Matt Waldin of West Chester, Pennsylvania has been crowned the Champion of the 2009 Drift Mania Canada Championship (DMCC) after sweeping the series with a podium finish at every round. Matt and his Tuner Icons Nissan 350Z finished the season with two first, two second, and one third place finishes.

On the track, Matt is known for his aggressive, foot-to-the floor driving style. “You have to charge hard,” he advises. “You don't win battles from being the lead car; you win them by being inches off the lead car’s door at eighty miles per hour.”

Parallel to K&N drifters Chris Forsberg and Vaughn Gittin Jr., Matt also began his career at Englishtown Raceway in New Jersey, practicing and competing at grassroot events. He worked his way up the ranks and now holds every North American professional drifting license.

“The key to our successful DMCC season was the reliability of the car,” says Matt. “If the car doesn't perform, we can't drive it to the limits. Being consistent on the track starts with a reliable setup.”

Part of Matt’s reliable setup includes K&N Filters. “Using K&N Filters in the Tuner Icons 350Z is the obvious choice,” he says. “The reliability and consistency of the car starts with the right filter.”

Matt intends to use his winning momentum to compete at Formula Drift Round 7 at Irwindale Speedway. “I plan to use all of the knowledge that I have gained running on banked ovals during the DMCC season,” he says. “At Irwindale, I will be satisfied with making the top sixteen, but the champagne doesn't pop unless you’re on the podium, so you can be sure we will be charging hard for this one.”

Monster Truck Power at Geauga Fair in Ohio and Northwest Missouri State Fair

Seven of the best Monster Trucks in the Northeast gathered for a night full of high octane motorsports thrills at the Geauga Fair in Burton, Ohio, before travelling to Bethany, Missouri for the Northwest Missouri State Fair.

During the wheelie contest the drivers pulled their Monster Trucks high above the car stacks. “I did a textbook wheelie across the first line of cars,” said Vaters. “When I went for my second wheelie I floored the gas in the Stallion and broke the throttle cable. I was out of commission for a while.”

Vaters couldn’t make the racing portion of the event, but Trey Myers drove the Iron Warrior. In the first race, Myers bested Dan Patrick in Sampson by a truck length. Myers also beat Jay Snyder in Screamin’ Demon in the semi-finals, and went on to beat Jim Koehler in Avenger in the finals.

Vaters and his crew completed repairs and made it back out in time for his favorite event, the Monster Freestyle. “I was on a mission to make up lost time in the pits,” said Vaters. “I soared off the cars and van stacks in Black Stallion.”

The next day, Vaters and his team traveled to the Northwest Missouri State Fair in Bethany, Missouri. ‘It was the first time a Monster Truck show performed at this fair so everyone was in for a treat,” said Vaters. “The fans came out in droves and set a record attendance.”

During the first event, the crowd was treated to the sky wheelie competition. “I was able to get the nose of the all Ford Powered K&N Black Stallion up in the air,” said Vaters. “It seemed to be suspended in slow motion and I took the win. I also tore the tailgate off the truck on the line of cars.”

Iron Warrior and Black Stallion next went head-to-head in racing and made it to the finals. “Both trucks came off the line simultaneously when the flag dropped,” said Vaters. “Each truck throttled in the straight-away across the car stacks. We both executed well.” Black Stallion eventually took the win in a very close competition.

Vaters uses K&N air and oil filters on his Monster Trucks. “K&N filters work,” said Vaters. “We push our engines to the limit and are hard on our motors. K&N gives us the protection we need to win competition after competition.”

The Black Stallion Team will next be at Raceway Park in Englishtown, New Jersey on September 19.

Sports Club Car of America Event Race Challenge at Buttonwillow Speedway in California

Carlsbad, California teenager Jacob Pearlman is transitioning from karts to race cars. Pearlman capped off the first week of his senior year in high school by running the double race regional Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) event at Buttonwillow Raceway in Buttonwillow, California.

“Jason has a heavy academic work load,” said Richard Pearlman, Jacob’s father. “Because of that, he had to pass on the Friday test and tuning day at the track.”

Pearlman faced a lot of challenges and had to find speed on race day in the car. “I only drove this track in the clockwise direction once, prior to this race,” said Pearlman.

On Saturday, Pearlman had only 10 laps of warm up and 10 laps of qualifying to look forward to before the 14 lap main. Unfortunately, after only three laps, his Mazda RX had problems. By the time the crew repaired the car, both the practice and qualifying sessions were over. Pearlman had to start in the back of the field for the main event. Pearlman was able to pick up several spots early in the race, but eventually finished in the middle of the pack in 5th place.

Sunday’s race day was completely different. Pearlman was able to use his limited Saturday track time to his advantage. He qualified in the middle of the pack and soon moved up to the front of the Pro-7 field.

Pearlman and fellow K&N supported racer Ken Tucker ran door-to-door and bumper-to-bumper as they sought an advantage in pursuit of the podium. After 10 laps of action, Pearlman’s pace slowed because of more problems with his race car and eventually finished in 5th place.

Even though he did not win, Pearlman climbed out of his car with a smile and said, “This is the most fun I’ve ever had racing. I can’t believe how wild and close racing can be in a car.”

The Pearlman’s use K&N filters in every one of their vehicles. “From go-karts to race cars to our tow vehicles and personal automobiles, we rely on K&N quality and value,” said Richard Pearlman. “Jacob never pulls onto a racetrack without K&N under the hood of his car.”

Pearlman will return to SCCA Pro-7 racing and the Buttonwillow Raceway in October for the SCCA CalClub final event of the year.

The two-time world champion scored 11 points from his five heats at the Matije Gubca Stadium, but the points leader was eliminated at the semi-final stage after finishing in third place.

“I should have done better and at least got through to the final,” said Crump. “I rode well in the heats but my semi-final let me down and now I have a lot of work ahead of me at the next two rounds to maintain my lead and win the championship.”

After nine rounds the top ten riders in the 2009 World Championship Standings are:

Jason Crump, Australia, 146 points
Emil Sayfutdinov, Russia, 120 points
Tomasz Gollob, Poland, 110 points
Greg Hancock, USA, 106 points
Andreas Jonsson, Sweden 92 points
Kenneth Bjerre, Denmark, 85 points
Fredrik Lindgren, Sweden 82 points
Nicki Pedersen, Denmark 80 points
Rune Holta, Poland 77 points
Hans Andersen, Denmark 70 points

“If I finish in front of Sayfutdinov at the next round I will be the World Champion,” said Crump. “But, if he outscores me by more than two points, then the championship will be decided in the last round at Bydgoszcz in Poland. Naturally I will be giving it everything I have at the next round and going for the win. I will also be racing with K&N products. In my sport filtration is the most important thing for reliability. Reliability wins me races and World Championships and that is why I rely on K&N motorcycle filters. I race on the dirt and keeping the dirt out of the engine is critical. At the same time K&N lets my engines breathe for maximum performance on the track every time.”

Round ten of the 2009 Speedway Grand Prix World Championship will take place at Olympia Stadium in Terenzano, Italy on Saturday September 26.
