event in Woodburn, Oregon, a Lucas Oil Division 6 race in September, did he feel confident about winning the championship.

“That’s the one that really gave us the end of the year huge boost in points to put us far in the lead,” DeFrank said. “It was great. It was so much different than past ones. We had some championships that have come down to the very last race of the season where we had to win the race. That was my very first one. This one, it just kind of fell into place, probably the earliest out of any championship. The pressure was off earlier than usual.”

Rain and bad weather affected the races in Oregon. Rain washed out the final day. DeFrank and his team had to wait until Monday before winning the event. He said he and his team, his dad Jim and his crew chief, missed a day of work, but it was worth it.

“It was actually a delayed race,” DeFrank said. “It rained on Sunday. We only got maybe one or two rounds in. We were really focused on making good runs, watching the details, all three of us worked very closely. Of course with one car we can really do a lot. We made really good runs and it came together.”

K&N, NHRA, Super Stock; winners circle

K&N-backed driver Jimmy DeFrank won the NHRA Super Stock season opener in Pomona

DeFrank is heading to Pomona this month for the NHRA Auto Club Winternationals to start his campaign for a sixth national championship. He said his team hasn’t decided yet if concentrating on one car is the way to go. The team is going start the season with one car, but that might change as the season unfolds.

“There’s no difference in preparation,” DeFrank said. “Our team is so big on preparation, literally the day after the world finals ended, the last race of the season, we came home and started preparing for this season. We started preparing the car and also the trailer. It’s just the way we are. Even the small things are important to us, even the inventory of the trailer and the maintenance of the trailer. We did start that early, the day after the race.”

Using K&N air and oil filters in his cars are a big part of how his team prepares for each race and the season. DeFrank said the K&N filters are integral to his team’s success.

“K&N is huge for multiple reasons,” De Frank said. “K&N does a ton for our sport. For our particular car, reliability and preparation are so important. But using the K&N products, which are the best products, they are reliable.”

Broken U-Joint Stops Kruseman’s Attempt to Win Third Chili Bowl

Cory Kruseman and his crew after winning the VRA Midget Championship

Racer Cory Kruseman was in the B main in an attempt to reach the Main A event when a U-Joint on his midget car broke preventing him from a chance to win his third Chili Bowl championship.

Kruseman has been racing the Chili Bowl since 1999 when he came in second. He won the Chili Bowl Championship in 2000 and 2004. He was the preliminary night Chili Bowl winner in 2005, 2006, 2010, and 2012.

The River Spirit Expo Center at Expo Square in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was the site for the event, which was held on Tuesday, January 10 through Saturday, January 14, 2017. A record 372 drivers from 36 states and five countries including the United States, Australia, England, Canada, and New Zealand competed.

The Chili Bowl Midget Nationals, which NASCAR has called the “biggest Midget race of the year” and is nicknamed the “Super Bowl” of midget racing, was started in 1987.

Each night of the five-day event has qualifying races presenting winners with the ultimate chance to qualify for the A-main event. Each qualifying night has heat races, dash-type races and a 25-lap feature race. Drivers who finish poorly in their heat start deep in final night qualifying events and have to finish high in many events to make the A-main event. A driver who started in the lowest “J” event would have to finish high in heats I, H, G, F, E, D, C, and B to reach the A-main event. The top four finishers in the qualifying night’s feature event and the top four finishers of the two Saturday night B-main event go on to compete in the feature A-main event to determine the winner.

Kruseman started in the C main and was successful in his transfer to the B heat when his car suffered the broken U-Joint.

Racing History

Cory Kruseman's midget racer.

The midget car Cory Kruseman races at the Chili Bowl

Kruseman grew up in racing. His father raced motorcycles and cars and was killed in a race car accident when Cory was a kid. That did not deter him from getting involved in the sport. He started racing soon after graduating high school in 1989.

He started racing go karts and steadily graduated to USAC three-quarter midgets, midgets, and sprint cars. Besides winning the Chili Bowl twice, he has won the Non-Winged World Championship, the Western States Dirt Track Championship, ESPN Points Series, the TQ Midget Fall Nationals Championship, the USAC Indiana Sprint Week Championship twice, the 2001 SCRA Championship, 2006 USAC/CRA Championship, 2011 VRA Midget Championship, 2011 USAC Western Midget Championship. He finished second in the Australian Grand Prix in 2001, won three Australian Championships in 2003, and won six of nine events at “Le Midget Grand Prix” in Paris, France in 1994.

When asked how many wins he’s had in his career, Kruseman laughed and noted that he hasn’t kept track. “But one guy told me I had 167 wins in just sprint and midgets,” he said.

He identified his major victories as his two Chili Bowl wins, a world championship win, winning the USAC Championship three times and winning the Oval Nationals, the biggest sprint race of the year.

For 13 years in a row Kruseman has raced in New Zealand and Australia in the winter and all over the United States in the summer.

Currently, he competes in about 15 races a year.

Race Car Driving School

He started the Cory Kruseman Sprint Car Driving School in Ventura, California, in 1999.

Cory Kruseman battles racers in sprint car race.

