The 21-year-old paraplegic race car driver from Murrieta, California won Round 9 and had a second place finish in Round 10 in the Super Lite Class. “It was gratifying to get the win,” said Casey Coughlin, co-owner of SoCal Super Trucks. “We had an insane few days.  On the Tuesday before the race we noticed some problems and had the motor torn down for better evaluation. The motor had to come out, get repaired and we had it back in the truck by Wednesday night at about 2:30 in the morning. Then we started our journey from California to Arizona.”

James rolled his vehicle on Friday during qualifying but still had the 2nd fastest time. He started the race in 7th position due to an inverted start rule. “We noticed more problems," said Coughlin. "Speed Technologies loaned us an engine and we got everything under control just before the Super Lite start on Saturday.”

James picked his way through the field one by one and took the victory by a 25 truck length margin. “I’m so proud of my crew,” said James. “Everyone worked so hard to get the SoCal SuperTrucks Super Lite ready for Saturday’s race and I was happy to reward them with a victory.”

Sunday’s race looked as if it would be a repeat win for James. However, a blown engine with 3 laps remaining caused him to lose power. Chad Leising passed James to claim first and James settled on 2nd place.

“I think Ricky’s perseverance motto rang true for all of us on this race weekend,” said Coughlin. “We were sure we would not be racing Saturday morning, but we ended up with a victory. That is nothing short of amazing. We could not have done it without the support and help of John Harrah and the crew at Speed Technologies.”

SoCal Super Trucks currently has its Superlite torn down and are prepping it now. They want to figure out what went wrong in Arizona. “We're getting ready for the next LOORRS race in Primm, Nevada in November,” said Coughlin. “Then we’ll be at the Lucas Oil Challenge Cup in December in Lake Elsinore, California.”

Lake Elsinore is good to James. He won rounds 7 and 8 of the LOORRS Series by dominating the competition in July. “We can always count on our K&N filters,” said Coughlin. “Without the help and support of K&N we would not be sitting on the podium. K&N gives us excellent filtration and protects our engines.”

James other accomplishments include:

2008 West Coast Pro Truck Champion
2008 West Coast Pro Truck Rookie of the Year
2008 Ironman World Champion
2008 X Games Adaptive Motocross Silver medalist
2008 Challenge Athlete of the year
2007 Baja 500 finisher

James was paralyzed from the sternum down at an amateur motocross race as a teenager. He refused to give up. He drives his truck by steering with his right hand, as his left hand works the clutch, throttle, shifter and brakes. “Ricky is a force to be reckoned with on the track,” said Coughlin. “He’s also an inspiration to us all.”

Hard Core Performance in Women's Race for the Cure by K&N Filters Trophy Truck

“Everyone was wearing pink, the guys and the girls,” said Jenna Jefferies. “Naturally, the trophy truck had to go pink for the day.”

The Race for the Cure is hard core and one of the largest female dominated races in the country. The goal is to drive as fast as possible and as many laps as possible in three hours. Each lap is 27 miles worth of harsh bumps, rocks and blinding dust and dirt.

The No. 22 K&N Trophy Truck is equipped with a K&N designed air induction system and a K&N performance oil filter to provide Team Jefferies with the power and protection it needs for racing under extreme conditions. “Our K&N filter is amazing,” said Jefferies. “It stops 100 percent of the dirt and silt from damaging the engine. It’s hard to see past the dust sometimes but our K&N filters manage to filter out the dust and debris while making horsepower. K&N filters continue to attest that they can withstand any environment.”

“We hit a rock and had a flat tire on the third lap, said Jefferies. “We’re not allowed to get out of the truck unless we break down completely. Fortunately we made it to the pit area and the K&N Jefferies Racing Crew was ready to change it.”

The Jefferies women were back in the thick of things right away, absorbing body jarring terrain and eventually crossing the finish line 9th out of 20 race cars in the Unlimited Class.

“It was fun and for a very good cause,” said Jefferies. “We could not have done it without the support of K&N, Damen and Casey Jefferies and all of our family and friends. We were there last year and the event raised more than $160,000. The bottom line is we are raising money and awareness for women who have breast cancer and a great hospital. We plan to be back again next year.”

The next race for the No.22 K&N Trophy Truck will be the Baja 1000 from November 19 -22.

