East Bay Raceway in Gibsonton, Florida entered its 36th year of operation in 2012. It's an unassuming one-third mile oval made of fine Florida clay. Some have called it a "magical track" which might just be true, as it's held a spell over Brasstown, North Carolina's Ray Cook for more than a decade. Last weekend the hex was broken when
Cook and the D&R Motorsports team reached victory lane for the first time in 12 years at the East Bay Raceway, in the third round of the "Winternationals."

Cook finished fourth fastest in his group during Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series qualifying and later won his heat race. The "Tarheel Tiger" started fourth on the grid and led the 35-lapper on two different occasions, securing the lead for the final time on lap 31 and held on to earn the $7,000 top prize. With this win Cook now has two trips to victory lane in 2012 already.
Cook and the D&R Motorsports team have now returned back home following their successful stint in Georgia and Florida during "Speedweeks 2012." Overall the no.53 team entered eight high-profile Dirt Late Model events from February 10-18 at three different southern venues: Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, Georgia, Golden Isles Speedway in Brunswick, Georgia, and the East Bay Raceway event. Cook was fast at all three facilities, as he accumulated one victory, two runner-up finishes, and two additional top-ten performances.

Cook's runner-up efforts came early during the "Speedweeks" and with the benefit of hindsight they appear to be only a warm-up. In Georgia Cook finished second in the $20,000 to win "Winter Freeze" at Screven, while he also secured a close second only a day later in the $10,000 to win 'Super Bowl of Racing' at Golden Isles.
At the conclusion of the six-race Winternationals at East Bay, Cook was credited with a fifth place finish in the final DART Winternationals point standings. The popular driver known as the "Tarheel Tiger" currently finds himself tied for fourteenth in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series point standings, which were comprised only of the final two nights at East Bay.
"I am ecstatic on how we performed throughout Speedweeks and I can't thank my team and everyone associated with it for all of their support and dedication," remarked K&N sponsored driver upon arriving back home in North Carolina. "My hat is off to the whole MasterSbilt gang. They built me and (Don) O'Neal new cars this off-season and they were extremely fast right out of the box. We had a couple of close runner-up finishes in Georgia that got our trip off to a great start and then the win at East Bay really capped it off. Historically, I have not been very good at that place, but to win there for the first time in 12 years was special and it really gives me some confidence heading into the rest of the season!"
The next event for Cook and the D&R Motorsports team is the 15th Annual 'Bama Bash' on March 2-3 at the Green Valley Speedway in Glencoe, Alabama. The unsanctioned, two-day program will be headlined by a $15,015 to win, 75-lap main event on Saturday night, March 3. Cook won the event in 2009 and 2010 and finished a solid ninth last year despite getting caught up in a wreck early in the race.
The Kia Sportage isn't pure SUV nor is it all sport, it fits a niche between driving to work and touring the Rockies during winter. Thanks to its fun-to-drive temperament, the 2012 Kia Sportage is a realistic alternative to other small crossover SUVs on the market. Yet, this year it has earned a decided edge in that particular category. The 2012 Kia Sportage garnered the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's top safety rating, making Kia's compact SUV the latest vehicle to earn an overall five stars out of five in NHTSA's crash tests.

The NHTSA recently adopted more stringent guidelines and rigorous testing practices, making the Sportage's accomplishment that much more impressive. In fact, for the entire 2012 model year, only 11 total vehicles were awarded NHTSA's highest combined star rating.
The Kia delivers intelligent styling inside and out, and we can't forget the aforementioned fun factor which makes it more enjoyable to drive than many other crossovers. It offers a powerful and efficient turbo engine option in SX trim, and lots of premium features with intuitive controls. An additional crossover advantage for both the 2011 and 2012 Kia Sportage with 2.0 liter engine is enhanced performance benefits, gained by merely swapping the OEM air filter with K&N's 33-2469 reusable replacement air filter.
K&N's 33-2469 reusable replacement air filter fits into the existing air box just like the stock factory filter, no modifications of any kind are required.
K&N replacement air filters have low restriction and less restriction can result in power and torque all while the filter provides outstanding air filtration.
The K&N 33-2469 can be used for up to 50,000 miles before servicing is needed depending on driving conditions. It comes with a million mile limited warranty. That's how much faith K&N puts into their product. Hello fun and performance, adios dirty, coughing engine.

