Opel Astra Gets Performance Increase of 6 HP with K&N Typhoon Air Intake

The Opel Astra G is competitive in its class when it comes to steering, handling and holding its own on the road. It is 13' 6" long, 6'6" wide and weighs upwards of 1,079kg. K&N Engineering has released a new 69-Series Typhoon Air Intake (69-4900TS) for the 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 Opel Astra G 1.8L L4.

K&N dynamometer test show a 6 horsepower gain for this silver intake. "It is a straight forward design," said K&N Air Filter Product Manager Joost Adriaans. "We spent a lot of time making satisfying horsepower gains, by testing the air flow paths. A 6 horsepower gain is good considering this 1.8L engine only cranks out 103 horsepower at the wheels."

The design of this vehicle played a major role in the development of this 69-Series Kit. "There was not a whole lot of room in the engine bay," said Adriaans. "We designed this K&N Kit (69-4900TS) so the K&N Replacement Filter (RC-9350) is placed on top of the engine, where the original air box was. The Opel Astra also has a better throttle response with the K&N Typhoon Air Intake."

With all K&N 69-Series Typhoon Air Intakes there is a thorough development procedure which requires the use of multiple test vehicles. "The Opel Astra is one of the best selling cars in Europe," Adriaans said. "Finding donor vehicles was not a problem."

Harrison Brothers Racing Ends Dynapro Minitwins Championship in 3rd Place

The Dynapro Minitwins Championship ended at Brands Hatch in Europe and Jonathan Harrison of Harrison Brothers Racing finished the season in 3rd place.

Harrison had a front row spot during Race 1 and was part of the leading four. No one could make a move during the 8 lap race, and when it ended he was in 4th position.

During Race 2, Harrison bogged down from the front row and was swallowed up by the pack. At the end of the first lap he was 6th but moved through the field and slotted into 3rd on the last lap. Race 2 was better than Race 3 where Harrison languished in 9th place after a bad start. He pushed hard to break into the leading pack and moved to 5th.

In Race 4, Harrison landed in the front row of the pack for his last race of the year. He secured 3rd and no one could take that spot in the overall championship. It was a good end to the year for Harrison Brothers Racing.

Jonathan Harrison uses K&N Engineering products on a V Twin configuration 2003 Suzuki SV650S. “K&N Filters add power and allow Jonathan to reach the straights much quicker,” said Richie Harrison of Harrison Brothers Racing. “K&N helps us overall with the fast laps we need to win races and championships.”

Jonathan and Richie Harrison plan to move into the British Superbike Championship Series in 2007 and both brothers plan to compete on the national level.

World of Outlaws Points Leader's Breaks Out to Win

Donny Schatz picked up his 15th win (13th A-Feature, 2 preliminary) on September 15th during the World of Outlaws 1/3-Mile Nationals at Eagle Raceway. Schatz started the 15th spot in his ParkerStore No.15 J&J with Shaver power.

The current World of Outlaws leader worked his way into contention in the 40-lap feature event. Brooke Tatnell led the race from the start but two late cautions allowed Schatz to gain track position. This set up the final four lap shootout.

When the race resumed on lap 37, Schatz pulled even with Tatnell heading through turns one and two for the lead on the next lap. Schatz ran the low line and Tatnell tried to charge around the top, but Schatz crossed under the checkered flag first.

“That was as much fun as I have had all year,” said Schatz. “This feels awesome to be back in victory lane. What a great race, but I’m getting too old to be trying to come from the back like that. We needed this.”

Schatz entered the race just east of Lincoln, Nebraska to get some revenge. He said he felt like he let a victory get away from him in June during the Eagle Nationals.

“We should have won in June, but we had a little problem with our right rear tire,” said Schatz. “I feel like I’ve got the best crew out there. My guys worked hard to give me a racecar this good. Our K&N Engineering Carbon Fiber Airbox helps us achieve maximum horsepower at every race.”

The ParkerStore Team is headed to Jackson, Minnesota for the next big event.

World's Fastest Motorcycle Reaches 350.884 MPH at Bonneville Salt Flats

Chris Carr broke the world motorcycle land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats with his new BUB Enterprises Streamliner motorcycle. The five-time defending AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Champion re-wrote the record books at the International Motorcycle Speed Trials by BUB. Carr ran a two pass 350.8 mph average which included a monster 354 mph pass in the Denis Manning designed BUB streamliner.

His record became official on September 7 by representatives from sanctioning bodies at Bonneville Salt Flats’ FIM/AMA Sports. Earlier on Thursday, the ACK Attack team scrambled at the salts in an effort to top Carr. The drama unfolded after the ACK Attack was unable to complete their mission, hit the chutes early and pulled off the track.

Several million dollars went into the V-four turbo-charged three liter motor designed and built by Manning. It reaches nearly 500 horsepower and is in a chassis made of Kevlar and carbon fiber.

K&N Engineering supports the team with its Performance Gold High-Flow Oil Filter HP-3002. “I wanted to thank K&N for their long time support of the BUB Streamliner World Record attempt,” said Carr. “K&N’s high quality oil filters give us assurance that the motor will run smoothly and without restriction. At these speeds we cannot have engine failure.”
