The RU-5171HBK Universal Air Filter Side View
The RU-5171HBK Universal Air Filter with black Drylow synthetic media.

K&N makes thousands of performance air filters for factory vehicles. They also make performance universal air filters for a wide variety of applications. Select a filter for your need based on size and fitment and it will provide excellent airflow and filtration efficiency. These clamp-on filters are made using durable and flexible urethane flanges, with a multitude of lengths, diameters, flange sizes, angles and offsets available.

K&N has added a line of universal air filters with black colored filter media made with their Dryflow non-woven synthetic material. These filters unlike traditional oiled cotton filters do not require oil. The black Dryflow filter media is supported by wire mesh on both sides to help provide durability and strength. Cleaning the filter is extremely easy using K&N’s synthetic filter cleaner and cleaning only needs to be performed when the wire mesh starts to disappear under the dirt.

Some popular K&N black universal air filters are:

K&N Replacement Air Filter for 2013-2016 Ford Fusion, C-Max and Lincoln MKZ
K&N Replacement Air Filter for 201-2016 Ford Fusion, C-Max and Lincoln MKZ

Shaken, not stirred - a line so eternally tied to the refinement, excitement, and entertainment of James Bond that anyone else reciting it just doesn’t do it justice. Bond’s iconic car, the Aston Martin, lent some of its styling cues to the new Ford Fusion and like its brethren, the Lincoln MKZ, refinement, excitement and entertainment abound. The 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 Fusion and MKZ are packed with the most modern technology in the cabin and under the hood. With options like adaptive cruise control, automated parallel parking, collision warning systems, and a 2.0 liter hybrid engine that delivers an EPA-estimated 45 miles per gallon, even the Q branch of MI6 would be impressed. There’s one ingredient yet to be included though, the olive that without, the vodka martini would be incomplete. That ingredient is the K&N 33-5001 air filter.

K&N Replacement Air Filter for 2013-2016 Ford Fusion, Lincoln MKZ and 2013-2015 Ford C-Max

K&N has been around almost as long as the James Bond franchise, and the 33-5001 air filter is a prime example of K&N’s 40+ years of expertise in designing and producing reusable air filters. The filter is designed to increase horsepower and acceleration, and uses a durable urethane sealing lip to ensure a positive seal in the factory air box. K&N’s famous oiled cotton gauze filter media pulls double duty, helping to increase airflow as well as providing excellent filtration efficiency and engine protection. As the 33-5001 filter is made of cotton, it’s washable and reusable so it never needs to be replaced. The multiple layers of oiled cotton give the filter depth-loading characteristics, meaning it can go for up to 50,000 miles between cleanings, depending on driving conditions. The 33-5001 air filter is as reliable as Bond’s ability to get the girl, and K&N backs the filter with their industry-leading Million Mile Limited Warranty.

USAC Sprint Car Racer Jarett Andretti Shows Family Bloodlines Run Deep

Sprint car driver Jarett Adretti zooms by at the USAC race

With a Great Uncle named Mario, a Grandfather named Aldo and a father named John, it’s no wonder Jarett Andretti is a winner both on and off the track. To sum up what kind of young man he is becoming, just read what a classmate from North Carolina State University has to say about him.

Jarett Andretti takes a sharp turn during USAC Sprint Car Racing

Jarett Andretti takes a sharp turn during USAC Sprint Car Racing

“Jarett is my hardest working friend balancing a full class load at college as well as pursuing a career in racing. He manages his time efficiently and even hangs out with his friends when he has time. Jarett knows what he wants to do with his life and has goals set for himself so that he can be successful. He is a responsible, reliable young man who I would call for help in any situation. Jarett is also a great role model for his younger sisters and is a family oriented gentlemen. I have a great amount of respect for him and the direction he is traveling in life.” - Devon Demaine

As will most drivers, Jarett started off in Go-Karts and then moved to USAC Midgets and stayed in the USAC ranks since 2011. In addition, he ran about 10 races at Oswego Speedway in their Supermodified division, the 24 Hours of Daytona and also competed in some open-wheel formula car racing. Jarett says he likes to race as many different cars as possible.

”My father ran Sprint and Silver Crown cars when he was coming through the ranks” stated Jarett, “and he thought it was valuable experience for him so, in 2012, when we were deciding the next step we both thought sprint cars would be the best route to go. There are plenty of races, stiff competition and you get the opportunity to run on both dirt and pavement. All of these factors combined led me to the sprint car ranks where I will be racing about 80 times this year across 14 states.”

Some of his most memorable highlights of his racing career include getting to race in the USAC Silver Crown division last year, and getting to go to some very neat tracks like Pikes Peak and Gateway, and running at some historical tracks like the Springfield Mile and Eldora. “Racing at Oswego Speedway was also a great experience,” added Jarett, “since my Grandfather and my Great Uncle had both raced there.”

When the Andretti Short Track team started building their sprint car program in 2012, they looked at companies that provided parts for each aspect of the race car. “K&N obviously builds great air and oil filters,” stated Jarett, “so we got the opportunity to meet Ryan at the IMIS show and we started building our relationship and are very proud to be using K&N products week in and week out on our Sprint and Silver Crown Cars.”

“In the 2+ years that we have been using K&N Air and Oil filters” concluded Jarett, “we have never, ever had a reliability issue. They always perform at their peak and are never a reliability concern, so, for that reason I would recommend K&N filters to anybody in racing or for use on their personal vehicle.”

Rain or shine, Cole Custer delivers on the NASCAR K&N Pro Series

He won the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race at Richmond International Raceway, his third in 16 starts.