A Year of Learning and Sharing for Uli Perez and Team K1 Speed of Super Truck Series

In 2003 Uli Perez started racing Legend Cars part-time. He is currently tearing it up in the Super Truck Inc. Series.
In 2003 Uli Perez started racing Legend Cars part-time. He is currently tearing it up in the Super Truck Inc. Series.
Back in 1996, Uli Perez was working for 76 Racing Fuel. Perez traveled to all of the west coast NASCAR races distributing fuel (Winston Cup, Busch Series, Craftsman Series, South West Touring and Featherlite). Race fuel, you might say, sparked his career as a racecar driver. In '03 Perez started racing Legend Cars part-time - currently, he's tearing it up in the Super Truck Inc. Series.
Uli Perez has invested effort in getting the Latino community more involved with NASCAR racing.
Uli Perez has invested effort in getting the Latino community more involved with NASCAR racing.

Over the course of his 14-year race career Perez has accumulated many unforgettable moments. "I have so many memories spanning back to 1996. But I have to say my most satisfying and memorable moment would be after taking a few years off from racing, and then returning to my first race in the Super Truck Series at Irwindale and qualifying - I took home the Hard Charger Award that night," recalls Perez proudly.

"I would also have to say, that besides winning a Hard Charger Award, my other key highlights have been getting involved with NASCAR's Hispanic marketing on the west coast," continues Perez. "I have had some great experiences and getting involved with the Hispanic community through the Super Truck Series has been an experience of it own."

Asked how he would like to be viewed by the Latino racing community, Perez had this to say. "I want to be viewed and respected not only as a great driver, but as a person who has invested time and effort into getting the Latino community more involved with NASCAR racing, on and off the track. We don't have that many Hispanics involved in racing and we haven't always had the opportunities to get them involved because of a general lack of awareness in the sport. So, I hope I can be seen as someone who helped to set a foundation in our community."

Reflecting on his pursuit to race in the NASCAR Camping World Truck series Perez says candidly, "I don't see myself ready to jump into the Camping World Truck series anytime soon. I feel I still have so much to learn with every race, and every day. I want to spend a few more years in the Super Truck Series and get as much knowledge and experience as possible so that I'm thoroughly ready and prepared to take on that challenge when it comes."

"We are currently using K&N air filters, breather filters and oil filters on my number 16, K1 Speed Super Truck Inc. truck. We use K&N air filters on all the Super Truck Inc. trucks that run in the series. They've always been the first choice for all my vehicles."

"My basic goals remain the same, I plan to race a few years in the Super Truck Series and then get involved with Camping Worlds west Series when I'm ready and the timing is right. Along the way I want to gather as much experience and racing knowledge as possible, running in different series, and I want to continue to build on the respect coming from the racing community," concludes Perez.

Triple Crown of Formula Drift Belongs to Chris Forsberg and his Nissan 350Z

Chris Forsberg has won the Triple Crown of drifting. He clinched the series title at the House of Drift, also known as Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, California.

“We had to qualify for a spot in the top 32,” said the 27-year-old from Huntington Beach, California. “I tried not to let the points lead get to me mentally. I did not want to mess myself up. I focused on qualifying and made sure our speed was high enough. We qualified 7th and that was a huge weight off my shoulders.”

Drivers started in the half-mile of the Turn 2 corner and raced down the back straight into Turns 3 and Turns 4. They transitioned into the tracks third mile oval and veered into a 90 degree turn before ending at the starting point. This all took place in front of a crowd of nearly 12,000 fans.

Forsberg only needed to win one round of the tandem competition to take the win in the NOS Energy/ Maxxis Tire Nissan 350Z. He defeated Van Den Brink and clinched the series title. When it was over, his crew pulled him out of the car and tossed him into the air. “It was great,” he said. “We’d gotten so close in the past few years and we pushed hard for it every year. It feels great.”

Forsberg is one of the original drivers in the six-year-old Formula D series. He also claimed the most wins in the 2009 season from the season opener in April at the Long Beach Grand Prix to Road Atlanta.

“We’ve been chasing the championship for the past 6 years since Formula DRIFT first started and everyone was out to do the same thing,” he said. “We just ran as hard as everyone else and did the best we could. I’m totally psyched for what my team was able to accomplish to win the championship.”

Formula Drift was established on the streets of Japan and evolved into a worldwide competitive sport that challenges each driver’s ability and vehicle control. “It’s not about racing,” said Forsberg. “It’s an extreme sport where you are judged on how well you do on the track and on your driving ability.”

Forsberg plans to compete in Formula Drift in 2010. His Nissan 350Z will have an upgraded drive and engine package. “One thing that will remain the same is our K&N air filters,” he said. “K&N is critical to our engine package because it’s the only barrier between the dirt, rocks, burned rubber and debris from the track. K&N keeps us running clean and is reliable enough to push us to the championship.”

Forsberg’s next event will be at the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) Show in Las Vegas, Nevada during the first week of November. He will be signing autographs and talking to fans.