Replacement Air Filter for 2012 to 2016 Can-Am Renegade
Bombardier Recreational Product Inc. (BRP) is headquartered in Valcourt, Quebec, which happens to be the birthplace of Joseph-Armand Bombardier, the inventor and entrepreneur who gave us Ski-Doo and Sea-Doo. Not content with merely ruling oceans and lakes worldwide, the company now has successfully laid claim to off-road domination. With branches around the globe, the transportation company is already a leader in rail technology and the third-largest manufacturer of civilian aircraft in the world as well.

In 2011 BRP experienced unprecedented racing success, winning two Pro-class championships, two manufacturer's cup titles, several amateur-class titles and a successful debut with the Commander side-by-side racing efforts. Building on that momentum the privately held company jump-started January 2012 by having three of their vehicles, the Outlander 1000 XT, the Renegade 1000 and Commander 800R, named "Best in Class" by several leading off-road publications. The following month the Can-Am ATV and side-by-side teams reached their respective class podiums in the 34th edition of the most famous rally in the world, the Dakar Rally. Argentinean ATV racer Daniel Mazzucco took home the 4x4 Quad Class win aboard his Can-Am Renegade.
It's anyone's guess what Can-Am will accomplish with the remaining ten months, but one thing is certain, survival in the brutal off-road environment looks a lot friendlier with a simple K&N CM-8012 high-performance air filter upgrade. Replacement is totally straightforward because the CM-8012 is designed as a direct replacement for the stock air filter. That means nothing needs to be cut, bent, or otherwise adjusted.
K&N is the gold standard in replacement air filters for a couple of race proven reasons, they provide high air flow for added power and performance while providing outstanding filtration, ensuring the wheels on your Can-Am continue to go round and round. This simple one-time filter swap will give 2012 to 2016 Renegade and Outlanders a little extra boost in their gety-up.
This K&N performance air filter is washable and resuable so forget buying disposable air filters over and over just to throw them away.
When you spend the majority of your life doing something you love, it becomes a part of you. This is all too familiar for vehicle specialist, Mike Ryan; who started out his career at a young age with his passion for driving anything with an engine and wheels. Then the day came, at the age of 18, when he had the opportunity to stunt drive. Before you know it he made a career out of it.
SEMA featured Freightliner race truck
His specialty is big trucks. Some People may have seen some of his stunts in such movies as; Fast Five or maybe even Training Day. There is no lack of wreckage in these great action packed films. One of the most memorable chase scenes, for me, involves two hopped up Dodge Chargers, a massive safe, and some excellent stunt driving. I am referring to the scene where the Fast and Furious team robs a bank in an attempt to drag the vault filled with money through the city to a safe place. In reality, during part of this scene the safe was actually towed with a big rig truck. Mike Ryan drove the truck while camera magic is used to cut out the big rig. This scene may by absurd but, will most certainly be remembered.
Mike not only coordinates stunts, he also dedicates much of his time to his Freightliner race truck. When asked to describe the modifications done to the vehicle; he said it, "Is completely hand build from the ground up like a sprint car is." Aluminum frames rails were used to offer strength and keep the overall weight at a minimum. Most of the truck was put together at the Freightliner facility in Portland while the compound turbo engine was manufactured in Detroit. Mike claims, "The engine is just shy of 2000 horsepower." A truck this size definitely requires loads of horsepower.
Mike Ryan's Freightliner race truck at the 2011 SEMA Show
One might be curious as to what the truck is used for. Why simply put, racing! The blue and orange gulf painted Freightliner has participated in a variety of races from hills climbs to land speed trials. Mike has taken this truck up to the top of Pike's Peak and even reached a max speed of 225.675 miles per hour at Bonneville.
This upcoming year will be busy as ever for Mike's big rig race truck with events like Mid America Truck Show, Formula Drift, their 14th Pikes Peak, another year of SEMA and many more. At these events spectators will be able experience this amazing machine.
One item in particular that one may see is the massive K&N air filter fastened to the motor right behind the cab of the truck. All of the air required to feed the powerful engine is filtered through the K&N high flow material. I asked Mike what he thought about K&N air filters and he claimed, "It's a tremendous product; there is no arguing that. I have not had a valve cover off in 5 years." This just proves that the K&N air filter offers excellent protection for the most extreme applications.