“About 400 to 600 people attend the school a year. We've trained everybody from a 14 year old girl, who doesn’t have a driver’s license to the late, great Paul Newman,” he said. “We instruct a lot of pro racers, celebrities, and average joes.”

People learn about the school through word of mouth.

“If you are in the business, you know who we are,” he said. “USA Today just listed us as one of the top 10 schools in the United States.”

There is no classroom work involved in the course. Instead, it is all hands on. The students drive sprint cars, which have one seat, and there is no communication between them and the instructors.

“They’re on their own,” Kruseman said.

The class includes an Arrive and Race Series.

“People lease cars from us. They go through the school and learn how to drive, then we take them to a nearby race track where they race,” he said.

“Those who participate in the program are responsible for the car they lease. They have to pay for any car they tear up. We offer insurance for the school, but not for racing,” Kruseman said.

“We don’t put anyone out in a race who we don’t think is safe and in control. Still, so far as racing experience, some have very little,” he said.

The school uses sprint and midget sprint cars. The sprint cars have a wheelbase of 86-inches and are 76-inches wide and include a 700-horsepower engine that is naturally aspirated. Their top speed was clocked at 98 mph at the Ventura Raceway. The midget sprint cars have a Ford Focus 2.0-liter engine that produces 190 horsepower, has a 72-inch wheelbase and is 65-inches wide. Their top speed has been clocked at 84 mph at the Ventura Raceway.

Kruseman uses K&N air, oil, and fuel filters in his personal racecar, the school’s cars, his daily driver, and his motorhome.

“We use them because hands down they’re the best product out there,” said Kruseman. “They are an advantage. Even if they cost more money, I would still be running them.”

K&N Air Filter Provides Exceptional Protection for Your 2016-2017 Cadillac CT6 2.0L Turbo

K&N's oiled cotton construction allows greater breathing while blocking dirt and dust

The K&N replacement filter helps your 2.0L turbo Cadillac breathe better

There are few who would argue that the 2016 Cadillac CT6 was a major step forward in the revitalization of the Cadillac product line but also in American luxury cars in general. At the CT6’s launch, Cadillac attributed its new-found status to “creating a new formula for the prestige sedan through the integration of new technologies developed to achieve dynamic performance, efficiency, and agility previously unseen in large luxury cars.”

A fact that the Cadillac folks like to emphasize is that the CT6 is one of the world’s lightest and most agile full-size luxury performance sedans, with dimensions near those of BMW’s short-wheelbase 7 Series, but the approximate weight, agility, and efficiency of the smaller Cadillac CTS.

To make good on that type of claim, Cadillac created the CT6 with one of the industry’s most advanced automotive body structures, an aluminum-intensive architecture that incorporates 11 unique materials to achieve the desired balance of strength, performance, and efficiency.

The structural integrity is put to good use through an advanced performance chassis system designed to deliver an engaging driving experience through the use of a lightweight, aluminum-intensive high-arm multilink short-long arm front suspension. At the rear is a five-link independent suspension that uses multiple outer ball joints and cross braces for optimal handling and steering precision. Added features include Active Rear Steer, Magnetic Ride Control, and selectable drive modes.

There are three engines offered in the CT6: an all-new 400 horsepower Cadillac 3.0L V6 Twin Turbo engine offers 404 horsepower, a 3.6L single turbo V6 that develops 335 horsepower, and a 2.0L single turbo inline four cylinder that produces 265 horsepower.

K&N replacement filters are true drop-in products with performance gains

Included in the box are complete illustrated instructions that makes installation a breeze

If you opted to purchase the 2.0L four cylinder turbo version of the CT6, you know that your Cadillac features rear wheel drive only (AWD is only available with the turbo V6 engines). If you don’t live in the snow belt, it’s not such a bad decision, as the four cylinder model weighs nearly 500 lbs. less than the twin-turbo 3.0L. If the 2.0L four weighed the same as the twin-turbo 3.0L, it would be giving up over a half-second in the quarter mile.

K&N air filters are manufactured from numerous layers of oiled cotton filter media, rather than air flow-limiting and easily-clogged paper used in many OEM and replacement filters. The oiled cotton construction not only allows for exceptional air flow but also provides excellent filtration properties to ensure your Cadillac’s long engine life. This is well-proven by K&N’s sophisticated in-house ISO 5011 filtration efficiency testing laboratory, which adheres to strict International Standard Organization protocols, ensuring that K&N replacement air filters provide a high degree of airflow without sacrificing engine protection.

The only maintenance required for a K&N replacement filter is a service easily completed on your own. At intervals of up to 50,000 miles (depending on your driving conditions) utilize the K&N 99-5000 air filter cleaning kit to clean and re-oil your air filter, bringing it back to brand-new condition and ready for another 50,000 miles of driving. Your one K&N air filter is designed to last for the lifetime of your vehicle, which K&N guarantees will perform for up to 10 years or 1,000,000 miles without requiring replacement.

The K&N 33-5052 fits the following vehicles:

2017 CADILLAC CT6 2.0L L4 Fuel Injection - All Models