He had to wait a day to win the Blue Ox 100. The race was scheduled for Friday night, but a three-hour rain delay postponed the start until Saturday morning.

Custer passed pole winner Nick Drake on lap 49 and led the remaining 52 laps. It was the only lead change in the race.

“We followed Nick in the early part, but part of it was I spun the tires on the first couple of restarts,” said Custer. “I finally figured it out and we got him on the restart.”

Custer started the race on the front row with Drake. There were five caution periods for 32 laps. A multicar crash on lap 41 set up the restart when Custer took the lead from Drake.

“I think we did get around lappers pretty good today,” Custer said. “I think we just caught them in the right spot. I was able to get off turn 2 pretty good.”

Custer opened the season by winning the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race at Phoenix International Raceway. He made his second K&N Pro Series East of 2014 start at Richmond.

The 16-year old from Ladera Ranch, California, also won K&N Pro Series races at Iowa Speedway and New Hampshire International Speedway last year.

Ben Rhodes finished in second place at Richmond International Raceway, his fourth top-five finish in five races.

“I was trying to catch (Custer) though,” Rhodes said. “He had a really fast car. It was a really good day for us. I’m really happy with our finish.”

Rhodes leads the K&N Pro Series East standings by 18 points over Gray Gaulding. Gaulding was 11th at Richmond.

Drake crossed the finish line in third place, his second top-five finish of the season. It was his fifth career K&N Pro Series East start.

“At the end there, there was no grip. The track was pretty green,” Drake said. “You just couldn’t run those guys down at the end. We were OK if we were in the lead. I feel like just whoever was leading was going to stay our front due to the fact that there was no grip on the track. I’ll take a third.”

Austin Hill was fourth followed by Ronnie Bassett Jr. in fifth.

The next NASCAR K&N Pro Series race is the Casey’s General Stores 150 at Iowa Speedway on May 17.

Martino Motorsports Unveils New K&N Rear-Engine Dragster at NHRA Spring Spectacle of Speed

At the end of last season the Martino Motorsports dragster only existed in an artist’s illustration

At the end of last season the Martino Motorsports dragster only existed in an artist’s illustration

Ryan Martino, son of founder Tom Martino of the family-operated Martino Motorsports, has had an exceptionally jam-packed and eventful off-season. Amid a brutal winter of relentless sub-zero temperatures and record amounts of snowfall blanketing their Youngstown, Ohio, home, the Martinos have been busy readying their brand new K&N Filters rear-engine dragster for debut at the NHRA Spring Spectacle of Speed at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, Indiana, April 25-27. Between maintaining a full schedule of personal appearances, the national drag racing standouts recently took time out to give us a firsthand look at their new ride, and to give us some insights into their hectic pace.

The Martino’s rear-engine dragster utilizes a K&N second-generation composite dragster scoop and a K&N air and oil filter

Ryan: NHRA Top Dragster in Division 3 is probably the most competitive category NHRA offers. We constantly see record low bump spots at almost every event throughout the year and each season we see the bump spot lower at least a tenth in our class. Heading into 2014 we knew we had to step up our engine program to help maintain our competitive edge over the competition.

Tom: Last September, we purchased a complete 665 cubic inch Ny-Trex nitrous injected engine combination which we were luckily able to break in before the end of the year in October. After a few passes in our 240” dragster, it was obvious we needed a longer car designed to handle the high-horsepower/high-torque output of the new motor. We were right on the edge with our 240” dragster and could have probably gotten the combination to work, but we didn’t want to invest half of our 2014 season experimenting with how to tame the car down from track-to-track.

The new car is a 260” Mac Sherrill rear-engine dragster

Ryan: It was an easy choice for us to decide on who we wanted to build this new car. We’ve had a great working relationship with Mac Sherrill Race Cars in Sheffield Lake, Ohio over the years and have had great success in Super Comp and Top Dragster competition since we purchased our first Mac Sherrill dragster in 2005.

Tom: Mac truly outdid himself on this project. The new car is flat-out set up to go fast and is equipped to handle anything we can throw at it. The new car is a 260” Mac Sherrill Rear-Engine Dragster which features a fully-custom R&R Auto Body paint design.

Ryan: What’s fascinating with this new car is that it’s nearly an all Ohio equipped vehicle. Ohio is definitely a hidden treasure in the automotive industry and we are lucky to have some of the industries’ best right in our back yard. We have a full schedule planned in 2014. Our main focus will be to make a strong run for the NHRA Division 3 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series title. We also plan to compete in Top Dragster at select IHRA and PDRA events when our schedule allows, along with Quick 8 events at Quaker City Motorsports Park and Thompson Raceway Park.

Tom: We are also very fortunate to have a strong list of associates returning to our program in 2014. Anchoring the list of associates returning to Martino Motorsports in 2014 is K&N Filters. It’s truly been an honor and privilege to represent K&N Filters over the years. We have been long time fans of the K&N product lines in both our race cars and personal vehicles. Our new NHRA Top Dragster will utilize the K&N second-generation composite dragster scoop with K&N air filter (part # 100-8512) and K&N oil filters (part # HP-3002). New to our program this season will be the addition of Victory1 Performance; R&R Auto Body; RePlayXD Cameras; and Applied Racing Components (ARC). These associates have been a major part of our success over the years. 2014 wouldn’t be possible without their strong support and dedication to our racing program.

Ryan: In between putting the new car together, we have also been actively involved with off-season personal appearances for associates of our race team and our community since November. We’ve met a lot of great fans from all over the world at these events, many of which we look forward to seeing at the track in 2014.
